Rob Parrella; October
18,2004.
Rob Parrella was the man who really put Bowls on the map in 1990's after
his outstanding win in the Commonwealth Games final which was televised to
the nation live. He is the only Australian player ever to win the gold medal
in the singles at the Commonwealth games.
Rob who was no ordinary player, captured the public and lawn bowlers in general
imaginations with the dynamic way he played the game, using every shot in
the book that can be played to win a game. He had an awesome drive, then
could draw the shot on a three penny bit. With his exciting style of playing,
gave lawn bowls exposure like never before.
Even people who don't follow lawn bowls were talking about the final of the
1990 commonwealth games singles final. Many were surprised at how skilful
one has to be to play at this level, and how much tension and excitement
there can be in a game of lawn bowls.
Looking briefly at his achievements there is no doubt that Rob Parrella is
and always will be a true legend of the game.

Steve Srhoy: November 12, 2004:
A great ambassador for the game of Lawn Bowls. Started at the bottom in 6th
grade and reached the pinnacle of the game by representing Australia. Known
by the nickname of "the Slammer", which came about by having such an awesome
drive, there was only one safe place to be when he drove, and that was to
get behind the club house. hard to believe anyone could put them down with
such power and accuracy. Steve, whilst a fiercely determined competitor,
has sportsmanship that is second to none. He has won and done all that can
be achieved in Lawn Bowls and still contributes to the game today in many
ways. An absolute gentleman who has also done much for the community. Let

Ron Taylor, June 28 2005:
Ron Taylor has been one of the great bowlers to play the game. He has had
an incredible career, there is hardly an event he hasn't won.
Perhaps the best memory of the many great moments he has enjoyed, was winning
the second Jack-hi series held in 1981.
The Jack-hi program was shown at 8.00PM on a wednesday evening and the ratings
were in the high 30's, which means a lot of people were watching.
Rons win no doubt promoted the game of bowls in W.A and it surged in popularity
after the series.
Hallmark of his game was a deadly accurate running shot and a brilliant draw
shot under pressure.
Always the gentleman, and a real sportsman, known for his friendliness and
a love of having a beer.
Ron is held in high esteem by all who know him and regarded as one of the
greats of our game.
Where and how did you start
I was a player in the local tennis club at Waroona, across the road from
the bowling club.
On some occasions we had to wait around for a game of tennis and I noticed
that the bowlers were having a beer while they were playing.
I asked the Lady President if the tennis players would be allowed to have
some beer in the fridge, she said no.
That was it, so it was off to the bowling club for me, and I have loved and
played the game ever since.

“WHO IS THE BEST PLAYER TO HAVE EVER PLAYED IN WESTERN
AUSTRALIA?”
When this age old discussion occurs many players are mentioned. They came
from different eras, played different games and all of them achieved plenty.
The one common denominator in all these discussions is the name GEOFF
OAKLEY.
Statistically, Geoff is one of Western Australia’s most decorated player
ever; having won the State singles an amazing five (5) times, the State fours
on four (4) occasions and is a triple Rosenthal medallist.
His other accomplishments are too many to mention in this article with the
exception of his 243 consecutive games for Western Australia and being an
Australian representative in 1978 & 1983.
Geoff’s knowledge of the game is second to none and he has been blessed with
the gift of being able to impart that knowledge to players of lesser ability
(which is nearly everybody).
Geoff has never been frightened by a challenge. He showed that by leaving
the strong Melville club to take over the role as player/coach of the unfashionable
North Beach club.
Within two years he took North Beach into the finals of the premier division.
The respect and admiration he gained at that club can never be quantified.
His subsequent return to Melville as a player and administrator (including
President) further demonstrates his commitment to the club where he is associated.
Geoff’s communication skills are so good that he was appointed Australian
Team Coach/ Manager from 1999-2003.
This is quite an accomplishment for a West Australian.
It is well known that due to our geography to the rest of Australia we are
at a significant disadvantage when being considered for such positions regardless
of the sport.

with a superior percentage!).

Obviously until Taylors became available in Australia I used the stock standard

THE MAKING OF A SINGLES PLAYER
May 19, 2006
I didn’t set out to become a singles player. But it was obvious that singles
was the “glamour” event which grabbed the headlines and earned the most recognition,
and to achieve higher goals I would need to improve my singles game.
Back in the seventies and into the eighties the dominant singles players
were Bert Sharp, Joe Rodin and a handful of others. I wondered what was different
about these guys, why they were consistently winning events despite the efforts
of many good bowlers to try and beat them.
And I guessed that these champions, apart from outstanding bowling skills,
possessed the ability to concentrate for long periods of time … to ignore
distractions and focus only on the winning post.
So how could I learn this extra skill?
I started by reading everything I could on the subject. Very little was available
specific to bowls, but there was heaps of material dealing with other sports
and sports psychology in general.
I grabbed every opportunity to “pick the brains” of champions with whom I
came in contact … Albert Newton, Glyn Bosisto, David Bryant, John Snell,
Ken Williams and others … observing them and their unique singles strategies.
The end result was that I became a better-than-average singles exponent,
equipped with bits and pieces gleaned from a number of bowlers, including
our own Jack Camm, Stan McCann, Branko Katunarich and Frank Harrison.
At some stage of a singles match most of us have entertained the thought …
“I can win this” or something similar.
Get rid of it!! It is the worst distraction of all and almost certain to
kill your concentration. A useful “mind game” I employed was to ignore the
scoreboard … forget what you or your opponent have scored, count “backwards” … the
number of shots you require to win the match, one at a time if necessary.
Be prepared to concede a shot or two on an end where you might lose a multiple
if you attempt to get the shot … no bowler born can win every end.
But playing skills and mental skills alone will still not do the job.
The successful singles player requires as well … MOTIVATION! In
my own case the desire to represent at State and National level was a strong
motive, but “FEAR OF FAILURE” was responsible
for many successes.
In fact I can recall losing only three major singles finals in forty years
in the game, so strong was my dread of losing.
Does that make me a poor loser? … probably!!
The more recent champions … Schuback, Glasson, Kerkow and our own young guns
such as Anthony Provost and Daniel Trewhella … would each have their own
motivation to succeed. And that other ‘M’ word …MONEY … could
be part of that motivation. Today’s singles champions can compete for big
money on the international scene, in many cases bowls has become a well-rewarded
career.
So you still want to be a singles champion? Go for it!
You only require the physical and mental skills and the motivation … and
a fair amount of time on the track!

The First time Sherro saw John Rainoldi play was at the 1979/80 Interstate
Sides Series held at the Melville Bowling Club.
John was playing as a three for Aussie Baily, He seemed to be out of place
age wise, but so much in place with playing ability.
The age of the other team members was so much older, none the less John was
very calm and very much in control and was the standout player for his rink
in that game
The Next time I saw him play was at Bedford playing as lead in the Trans
Tasman Test series held at Bedford Bowling Club.
John led against the world's best leader, Rowan Brassy. For two days John
acquitted himself extremely well in a very high standard duel against Rowan.
End after end the bowls were sitting pretty close the jack
In the mid 80's and early 90's John Rainoldi was a huge name in the world
of lawn bowls winning three State Pairs titles along with many other titles
with his great friend Dennis Katunarich.
Always tough to beat, John was a player who was gracious in defeat, his gentlemanly
manner and sportsmanship endeared him to his many supporters and opponents
alike.
John Rainoldi is a true Legend of the game

---ROBERT “ROLLS ROYCE” BALL--
If Robbie Ball was a motor vehicle there is no doubt in my mind he would have been a Rolls Royce. Everything he does on a bowling green oozes class. Whether it be drawing, playing through the head or unleashing one his fabulous drives he always looks the part.
That having been said you do not get to represent your country at the Commonwealth Games by looking good. Robbie has the ability that only true champions possess in that he can consistently play the near impossible shot when under extreme pressure.
H
His demeanour on the bowling green is beyond reproach. Whilst he is inwardly
a fierce competitor he is also a true sportsman in that he has always been humble
in victory and gracious in defeat.
I have been filled with admiration for Robbie since the mid 1990’s when playing for North Beach as a third to Geoff Ellis we played the Rolls Royce. With Geoff playing well and our team dominating in the front three positions I doubt that Robbie “changed over” more than twice for the day holding shot.
In a game that should have been a landslide we won by a solitary shot.
Robbie Ball was in a league of his own that afternoon with his extraordinary shot play. However, it was not so much that he had played so brilliantly that impressed but it was the manner in which he treated his team mates.
He never once complained or demonstrated any poor body language despite having
plenty of cause to do so.
I left Doubleview that evening not sure about what impressed me most about this champion, his exquisite skills or his unflappable attitude.
That same quandary stays with me still.
I wish there were more people like Robbie playing the game today.

I did not have the privilege of playing with, or meeting, Bill in our home country of Scotland, but had heard of his deeds through the Scottish bowling world – after all his record speaks for itself.
It was a thrill, therefore, when I heard that he had joined Gosnells Bowling Club, where I was a member.
It was a bigger thrill for me, when I got the opportunity to play pennants and various carnivals with him, and observe the master at work.
On and off the green, Bill is the perfect gentleman.
He is a true sportsman from the old school, but this masks a fierce competitor, who is determined to win every time he steps on to the bowling green – the mark of a true champion. Amongst his other attributes, apart from his obvious bowling skill, are his coolness under pressure, his ability to “read the head”, and his cheeky sense of humour.
He uses this humour on the bowling green to defuse tense situations.
I remember one particular occasion, not long after we started playing pennants together. I was having a dog of a day (some things never change!), and could feel myself getting tenser and tenser. As we crossed over I said to Bill “sorry Bill I’m playing s—t today” “No you’re not” he says, with a twinkle in his eye, “you’re playing much worse than that!” I felt the tension drain away, and went back to enjoying my game, which, of course was the purpose of Bill’s comment.
Finally, it is amazing that Bill has achieved all the success that he has, when he suffers from a severe physical handicap. His eyesight is obviously very poor. As a skip, he never sees one of his team put down a bad bowl. “Your line’s good” he shouts down, as the bowl sails past the head. “Weight’s perfect” he relays, as the bowl ends up 5 feet narrow. This is the measure of the man – never critical of his teammates, always encouraging.
Undoubtedly, he is respected throughout the bowling fraternity of Western Australia, just as he is in the UK.
GRANT NICOL
Bill Galloway arrived here in the West in 1999 and that was about the time I took a break from the game and missed much of what he had started to achieve
He hit the local bowling scene with a bang winning the Doubleview Master Pairs and from there on was always in contention for any major event he entered to play.
The first time I had ever laid eyes on him was in a Premier League pennant game and couldn't help but be impressed with his gentlemanly manner thru the game. He also played an exceptionally good game that day and such good form he and his team were in it became a battle of whether he could get his rink score to 40 and we could to get to 10.
We both missed our target with final score line of 39/9.
Even though we had lost by that margin Bill was very kind and showed his humorous side and we had a great laugh about the game.
As I got to know Bill better it was apparent that he was a bowls junkie that just loved the game so much.
When he became a State selector he took the job seriously and it was noticable that he always attended all finals of major events .
The arrival of Bill Galloway to the bowling scene here in West Australia has enhanced the competition in all manner of ways.

I started playing bowls at my local bowling club - Gorebridge- in 1970. I had gone to the club with a freind for a quiet drink. Someone asked me if I would like to give bowls a try and I did.

How does the standard of bowls compare between Scotland and Australia?
I think the Australian standard of club bowls is higher than Scotland.
State titles in Australia are equivalent to Scottish Titles and Australian Titles are equivalent to British Isles Tiles.
Overall I would say that playing standards are higher in Australia.
Other sporting achievements
Before I started playing bowls, I played golf for a few years . I won a handicap singles trophy
Best moments
My first International selection in 1982. The icing on the cake was that the rink in which I led took an eight off the England rink skippered by Peter Line.
Worst moment
Being presented with a box of After Eight Mints after losing an eight in a carnival in Aberdeen
Type of bowl preferred:
In Scotland I used Taylor's International size 5. Indoors I used Tyrolites size 7.
When I arrived in Australia I used Henselite Classic 2, then changed to Henselite Dreamline. I have come to the conclusion that the perfect bowl does not exist.

One of the country’s greatest women bowlers, Roma Dunn began bowls in 1977 following a knee injury sustained at netball.
She was noticed by the State Selectors after winning the State Champion of Champions Singles and represented W.A. at the 1992 National Women’s Round Robin in Sydney....
Roma has been a State representative at every Round Robin since. Her first appointment to the national side was in the 1995 Pacific Games where she played triples and fours, and she remained in the side until 2006 (except for a brief retirement following the Commonwealth Games in Manchester)....
Roma and husband Kevin were involved in the hotel industry from 1974 to 2001 when they retired and moved to Mandurah. They have a family of 4 (3 girls and 1 boy) and 9 grandchildren.
Roma has the respect and admiration of bowlers throughout Australia, not only for her talent but for her sportsmanship and friendly manner and the support and encouragement she gives to fellow team members and newer bowlers.
The sport of bowls is richer for having had Roma Dunn participate as a competitor.
Where and how did you start ?
I started playing in 1977.
We were running a Tavern at the time and went to the York Races which ended up being washed out. We stopped at the Darling Range Hotel on the way home to have a refreshment
I was talking with Bill Burnet and told him that I used to play Basketball and Netball but had to stop playing because of a knee injury .
Bill asked me if I would like to play Lawn Bowls, jokingly I said yes.
So it was, that I went to the Cockburn Bowling Club for a roll up, in those days players had to wear the proper gear even for a roll up.
I fronted up in Lila Munday's dress, Laurie Delavere's hat and used my Mum's bowls.
I became a member of the Kwinana Bowling Club and have loved the game from that day.
