Round Nine One Red Division 14-01-06Click here to Return to Pennant Scene

almost as expected in round Nine
The Cambridge Knights win A crunch game against the Bedford Bulls. This was a great victory for the Cambridge knights, Sitting on top of the table prior to this game and needing a win to confirm their rightful status as the best team in W.A. To come to the home ground of the well performed Bulls and take them to the cleaners leaves Bedford with some questions to ask.
What a differrence the recruits have made to the Cambridge unit. What an improvement for the players that were in the team from last year.

Victoria Park keep their word and play to their potential after the Xmas break. Wanneroo undo all the great work they performed last week and it says clearly they are too inconsistant. The Vic Park win has reignited the fight for relegation and kept a lot interest at that end of the table
Leeming are too good for Yokine who never give in on most Saturdays and we must say that The Yokine Doggies are a credit to the competition and themselves for the way they are having a red hot go.
Cockburn are simply too good for Osborne Park in a very tight game
Doubleview remind all other teams what they are capable of in their win against Melville today

CAMBRIDGE QUOTE " Sherro, we have been looking relegation in the eye for the past three years, last year didn't tell how hard we were at it. This year is just something else. Our recruits have made a difference and now we have the confidence and belief that we can go all the way. Bedford are no pushovers and we did not expect it to be easy, especially here. Well, we have got what we came for, the big end of the points and we will have a quite celebration at the club and look toward the next game."
CHRIS LANDER

BULL QUOTE " Thank God for Merredin, and the Jones Boy "

Cambridge (6.5) beatBedford (1.5 ) ..........83/ 68.........

In the game of the round, and game of the season, One side had to make way. The Cambridge 16 came, played, and conquered the Bulls for top spot. This was even more meritorious because it was at Bedford's home ground.
This was no ordinary victory, it was a season defining game, Cambridge were simply to classy, to committed and shoved the lame Bulls into the think about it dept.

The Jones Boy and his rink are the only undefeated rink in One Red.

=========================================================

The Jones Boy { skip}, B. Richardson. Paul Hunter, J. Carlsen----------25

J.Rainoldi {skip}, Jarrod Rainoldi. Irvin, Aj Heal -----------------------13
The Jones Boy has kept his unbeaten run going with a huge win over The legendary John Rainoldi, In a bad start to the game for the Jones Boy, they were 0/8 down on the 4th end. Not the kind start one would wan't against such opposition. However things went better because at the 8th end the Jones Boy was 7/9 down and back in the game. From here John Rainoldi and his rink put their foot on the accelerator and scooted away to lead 12/7 on the 12th end. From this point it was goodby John, Hell0 Jones boy, because his rink won every end except the last end, the score was 25/13. This rink remains unbeaten and at this stage is the best rink in W.A.

The game was not a high standard game according to the Bedford boys

Best players for the Bulls was Richo and The Jones Boy

P. Harris {skip} N. Minchin, M.Illich ,F. Andrich...................9
T. Smallacombe {skip} S. Edmonds ,N. Lewis, B. Kiely...........25

Well it wouldn't get better than this. Trystan Smallacombe versus Pieter Harris. Great team mates in last years fabulous performance in the State Side series, going head to head for top of the table honours.
What a let down in terms of a contest, The Harris led rink was the second best rink in W.A and to let a game like this slip with a poor performance has got to be a concern. Trystan Smallacombe has done a terrific service to Cambridge with his well performed rink and to win today by such a margin would have surprised him, especially because it was at Bedford and who he was playing against

Brian Kiely Cambridge (Pictured) brilliant leading sets up victory against Pieter Harris

After 8 ends had been played Trystan was leading 16/0. Yes that score is correct. From here, Bedford staged a fight back to be 3/24 down on the 13th end. Things got worse!! Cambridge were 29/5 on the 19th end and finally won 29/9.
This was a dismal performance from a side that was competing for top spot and question marks are in order for this rink that has had two significant losses in two of the last three games.
The leader Brian Kiely had an outstanding game for Cambridge and set up this brilliant victory. Trystan Smallacombe said his team were very good and with Brian leading so well it made the job pretty easy for the rest of the rink
-
Best player for Cambridge was the leader Brian Kiely.

S.Bainbridge {skip}, J. Trewhella, M. Lemos, M. Trewhella.----17
B. Katunarich {skip},M. McGann, G. Kane, W. Maher------------24

A very tough encounter between these two sides. The front end were going hard at it and Bedford led 6/5 on the 6th end. Cambridge had a nice run and led 12/7 on the 11th end and appeared to be cruising along. The Bedford Rink lifted to to lead 17/16 on the 17th end.
Mick McGann in the mean time was playing above and beyond with a brilliant game and causing all sorts of havoc for Bedford with his bowls.
Well it was the end of the journey for the Bedford rink on the 17th end because they were unable to score again and went down 17/24.
The leaders Matt Trewhella and W. Maher had a battle royal with honours about even in a good display of bowls .

Mick McGann (Left) and Brian Katunarich celebrate with a couple of coldies after their big win at Bedford

Mick McGann
was the the man with a great game for Cambridge

========================================================

Lance Strahan {skip}, Barry Gartrell ,Shane Shaw, K. Collins----------17
R. Stockton (skip), C. Lander, T. Walsh, H. Christensen. ----------------17

This game was important not only for Bedford but also for Lance Strahan, There had been form concerns of late, and controversy regarding who should skipper the side.
Lance has answered all concerns with a telling game of bowls today,
After 10 ends the score was 8/8 and things were tough going for both sides and as we reached the 19th end we see that 15/13 in favour of Lance, 20th end 17/13 in favour of Lance and then the impossible happened. Lance knocked a bowl of Cambridge up and went down four to tie the game. But the important thing was the performance of Lance Strahan who is a key member in this team of 16 players.

Best for Bedford was skipper
Lance Strahan

Cockburn (6.5) DEF Osborne Park (1.5)...........78/ 74....
A couple of outstanding performance from John Goddard and Daniel Trewhella were not enough to get Osborne Park over the line in the big game at Osborne Park today. Cockburn can play anywhere and win on any surface. The very solid win from the Joe Galipo rink against Bill Galloway was the main reason for victory today with a good 25/14 win
Russell Hughes beat Wings Evans who can't seem to win a game these days in a close encounter 23/20
John Goddard and Daniel Brown had a draw 18/18 and word was John Goddard had a big game in this match
Daniel Trewhella and young team turned up to have a really solid crack at winning this game against Steve Srhoy and came away handsome winners 22/12. information from this game was Daniel was in brilliant form.

=============================================================

Leeming (7)
DEF Yokine (1)...............83/68...
Steady as she goes for Leeming, winning as most would have predicted. The return to form of the Wayne Heldt led rink has continued with a handy win against Sid McCann 25/14. Anthony Provost won against Rookie skipper Adrian Feltham who had won had his first two games for Yokine, 26/18.
Rhett Butler won against Ian Cooper who has had some decent size hidings this season with a one shot win 20/19. It was a very commendable effort by the Cooper led rink to almost take out the game against a very tough rink to beat.
Alan Davis continues to be the shining light at Yokine with an emphatic win against Bruce Edward's rink 23/12.

==================================================

Victoria Park (8) beat Wanneroo (0)..................100/52...
Victoria Park come good, and display what they are capable of doing by crushing the Wanneroo Express. All rinks fired at the same time for the first time this season.
Rooster Wishart's rink getting back into gear after a run of outs and a position change in the side came up with a comprehensive win against the Ron Bates led rink 25/5. The leaders in this game had a great dual with honours pretty even, however that man again, Yes, Charlie McNeil played a superb game playing as the two had another day out and destroyed whatever Grahame Adamini put near the jack with beautiful weighted bowls.
Mark Simpson and his rink have contiued on their merry way with another vital win for V.P. winning against Clive Adams 22/14.
Justin Opie won again getting hold of the gun rink at Wanneroo led by Geoff Ellis 26/18, and that was a pretty big ask for the rink to acheive a win against a quality side.
Steve Withers and his rink weren't going to be left out of this very important win by completing a clean sweep with victory against Stein Davies 22/13.
One would think all would be forgotten and forgiven and there would have been a big celebration last night at V.P
==================================================

Doubleview (6) Melville (2) ...................89/ 74....
Robbie Ball and his rink came back to great form after last weeks bad loss and had a ball with a handsome win today against Colin Fleay winning 30/8 and with a score like that it is hard for any opposition team win .
Pat Buller, Ross Dempsey, Ken Screech and Jim Bausor won in convincing fashion to knock over Cameron Girvans rink 27/17
Jon Sharp, S. Hughes, R. Barnes,J Birch continue on with another good performance to beat John Slavich 21/16. Jon has done well since returning to play in One Red, his rink is not as strong as Tony Krajancic's well performed rink of last year but he getting great results for the Magic.
Jeff Hall who almost became the first rink to defeat The unbeaten Jones Boy last week put in with another solid win, defeating Kyle McIlroy 28/16.
