Halls Head
October 16, 2009
Halls Head are to congratulated for their continuous increase in membership over the last five years and also for their refurbishment of all their greens to synthetic.
Halls Head will be the venue for South Western Zone's Interleague Round Robin played on Jan 9th and 10th 2010, when the best bowlers in the South West will be playing.
It is a pity that SW bowlers playing in the Premier League, such as Rob Bowron, Adrian Durrant and Daniel Wood are not eligible to play in this event as they are capitated with metro clubs.

Stirling name their opening 16 for the new season
October 19, 2009
The Stirling Bowling Club had a 250 strong crowd packed into the Club house yesterday for the naming of the their pennant sides which shows the passion its members have for the game.
After two successive seasons of failure to win promotion to the Premier League there is now a feeling of anticipation that this will be 3rd time lucky for Stirling.
They have recruited one of the best in the business, Marko Krajancic, a name associated with success and also committed to taking a young player with a big future, Shane Knott who comes onboard in an effort to give the club the edge it needs to make it all happen.

It is all happening, firstly Harley Rankin from Osborne Park then Kevin McKay from Gosnells and now Ryan Philpott from Warnbro, all such young players winning Club Championships on the weekend.
Warnbro's Ryan Philpott (12 year old) will have his name on the honour board for winning the Club Triples.
He was the lead in a team that had Willie Tan (sk) and Russell Bates.
We have seen the name of
young Ryan Philpott previously in an off season event, things are looking good for the young fellah.

Cabramatta win National Premier League
Many thanks to the Pine Rivers Bowling Club and to Des in particular
October 11, 2009
N.S.W Bowling Club Cabramatta are the National Premier League Championships, they won all three games losing on just one rink and we offer our congratulations to them on their great performance
Doubleview President Pat Buller was full of praise to the Pine Rivers Bowling club saying they were looked after like Kings and have had a terrific time from the moment they arrived.
Pat felt the event needed more teams competing such as Victoria. Sth Australia and Tasmania to give it that edge.
Doubleview, it would seem didn't play to
their true ability after managing just one win in this series of games.
Looking at the result of the first game against Cabramatta there couldn't be such a vast gap between the sides as to what the score indicates but Pat was very frank in saying that the PowerHouse had been smashed.
From a West Australian point of view it was a tad disappointing to see a result of that magnitude from our Premiership side, but unfortunately these things do happen from time to time.
Let us hope the concept will grow to be bigger and better next year with more sides competing

Smoking Drinking issue
Re Smoking & Drinking on banks.
Am I missing something here?
Have the bowling clubs of Western Australia asked for this issue to be resolved by Bowls WA?
Have the clubs or delegates raised this as an issue to be reviewed?
If the answer to the above is NO – then would someone explain to me why it is being raised at all?
Does this issue effect lawn bowls in any shape or form?
Bowls WA should perhaps be managing the HEALTH of the SPORT not the participants.
Spend some of your time producing activity that will bring new people to our sport and help clubs that are struggling to pay their way.
Surely this would be a far better investment of the association’s time.
Or is this whole question of drinking and smoking tied to government department’s support of our sport? If yes then find some other sponsors who wish to be associated with a successful state wide sport and are not interested in changing the culture of its participants.
Get on with the job of running bowls in WA and get off the health kick.

Under 25 team for W.A
September 2, 2009
Hi Sherro,
Majority of the other states have an under 25 squad of which sides are picked to compete against the other states. I feel that this is a good way to gain more experience and perhaps prepare younger players for mens state in the future.
What do you or your readers think about Western Australia developing an under 25 squad?
I think that there are players that left juniors 2 or 3 years ago that could lead the way and definently have the talent to compete with the other states in this age group.
Good Bowling

Correction
August 11, 2009
We stated in our round up of the AHG Motor Group Open Split Fours that only one side had gone thru the series undefeated. This was incorrect, the Wagin team led by Lady skip Osborne Park's Pam Haynes won 6 games and drew in two of their pairs games therefore going thru the carnival undefeated.
This is a great effort from them, the card was mislaid and that is why we could only attempt to name the side which is now correct as to how the side lined up
Pam Haynes (sk), John Davidson, Warren Holt, Steve Trowel.
Great job and well done to the Tweed Heads Bowling Club
August 7, 2009
Tweed Heads Bowling Club thru Greg Kelly have done it again confirming they are the leading Bowling Club in Australia, there is not much doubt that Tweed Heads is the mecca of Lawn Bowls in the Southern hemisphere.
It has been overdue to have a round robin for all State Singles winners and thankfully that Tweed Heads turned their Golden Nugget into a showcase for our State Champions is to be applauded.SOUTH
It was so good to be able to log in and see the scores updated every five minutes for all games, a very professionally run club is Tweed Heads.
Wasn't it also good to see the game played straight, first to 25 instead of the lucky game we call sets play, it is a blight on the game to have sets play for our major events where the player who plays best might not win the game and often it is the case...
Well done to Tweed Heads on a great Golden Nugget
Steve Glasson Golden Nugget Champ
August 6, 2009
Steve Glasson won the final of the Tweed Heads Prestige invitation Classic, he defeated Lee Schraner 25/15.
Steve went thru undefeated beating all the State Singles Champions, a terrific performance and once again underlining his status on the Australian Bowls scene
He did have some moments where it looked like he would get beaten thru some of his games but always found that bit extra when needed, a great Champion and congratulations Steve Glassonhall
Congratulations also to Therese Hastings on her magnificent effort to make the final, great stuff Therese

"Don't take your guns to town Son"
August 2, 2009
That is how the old tune goes, Don't take your guns to town Son, leave your guns at home son, leave your guns at home.
Well! Anthony Provost has ignored the lines of that old song and is taking his guns to town!!
And those guns are Mike Murray, Tim Murray and State Pairs Champ Ron Bates. It is a pretty solid rink and has plenty ooomph. They would not be favourites as there are many other sides who have plenty of desire to win this fabulous event which will give every team a chance to win

Yesterday it was all the way with W.A, today (this morning) it was all the other way for W.A as our three reps were beaten in their morning games.
Brian Axford lost his morning game by three shots in great performance against Cory Daly 25/22 However Brian won his next game to stay alive in the competition, two games to go, he will play Nathan Rice in one of them.
This a great perfomance by Brian to do as well as he has so far. The Ladies Roma Dunn and Therese Hastings also won their afternoon games and are still in with a chance of winning their section to qualify for the finals

Kardinya sets the standard with some exciting news
July 15, 2009
The Kardinya Bowling Club are setting the pace both on and off the greens
Now Known as the Kardy Kats the club will become the first in W.A to have their greens under shade
Approval is all done & the shade cloth will installed by early September, the company doing the job has done over 30 clubs in the eastern states.
Greens will be fully covered & the shade will be 12ft above the green.
It is fully motorized & only takes 2 minutes for the shade to be on or off.
Kardinya greens are fantastic in the winter but they slow down as soon as the weather gets hot.
We have been informed that it will be 10 – 15 degrees cooler under the shade so we are very excited about how our greens will run this season.
Also the benefit to members of keeping cool & out of the sun on those stinking hot days in summer will be great.
There will be an opening day once they are installed

News from the Cockburn Bowling Club
July 8, 2009
The newly appointed board of management at the Cockburn BC is working hard to ensure that the new teams for the 2009/10 pennant season will be well prepared.
The first and foremost issue has been to address the quality of the greens and with the appointment of a new greenkeeper, we are excited about the prospect of having the greens running like they were at their peak.
Some new sponsorship options are being finalised currently, this will allow us to put some exciting initiatives in place for the new season.
One such initiative is to establish a Youth Bowls Academy at the Cockburn BC for South of the River - with plans well under way.
Whilst the club has regrettably lost some quality players, there are some great new recruits also. Further expressions of interest are most welcome.
There will be coaching clinics running every Saturday morning during August and September, for beginners and experienced bowlers.
Visko Park plans are well under way, and the club has recognized the need to be in a strong position in readiness for the relocation in the next two years.

The two W.A sides left in the field led by John "Guts" Goddard and Neale Griffin have both been eliminated. Neale Griffin was a winer of this event a couple of seasons back.
They can well feel proud of their efforts in this morning's games.
John and his rink of "The Professor" Bill Galloway, Freddie DiGuiseppe and "The General" Grant Nicol were beaten by Brian Baldwin, a legend up in Queensland.
The game was tight, tight, tight all the way thru with "Guts" and his rink holding sway for over half the game but had to withstand the brilliant driving of Brian Baldwin.
After leading by a 4 shots on end 14 for "Guts", Brian Baldwin's rink hit the front to lead 20/17 on the 20th end.
John and his boys got a 3 to force an extra end to be 20/20 but went down to another explosive drive by Brian Baldwin who put the kitty in the ditch on the extra end allowing his rink to win by one.
Neale Griffin, John Morss, Farley Anderson and Scott Walker also played a brilliant game to go down by one shot after coming home with a strong finish, they were down 6/12, made it 13/12, lost ground to 13/18, finally hitting the front to lead 23/21 then 23/23 on end 21 then lost the extra end to lose 23/24
It was a remarkable morning with three of the four games going to an extra end.

Fee waived for State Squad
July 15, 2009
The State Squad to be announced soon will initially have no fee attached to membership.
It has been decided to waiver the fee for players selected in the initial squad of 32.
There will be a fee of $100.00 when the selectors cull the squad down from 32 to 16.
The squad will eventually be culled further to the final 12 players to be selected, they will be required to pay $300.00 to represent W.A.
There will be trial matches for the squad starting in September which will be followed by trials in November and December
My article below was written on what has been stated previously by BowlsWA, that all squad members would have to pay $150 to be involved.

Open Pairs
Erron Martin and Joe Spadaro played at South Tweed on Sunday in a section of 4 teams on lightening fast 16+ second green.
Their first game was against the strong Defence Force team of J Fitzgerald (NSW) and D Reeves who plays for Hilton Park in WA.
The Army boys jumped out to a 12 - nil lead early then Erron and Joe pegged that back with some solid bowls to only go down by 2.
Their second game was against a local Tugan team of Jamie Cannon and Bob Nickol who weren't at their best and the WA boys won that game by 11 shots. Giving them a 1 win 1 loss + 9 shots up with a game to play against Steve Piggott (who was a finalist in the 2007 Australian Singles).
They had won 2 games +14 so Erron and Joe needed to beat Steve Piggot by 3 shots or more to progress. The boys played their best bowls of the day with Joe plonking lead bowls on the jack and Erron making some big conversions to get over the line by the 3 shots needed and win the section by 1 shot.
They now progress to the last 32 and play on Wednesday 9 July 2009 at Mermaid Beach.
The boys also teamed up with Phil McDonald (SA) and local Tugan selector Mark Baker to play in the fours in the section with none other than Nathan Rice and a star studded team from Helensvale and also local champion Steve Shroy who eventually won the section.
Erron's rink had a close contest against Nathan Rice only going down by 1 shot after leading for 14 of 15 ends.
The team were in a winning position late in the game but were beaten by a brilliant conversion shot from Nathan Rice and ended up going down by a couple of shots.
Golden Nugget field
July 6, 2009
Tweed Heads thru Greg Kelly have released the field for the 2009 Golden Nugget Singles.
This event is choc full of interest with Brian Axford representing W.A in this outstanding field which has bought together the best Bowlers in Australia.
Roma Dunn is our Lady Singles representative and Roma would be a huge chance to win the Ladies title.
Therese Hasting has recieved a wild card invitation because of her outstanding performances and we wish for our players do to do well in this event.
Brian has made a steady rise to the top
with his singles game and just the experience of playing in such an event will be fantatstic for him. However Brian will be very competitive and only has to play like he did when he won the State Singles back in January to be a thorn to who ever he meets.
Roma Dunn has credentials money couldnt buy and has been a fabulous performer over many years, dont be surprised to see Roma win it
Therese will still get a thrill to play in this great event and with her all round performances over the past few years will hold her in good stead to do well here.

The WA boys and girls were back on the greens yesterday in the section play for the mixed triples with some success.
Farley Anderson playing with Bernice Bryant who is a local and a top player I am told, together with Scott Walker won their section as did Neale Griffin, Helen Morse and Mitch Biglin.
Anne Crabb is also through she is playing with Ian Hughes and Barry Nicol. I am not familiar with the origin of the guys.
All the teams continue in the knockout rounds today (Saturday) at the magnificent facility at Paradise Point.

Two W.A teams in the last eight of the GC Winter Fours
Link to WinterCarnival
July 7, 2009
Two West Australian teams have made the last 8 of the Gold Coast Winter Fours.
A team led by Kalamunda Tiger skip Neale Griffin, Farley Anderson, John Morss, and Scott Walker won their way into the last 8.
Neale Griffin, and Scott Walker have both been winners of this event a couple of years ago when they were in a rink that defeated Kelvin "The King" Kerkow and his side of youngsters
The other team to make the finals is the Osborne Park Saints side led by John Goddard (sk), Professor William WB (wrong Bias) Galloway, Fred DiGuiseppe, and Grant "General" Nicol. They won both games today and one of them against Alan Shillington a former State Player
Steve Shroy together with Neville Stevens, Allen Erceg and John Morgan played in the fours section of 6 teams and on the first day they won their first game, drew their second game against Shaun Bearman from Perth Tatts playing with Stan Curtis also.
They then won their third game against Erron Martin. Going into the second day they played Nathan Rice and his star studded premier league Helensvale outfit. Nathan's team had won all three games on the first day therefore Steve and the boys needed to win this game and the next to progress.
The game against Nathan was neck and neck and going into the last end the scores were locked at 14 all. Steve "the slammer" Shroy, last bowl in his hand, never in doubt drew the shot within 4 inches. Then won his last game to progress to the last 16.
It was then that the heavens opened up and the organisers made a decision to take the knockout round indoors at the Tweed Heads complex.
Steve played against a composite team from New Zealand with a father and two sons playing skipped by J Dixon. This game was close all game with the lead changing often. Neville Stevens was playing fine bowls at 3 and Steve Shroy was also dominant.
The New Zealand team however played well as a four and their consistency won them the game by 3 shots. It was a fine effort by the West Australians and they should be commended on their game.

W.A players out of the Gold Coast Pairs
July 8, 2009 3:07 PM
Both W.A sides were defeated. John Goddard and Fred DiGuiseppe were defeated in the second game of the day against Shane "Glowboy" Globits.
The boys got away to a bad start in very wet, windy and blustery conditions to find themselves down 10/3 then 16/9 with half the game completed.
All appeared to be lost when they staged a brilliant comeback to head Shane Globits and J. Mills off and to lead 18/17. Unfortunately that is where the comeback ended for John and Fred. Shane Globits and J. Mills won 27/20.
July 9, 2009
Erron Martin and Joe Spadaro knocked out of pairs
on a wet and windy morning at Mermaid Beach the WA boys realy struggled with a slow green and very strong winds to get well beaten by a team from South Melbourne skipped by B Padgham.
The Vic team were quick to get hold of the slow pace and shot out to a 10/2 lead early, Erron and Joe staged a mini comeback in the middle stages and got back to be down 10/7 then fell away to get well beaten 26/7 .
As Rick Eddy would say one day you are the hammer next day the nail, I guess thats why we bowlers keep coming back .
For those following the fortunes of WA boys in the carnival, not only did Vince Beckley win his knockout round but in the morning game but got an 8 as well, well done Vince must be those new white bowls mate . Vince progresses to the last eight now and we wish him luck .
GoldCoast Men's Singles
Neale Griffin made the last 8 of the Gold Coast Winter Singles going down to Brian Baldwin who is a very highly rated player up on the Gold Coast but we can say well done to Neale who has been promising something for a while in Singles games. M. Piggot made the last 16 and we say well done to him.

Winter Gold Coast Pairs on Today

W.A have two sides in the Pairs today, John Goddard and Fred DiGuiseppe will play one of the best players on the Gold Coast, Brian Baldwin who is a spectacular player and with his partner J. Reid are sure to make life difficult for Guts and Fred.
The other W.A side to be playing is Erron Martin who is a sponsor of our site and Joe Spadaro.
They have done a great job to win their way thru the section play and are sure to give a very good account of themselves.
John Goddard and Fred DiGuiseppe make it into the next round
November 13, 2009 8:34 PM
John Goddard and Fred DiGuiseppe have won their way into the last 16 of the Gold Coast Winter Pairs defeating the very hard to Beat local hero Brian Baldwin and New Zealander John Reid 19/15 in a tough game.
Things dont get any easier for John and Fred, they will now play Shane Globits who is another sensational player. Good luck to our W.A Boys and lets hope we see them progress further
Kelvin "The King" Kerkow
July 1, 2009
Kelvin Kerkow once again demonstrated that he is the best player in Australia and would be very high on the list of bowlers in world rankings after his spectacular showing in the Prestige Open Mixed Singles over the four days of the event at Tweed Heads
He had a very comfortable win against Brett Wilkie the current Australian Open Singles champ.
The only player to push King Kelvin was Hec Beswick who went down by just one shot. Kelvin had come from a long way back to win that game.
It says something for the older bowlers and also for our own John Morgan who put up a terrific game against Hec and lost 25/18.
In all other games Kelvin Kerkow won in a cake walk
showing just how far ahead he is of the top players in Australia.

Osborne Park pair on track in Qld
July 4, 2009
A day of drama to start with when the Osborne Park boys went for a roll up in preparation for the Qld Gold Coast Open Pairs the following day.
Bill Galloway and General Nicol played John Goddard and Fred DiGuiseppe winning by a huge margin, 21-3 was the official score and the winners won a carton of beer, so we can see it was game on
July 4, 2009
BAD NEWS
The next day arrived and more drama! the unbeleiveable happened, Bill Galloway's bowl hit a bump in the green and went in the wrong direction, veering off to the next rink, Bill suggested his bowl hit a bump.
We have found out that the bowl went down on the wrong bias, the good news was the bowl had the correct weight and was almost a resting toucher on the next rink.
More bad news for Bill and the "General", they were leading 12/5 on end 9 and lost by 5 shots. They have unfortunately been eliminated from the Qld Open Pairs.
GOOD NEWS
Guts and Fred won their section and will continue next Wednesday against a very tough competitor in Brian Baldwin.
Sadly, no other West Aussies won their section
today leaving our hopes lying in the very capable hands of Guts Goddard and Fred DiGuiseppe

Bowls can be a funny game at times. Steve Srhoy defeated the biggest legend of the game Steve Glasson in round two, was put out of the Tweed Heads Open Mixed Singles this morning after going down 5/25 to Robert Cresswell. The size of the loss is somewhat surprising but it happens to the best of of best from time to time.
Farley Anderson is steaming ahead
in his third game and looks a likely winner at this stage of his game
W.A all done as Farley Anderson and Neale Griffin lose their morning games.
Farley lost to Kelvin Kerkow 25/4 and what a great thrill for Farley to be able to play one of the worlds best talents.
Neale Griffin went down to Chris Lehfeldt 25/14.
There are a few more events to be played over the next few weeks for us to keep an eye out for our W.A players so stay tuned

Helen Morss was beaten in her first game this morning while the result for Neale Griffin is not known at this stage.
June 28, 2009
Steve Srhoy has won both games today in the Tweed Prestige Open Mixed Singles. A big victory for Steve today when he rolled Steve Glasson in a tight game in the the second round. Last year Steve Srhoy made it thru to the last 8 and lets hope he can go even better this year.
Nifty Neville Stevens lost his opening game as did
John Morgan who was eliminated by Hec Beswick. Alan Erceg who won his first game had to take on Hec but unfortunetly Alan went down..
Liz West done well to win her first game but lost her second.

Internations doing a great job

The Internations carnival held annually in May of each year was held at Doubleview Bowling Club this season.
The committee met on Wednesday night and decided this years donation to PMH will be $8000, one of our biggest donations (if not the best).
The success of this years carnival is due to the hard work done by Ken Screech, Roger Barns, President Pat Buller and the members of Doubleview.
Doubleview has definately raised the bar with their professionalism and hard work and will be a hard act to follow.Coloured
After Doubleview, the committee will return the carnival to South of the River for 2011 & 2012, with Melville,Manning, Thornlie and Hilton Park being asked to submit a presentation to stake their claim.
