Internations doing a great job

June 12, 2009
The Internations carnival held annually in May of each year was held at Doubleview Bowling Club this season.

The committee met on Wednesday night and decided this years donation to PMH will be $8000, one of our biggest donations (if not the best).

The success of this years carnival is due to the hard work done by Ken Screech, Roger Barns, President Pat Buller and the members of Doubleview.

Doubleview has definately raised the bar with their professionalism and hard work and will be a hard act to follow.

After Doubleview, the committee will return the carnival to South of the River for 2011 & 2012, with Melville,Manning, Thornlie and Hilton Park being asked to submit a presentation to stake their claim.

Kyle McIlroy wins the Mackie Medal

May 11, 2009
Congratulations to Kyle McIlroy who won the Mackie Medal for season 2008/9 in close result from John Slavich.
Kyle started the season out as a skipper for the first 7 games and switched to play as a three for the remainder of the season.
John Slavich a previous winner was the runner up missing out by one point.

The big surprise was the very good season Ken Screech had polling enough votes to come third.
Ken has in the past been a fill in player and played mainly in the second side for the PowerHouse.

This placing should just about keep him in the side permanently

Congratulations to David Opie the winner of Cambridge Knights Premier League best player award known as 'The Brownlow" for season 2008/9.
This is a credit to David who was recruited to play for the Knights in 2008 to take out the award, especially in his first season as a Premier League skipper.

David has measured up to the toughest task there is in pennant bowls, the position of playing as a Premier League skipper.

Pieter Harris also recruited to the club for season 2008/9 has done well to finish second

Cockburn win Mid Week Pennant final

April 10, 2009
Cockburn won the Mid-Week Pennant playoff when they defeated Osborne Park by 4 shots.

Steve Srhoy bt John Goddard by 25/17

Alf Jones bt Pat Caffell by 29/17

Dave Rankin bt Daniel Brown 34/17. All other rinks had finished and Dave led 33/8 with four ends to go.
OP led by 5 shots on the major board. Daniel Brown's rink picked up a 3,2,4, and lost a 1 on the last end.
Cockburn won by 4 shots

These last ends proved to be the difference in the end result and Cockburn can now fly the Mid-week Premiership 2008/9 flag at their club.

We saw unusual circumstances in the mid-week finals this season

Osborne Park had two players John Goddard and David Rankin missing for their second semi- final game against Cockburn due to State duties, they applied for dispensation from BowlsWA which was granted.

The game was rescheduled to be played the following Wednesday.

Cockburn had other sides playing in other grades in mid week finals and found they were unable to muster a full side with 5 players unable to get time off work for the Wednesday gameReg

Cockburn forfeited the second semi final and played the next day (thursday) in the preliminary final and defeated Doubleview to set up their Grand Final appearance with Osborne Park at Morley

Matthew France doing well

April 8, 2009

Matthew France (Junior Bowler), from Merredin won his Club Singles Championship and then went on to win the league championship singles.

I really don't have final details of the play offs, but this is a major achievement for a young man who will be 17 this year and represented the W. A. Swans ( Junior development team) at the Inter State series played at Dudley Park in January this year.

Matthew will play in the State junior championships that will being hosted by Osborne Park Bowling .

Western Australia has a rich vein of junior talent that will be on show during these championships, and considering that we don't have the financial backing and development programs that the eastern states power house states like Queensland and N.S.W.

The raw talent that W.A. produces, should make us all proud to be Sandgropers as they continue to excel at local, state and national level.

Cambridge Singles champ

March 28, 2009
The winner of the Cambridge Club Singles Championship was Harold Christensen.
He defeated Chris Lander 25 - 21

Congratulations to Harold who was unable to commit to play pennants for the full season for Cambridge this season due to work commitments.

His contract finished recently and was able to resume in the Blue side.
Well done Harold on your great achievement

Warnbro finally get the job done

Congratulations are in order when finally after three tries Warnbro has made it to One Blue.

Kyle McIlroy wins the Alan Eddy Medal

March 27, 2009
It was announced last evening that Kyle McIlroy had won the medal.

Having watched most of the games we thought Thomas Mitchell would have had a very good chance.

Others who also might have been considered having good prospects were John Goddard and John Slavich, but congratulations are in order to Kyle.

Many Bowlers would be interested how was this decision was arrived at? It must have been very difficult for the officials who had to determine who the eventual winner was.

Many bowlers have contacted me to ask me if I knew of the formula

Perhaps BowlsWA could let bowlers know what the formula is

News from Wagin

April 1, 2009
A couple of weeks ago I wrote to inquire if any team had ever gone through an entire home & away season without losing a rink at home (as we had achieved at Wagin).

Many of my team mates thought I had jinxed us but I am happy to report that last Sunday we kept that unbeaten rink record intact with a win over Kojonup in the Grand Final.
State player Ross Dempsey spearheaded the win with a resounding 33-10 victory.

To add to Wagin's joy our two teams in second division finished the season in 2nd & 4th place at the end of the home & away but ended up playing each other in the Grand Final.

Wagin Black who finished 4th defeated Wagin White to win the flag.

It is fair to say a few kegs got emptied last Sunday night at the Wagin Bowling Club.

Reggy Humphryson is the current State Senior singles and Pairs winner. Geoff Ellis and Ron Bates have been runner up in the State Singles.(Ron Bates didnt play)

John you will be sadly missed mate.

Our condolences to his family

Dempsey makes immediate impact

February 3, 2009
It did not take long for State player Ross Dempsey to make an impression in the top of the table clash between Wagin and Kojanup this Saturday.

With only a point separating the two teams Ross seemed in a little bit of bother at 10-20 down.

However, Ross done what we all do in this situation and got an 8 bringing the score to 18-20.

He then powered away to win 33-23 over the 25 ends.

For the record Wagin won 6-0 (we only play three rinks in the Great Southern League)

Yes it is true

April 7, 2009
I have recieved enquiries from our visitors regarding news on the State teams, Men and Women.
Pam Glossop our CEO discussed several issues on SportFM 91.3 last Saturday morning.
One of the issues to come up was that in future, players selected for the State Squad would be required to pay $150New

Once in the squad if selected to play and represent W.A they would be required to pay a further $300.00.Old

Pam went on to explain that the $150 would help pay towards the cost running of the high performance program the players would be involved in.

It costs around $2500 per player when the side travels Interstate and the selected players would be required to pay an extra $300 to help offset that cost, making it an overall payment of $450 for each selected player

Pieter Harris announced his retirement from the State side.

He said that he needed a break for 12 months and possibly more.

This series at Tuggernerong hasn't produced the success of past series .

Pieter has proven himself to be an outstanding leader with many solid performances over the past 5 Interstate Sides series to back it up.

We wish him every success for the future and hope that he becomes available down the track

Doubleview fans sing their song just for Sherro

March 29, 2009
As sherro was doing his report last night on yesterday's games I recieved a phone call from my very good mate Lindsay Thorn from Doubleview.

He asked why had I left so early and not stayed on to watch the game against Osborne Park, without waiting for an answer he then said wev'e got this for you Sherro, just listen to this

He, along with my many adoring Doubleview fans and players belted out the Doubleview Club song, it was fantastic, I have just gotta give them plenty of credit, it was sung with plenty of gusto and not a word or tune out of place.

So there we were with me on the phone and joining in singing along with the players as I knew some of the words

Of course it was obvious that it was never intended to stick it up me as one might tend to think.

I have to admit it makes me feel extra special when some of my many fans go out of their way to sing such a great song just for me and it brightened me up no end after trying to get over the Saints loss to them.

Well done to the PowerHouse

Is it a record ?

March 31, 2009
Very much worth a mention

MAYBE IT’S A RECORD

CAN ANYBODY CONFIRM ?

Thornlie second division White completed the home and away matches this season unbeaten – yes that’s right 17 wins and a draw for a grand tally of 120.5 points.

What a brilliant effort from all bowlers who participated.

Thornlie has a lot to be proud of with those 16 or so bowlers, who achieved so well, week in and week out, throughout the season.

The quiet achievers were in the shadow of their One White peers for much of the season, just getting on with the job.

The skippers, Ken Triner, Bruce Deters, Ross MacMillan and Kevin Sayer were a rock as one. They will all do well in 1 Blue next season.

It will be interesting to see whether any club has emulated this level of performance in years past. Can anybody tell us please!

Go boys – we will watch your progress in Blue next year with great interest.

Colin Minson who has done an enormous amount to help promote the game of bowls on radio here in the West over many years will head the team along with Mike Zusman who is another who has given his all in promoting the sport on his weekly Bowls show over many years.

Sherro has been asked to be a part of program and I must say I am delighted to be a part of the broadcast..

The broadcast will be heard on 91.3 FM and also over the internet

We will alert the visitors of the schedule a little later.

Bushfire appeal

March 21, 2009
Gavin Faulkner says thankyou to all who came and supported the State Side v MetroAllstars game which was held to raise funds for the Victorian bushfire appeal.

The night was a success and the final total raised was $2500.00.

Thankyou to Gavin Faulkner

Is it a record ?

March 17, 2009
Wagin First Division has just finished its home & away games and has recorded something very unique.

Whilst losing two aggregates away from home it has gone through the season undefeated at home (nothing remarkable about that) but what is remarkable is that they never lost (or drew) on a rink for the entire season. I wonder how many clubs could claim that they have won every home game and on every rink for an entire season.

For their efforts Wagin move directly into the Grand Final (their opponents to be determined by playoffs) to be played at Wagin.

The oldest ever- surely

March 10, 2009
This is a remarkable acheivment when you take into consideration that Sth Perth is a Premier League club and a man of this age will play in the singles final

Ray Pride will represent the old brigade when he takes on State Squad member Ross Bresland in the South Perth Club Singles on Tuesday night.

Ray who will be 88 years old next month has won the South Perth singles 5 times, the last 22 years ago, while Ross will be chasing his first singles title.

Remarkably Ross won through to the final defeating Matt Ellul 21-1 in the Semi, with a devastating driving game, with Ray sneaking past Bob Bandy 21-16.

The draw vs the drive will make for an interesting final !

Doubleview set the pace.

February 12, 2009
The Doubleview Bowling Club have sent a donation of $1000.00 to the Victorian fire appeal.
Once again we see Aussies come to the fore when disaster strikes.

Many thanks to Doubleview and for their immediate action in donating to their fellow Australians in their most desperate hour of need

I have no doubt that other W.A Bowling clubs will follow the lead of the Doubleview Bowling club and donate to the Victorian fire appeal

W.A people are noted for their generosity and particuarlaly in times such as these

Bassendean donate

February 13, 2009
Bassendean bowling club has also put their hands up and donated $500 to the Victorian fire appeal

Victorian fire Appeal

February 13, 2009
Master Builders Assn and Bowls Past Presidents W.A Social Bowling Clubs assist the Victorian Bushfire appeal with a much needed cash donation.”

On February 11, nearly sixty bowlers played a game of 17 ends at Doubleview in very warm conditions. MBA won 115 shots up to 76 – a handsome 39 shot victory.

As each club normally holds a raffle it was decided that money collected for a combined raffle and miscellaneous personal donations would be a fitting gesture.

This joint effort raised $1042.00, which has been forwarded to the appropriate point of control.

All bowlers and Clubs are encouraged to support this worthwhile cause.

Thanks to everyone for their generosity.

Having a Ball

February 11, 2009
Once again it proves that father knows best as the saying goes.

The famous Ball family had members of that family played one and other in the Mosman V Hilton One White game last saturday.

Norm Ball (Hilton Park) and father of Brad Ball of Mosman Park lined up against one and other.

There were no holds barrred in this critical game for both sides and possibly get even time for Brad.
Norm won the first game 17/14 and improved on that performance in the second meeting and won 22/14 to keep Hilton Park's slender hopes of making the finals alive and to keep them away from the dreaded relegation zone.
As we said "Father knows best"

Well I would like a really long screw

January 7, 2009

Many thanks to David Scott who noticed this and sent it in
Did you see this little gem in the Letters to the Editor section of this morning's West?

I remember Jon Harper-Nelson as the stiff upper lip British-accented announcer on the ABC years ago.

In those days it was hard to imagine that he would even know what a screw was, let alone now (at the ripe old age of 87) forgetting what a screw is

Still - lucky bugger having a spouse who suggests such a thing to him

-----------------------------
"With 2009 upon us I have now learnt the true meaning of old age. Last week, as I lay basking on my verandah, my wife, who had been engaged in some domestic maintenance, came to me and said: "Darling, what I need is a really long screw."
Without a thought I went out to my shed to look for one.

Russell Hughes dropped to play three

February 4, 2009
We have received word that State skipper Russell Hughes has been dropped to play three for the Reds in saturday's big game against Cambridge.

It is hard to understand why he has been changed, last Saturday Russell's front two bowlers were beaten pointless by the Osborne Park lead and second, the score 4/18 down reflects this point.

One might think that the front two players are the ones that need changing.

Jeff Mitchell has replaced Russell Hughes as skipper.

Russell has demonstrated often that he is a great skipper and he will be skip in the up coming Interstate Sides Series in March

Mt Pleasant will play Kardinya on friday night

June 28, 2009
Mt Pleasant will play Kardinya this friday night at Mt Pleasant on the carpet.

Word getting around is Mt Pleasant who have won their last three straight and making a move to make the finals are very confident they can roll the Kardy's.
With names like Brian Jepperson, Geoff White, John Terrell and Hugh McKay to lead the way, who knows, they might cause an upset.

Kardy skips are Danny Comrie, Wayne Heldt, Mike Yates and Terry Ball
