Cambridge sign up a superstar

July 22, 2008
The Cambridge Knights have signed up Pieter Harris to play for the club this coming season.
Pieter Harris stayed in the country last season but has now moved to live in the city. It will be a welcome relief to not have to do the huge amount of traveling he had done for many years
This is a signing of huge proportions and a much needed one if they are to be contenders for the Premiership.
Pieter Harris has been the most consistent skipper at State level over the past five seasons. In his first season at Bedford in 2005/6 he was the best performed skipper in the premier League with 13 wins 5 losses + 62 shots up.
This signing now completes the line up of the skippers for the knights with the well performed Trystan Smallacombe and the Jones Boy along with the untried skipper at this level, David Opie.
Comparing the skippers of Cambridge to the skippers at Doubleview and Vic Park they stack up at least as good or better.
It now becomes a battle of who has the best depth of talent after the skips with these three clubs.
We can't comment about The Osborne Park Saints till their list is done and dusted
There will be some great games between these clubs and something to look forward to this coming season

Vince Beckley

July 10, 2008
Vince Beckley has returned to live in Perth.

Jarrad Rainlodi has done particuarlaly well in the PBA events this season as has Rod Heaton
It was a close game in the semi-final
Semi Final 3 - John Goddard def Rod Heaton 7-7 6-5 in a close contest coming down to the last bowl
We now have the big three to represent W.A
John joins Aaron Delaporte and Shane Knott in that event
WORLD INDOOR PAIRS

Good luck from Kempy

April 9, 2008
Amazing statistic provided on the observers page Sherro about the many people playing on \"non grass surface\" this upcoming weekend.
Is it a sign of the future? I hope not!
Here in Tassie we are all playing on grass and have a reserved day just in case of rain.
I think I\'m from the old school and still love playing on grass but it\'s a shame to see ecominic viability continue to creep into such a wondeful sport and pastime for the 8 year olds to the 80 year olds.
Good luck to everyone playing for a pennant this weekend. That\'s what the sport is all about.

KEMPY

Players needed for a worthy cause

May 2, 2008
As you may be aware, the internations carnival is on this weekend at Carlisle Lathlain, and as manager of the Australian squad we have hit some hurdles.

Unfortunately the event has coincided with the PBA event and we are left a couple of players short (myself included!). It\'s a great day bowling against top quality bowlers and it all aids the Princess Margaret Hospital.

For $25, all proceeds go to charity, over $100,000 to date in nearly 30 years, a bowler can have the chance to represent Australia.

If anyone is keen, especially Saturday, please can they phone me on 0414485521.

Jon Sharp wins the Eddy/Wishart medal

April 3, 2008
Jon Sharp capped off a memorable Interstate Sides series by winning the Eddy/ Wishart medal. Jon was in scintialting touch throughout the carnival and as early as wednesday it appeared that the medal was his. Jon has had an enormous season and to win the medal has capped of a remarkable year for the Doubleview PowerHouse skipper.
It was noticable that Jon was unfazed when the pressure was on him to produce match winning bowls under severe pressure. On most occasions he produced the goods.
Jon is quite a modest man and would rather deflect praise about his game and give praise to his team mates.

Jon Sharp a great skipper for W.A
------Jon Sharp

Another player to rank right up there was Russell Hughes. Those who were lucky enough to see him sizzle in a pressure cooker enviroment today where he produced all the razzle dazzle to get his rink over the line to win his game today with a 10/10 rating, leaving no one in any doubts about his great ability.

Apology to BowlsWA

I am apologising to BowsWA for some inappropriate remarks I made on Monday.
My remarks could have been better worded than they were and one comment was totally unneccesary.

Gordon won the game 21/7. Straight after the game Ian Lodged an appeal to have the bowls that Gordon was using to be tested.
They say it was almost straight up the green with very little bias needed to be taken.
There is no animosity between the two players with this appeal.

We await the out come of the result of this appeal and let everyone know the result

Controversy at the
Australian Open

February 19, 2008
Controversy at the Australian Open
Young Victorians Paul Williamson and Scott Mortimer have moved through to the second round of the ABN AMRO Australian Open pair in controversial fashion after their challenge on the legitimacy of their opponents’ bowls was upheld.

Initially defeated by Tasmanian state champions Tim Douce and Ricki Richardson 8-6, 10-2, Williamson launched a challenge after concerns at the lack of finish on Douce’s bowls.

“I’ve never seen bowls that tight, they were just going straight,” Williamson said. “They were taking less than a foot of grass on the right hand.”

Following tests at Henselite, the bowls were unable to meet the required standards of the crystal mark edition of the laws of bowls, and as a result, the Tasmanian pair was subsequently disqualified.

As per the rules of the game, however, he will now be given the opportunity to appeal to Bowls Australia.

Douce later admitted he was surprised to hear his relatively new bowls were unable to pass the test. “They are a tight set, but I thought they’d be alright, so yeah I’m pretty disappointed,” Douce said.

Williamson and Mortimer now face Commonwealth Games single’ gold medallist Kelvin Kerkow and partner Shannon Gittoes in the second round.

“I’ve never played against Kelvin before so it’ll be fun whatever happens,” Williamson said.

The young Victorian, however, remains concerned he’ll be subject to a backlash from fellow bowlers following this morning’s controversy.

“Even if we go on and win the whole tournament, I’m worried our reputation is still going to be tarnished,” Williamson said.

How would you like to cop this ?

February 14, 2008
Sherro, Please note also in news from over the Australian Open that Darryl Stewart and Scott Walker, who are both attending on scholarships from the South Perth Millers, won all three of their matches in the Pairs yesterday and have progressed through to the main draw.

An interesting rule is the \"ring the bell\" when time is up -

I believe a maximum of two hours - when bowls must stop, even in mid end and the scores count as the end stands !

In their second match at one set all, down by three shots on the board in the decider, but holding four on the last end, the opposing skipper approached the mat AND THE BELL RANG !

Not permitted to play the last bowl of the match, the boys scored a four, got up by one and won the section ! Good grief.

Boy! oh Boy! the umpire of the day has made a huge blue here looking at the conditions of play

PROCEDURE FOR APPLYING TIME LIMITS
End of Play – At the completion of the allocated time, the Tournament Director will signal the end time of play by a bell, horn, etc. At this time players will complete the current end they are playing. (The start of an end is determined by the delivery of the jack by the first player in that end).

Good news for bowlers

August 5, 2008
Some excellent news for bowlers is the radio bowls show will be back on air this year. The Program was cancelled halfway thru last season when Western Sports Media lost the right even after 16,000 people had signed a petition to remain on air.
Mike Zusman who has done an excellent job hosting the program since 1998 will continue on with the show.
One of Lawn Bowls biggest fans and a man who has done much to promote the sport Colin Minson has persevered to get his great sporting programs back on air and now he can do this on 91.3 FM.
Colin has already interviewed Mike twice on the radio bringing news and an updates of what is happening on the bowls scene
We will try to get times and dates as to to let our visitors know when Mike will be on air during the off season

June 25, 2008
Osborne Park greenkeeper Richard Cox is pulling up stumps and returning to his home State of N.S.W to live.
This is a huge loss to the Osborne Park Bowling Club.
Richard was the ultimate clubman and very popular with all at Osborne Park, if all clubs had the likes of a Richard Cox they would well ahead of the game.
It goes without saying that Richard was at the top of the hill with the greens he presented for bowlers to play on which made it so pleasurable to play the game we all love
We wish you the very best for the future Richard and hope that you might return sometime in the future..

Cant they read a radar picture?

Congrats to Leeming, they benefitted from this decision and I wish them well next year (and even though had we played they still may have won) but I am disappointed it wasnt left to our bowls deciding the result.
Shame we use international rules for length but not for playing in the rain... or at least waiting until game start time...

ANNOUNCEMENT

March 17, 2008
A week ago Sherro made a request to BowlsWA for financial assistance to help run this website. It was a very small sum of money that was asked for
We have received word from BowlsWA that The Bowls WA Executive has considered the issue of this website and decided not to provide financial support
.
BowlWA outlined their reasons for refusal which I found a little disappointing considering what the site does do for the game.
However we remain on good terms regardless of the decision and both of us have games interest at heart.

March 15, 2008

Sherro would like top thank the many people who have contacted me regarding the closure of this site.
I have been overwhelmed with the support that has been offered, contacts to me have been over 300 people.
My only approach to anyone has been to BowlsWA.
This site will remain open for the time being.

LETTER to the WEBMASTER

Sherro, I was shocked when I heard that your great web site - Bedfordbc - will be closing on March 15, but I also understand the time, effort and commitment that it takes to keep a web site updated and topical and you certainly have given your all to create and maintain a great site.

Bowls in general is certainly lacking in promotion and marketing but I do commend and thank you Sheero for the very large part you play in promoting Bowls in Western Australia.

The State of WA and Bowls in Australia will be poorer for your web site closing down but in years to come, you yourself will be remembered as a pioneer in the formative years of information technology and bowls promotion in this country.

Keep safe and well

February 5, 2008
I have recieved several calls and a few emails regarding the Jack throwing incident that took place in the game between Victoria Park and Wanneroo.
There are differing versions of what occured. I am in no position to know what is the correct version

The obvious thing is that a player just doesn't throw a jack without some reason.

There was a major incident in this game when Wanneroo player Russell Bates threw the kitty a bit long, 2 greens & several rose gardens.
Rusty then picked his bowls up, walked off the green and caught a taxi home. This left the Wanneroo team one player short for the remainder of the game.

This was a costly action for the Wanneroo Express who were in desperate need of a win.
What the consequences of Rusty Bates action will be is undetermined at this stage.
