The State selectors are close to announcing the State side to go to Canberra to play in the Interstate Sides series.
How will the selectors choose this team ? Will they stick with the proven players, will they rely on squad trials to determine selection, and will they take pennant form into account.
Players who have put their hand up in major events should get recognition. Some of the current state players havent done much or anything. My stance is to reward performance.
If they take pennant form onto account a few of the players would not be selected. Pennant form should be taken into account
after all these games are played fair dinkum.
Players who on performance I have witnessed would not be out of place in the State side are Bill Galloway who is probably the best second in W.A
Pat Caffell playing as a third has been in a winning side 27 out of the last 31 games and those who saw his stunning performance in the semi-final of the State Fours could ask the same quesion.
Why is this type of performance not rewarded. Age should not be a yardstick, if you are old enough and have the ability then you are good enough.
While we have to encourage the younger players we should not overlook older players who are clearly better than some of the younger players.
One thing is very clear to me after watching Premier League pennants is there is a very fine line between many of those in the squad and those not in it.
There should be three certainties about this side and that is John Goddard to become a State skip and after seeing John in action on many occasions this season one might wonder how it is, that he has been overlooked in this role in previous seasons.
John was selected to play as a lead last year while lesser players were given roles as thirds and seconds. A re think by the selectors saw him back playing third.
David Rankin has shown beyond doubt his ability is well worthy of selection and he must have been extremely unlucky to not have made the side to play at Osborne Park last April. In hindsight I am sure the selectors would have included him
Gary Carberry has shown he has the goods to be a success in any role they select him top play. The current Champion of Club Champion Championship singles winner also showed outstanding qualities as a skipper in
recent State Fours when his side was runner up.
For starters that will take care of the loss of Jon Sharp who was outstanding and won the Alan Eddy Medal for the best W.A player of the series.
The other player who was unavailable for selection with his move to Albany was Bruce Urquhart. Bruce has since had a change of circumstances and has been available for selection for the past 6 weeks but overlooked.
So with a new State selection panel I guess that will bring a different view of how the new team will take shape and who will be on the plane to Canberra.
Will there be changes to the side, who deserves to come into the side and who will be left out?
Thomas Mitchell won the Mt Lawley consistency with a brilliant performance, He was outstanding in the semi-final of the State Fours, there was not much more he could have done for his side that lost the game.
The Jones boy who was the runner up tho he played poorly in the final it was the quality of the players he beat on his way thru the event to make the final.
Daniel Brown was the runner up in the Sorrento Master Singles and that could be taken into account.
The quality of play by Matt Elull and Scott Edmonds in the State side series demands they be included in this team.
We do want the best players to represent W.A and we want form players, these two players have earned it the hard way. There were many state players not at the business end of the series to display their wares.
Will Cameron Tunstall who has been elevated to the Silver Tier of the Australian Bowl squad get a shirt? Should he get a shirt! not for me. The best players should be selected.
players should not be selected on potential alone, Cameron still has a bit of work to do but it would seem he will play for W.A sometime soon.
The reality is you should have to earn your stripes.
Daniel Patterson is another who has done well played as lead in the winning State Fours of 2008 and he produced a match winning performance
Pieter Harris has been the standout skipper for W.A over the last 5 seasons for the first time fell below the halfway mark at Osborne Park with 3 wins 4 losses. He is an automatic inclusion as skip
Russell Hughes was in charge of the best performed rink at OP with 5 wins 2 losses. Russell is a big game performer and that showed out at OP.
John Sharp won the Alan Eddy medal and his rink won 4 games lost 2 and drew one.
Daniel Trewhella was skipper for the first time and his rink came home with 3 wins and 4 losses. Daniel was the most attacking skipper in the Sides series and this may well count against him at the selection table.
The Bowls Australia selectors have a high regard for Trystan Smallacombe by selecting him in the
Silver tier squad recently which means they have a higher opinion of Trystan than Daniel.
I also have a high regard for Trystan's ability and after seeing him perform at the Osborne Park series and his win in the just completed State Triples it underlined his value to this side and he should be a skipper.
There is not much more that John Goddard can do to deserve the opportunity to skipper and we wish him well in his new role
