TUGGERNERONG VALLEY------- AUSTRALIAN CAPITOL TERRITORY
March 23, 2009
W.A went to Tuggeranong with some expectation of performing well, our poll indicated the team would finish 4th.
There were many changes to the side that had done a good job in the previous series at Osborne Park.
In all morning games the conditions were perfect for bowling, there was never any breeze. All the players from each State had to do was concentrate on getting their weight right, finding the line was the easy part
.
All afternoon games were played in windy conditions and they usually died down 3/4 of the way through each afternoon game.
The series started off with W.A playing Queensland, that was a daunting prospect considering Qld were the titleholders and appeared to be an even stronger side than the 2008 side.
W.A certainly had their chances to beat Queensland when they led by 10/12 shots at the 50th end of the 84 that were played but were run over.
In the afternoon game against Tasmania W.A held a good 15 shot lead at more than the halfway mark only to be run over the top of yet again and lost by 1 shot.
The Tuesday morning game saw W.A really cop it from the Vic's and how good the Victorians were! Generally W.A were simply out bowled
by a very skilful side. John Goddard's rink suffered their first and only loss for the series
Going into the fourth game of the series, the Tuesday afternoon game saw W.A defeat S.A easily to record their first win, it was the Trystan Smallacombe's led rink first win in the series.
Wednesday morning saw N.S.W defeat W.A with the W.A boys winning on two rinks and another good win for Trystan Smallacombe and John Goddard. A very good effort from both of these rinks
Wednesday afternoon W.A had their second win in the series when they defeated A.C.T quite comfortably with standout rink in this contest of Pieter Harris's players playing brilliantly
The last day saw W.A scrape across the line against the winless N.T. There was one change and that was Clive Adams to play skip in place of Pieter Harris who played in the seconds position.
Well the NT did a very good job to push W.A all the way and win on two rinks and draw on another. Clive Adams skippering a rink for the first time at this level saved W.A from embarrassment with a huge 32/9 win.
It has happened in the past that NT has beaten W.A in the sides series.
There were complaints that the green were to slow, and that was why W.A played so many short bowls in the series. It was also slow for Qld,Victoria and N.S.W but their players wrapped their heads around what they had to play on and adjusted to the conditions as did some WA players.
This series saw the retirement of Pieter Harris who had decided before the series this would be his last for a while.
Pieter had been W.A's best skip over the past 5 years bar one. He finished with only one win as a skip for this series.
John Goddard's rink made all the adjustments needed to go through the series losing only one game to be easily the best best performed rink for W.A
Next best was Trystan Smallacombe's rink who started out badly losing their first three games and won their next three, then a loss to the NT made it 3 wins 4 losses.
Russell Hughes came home with his worst figures since he was made a skipper winning 2 games and a draw from 7.
It was agreed by the broadcast team the best player for W.A was Thomas Mitchell who gave a strong and consistent performance, he quickly adjusted to the speed of the greens and was consistently around the jack with both bowls, playing his part that saw John Goddard's rink lose only one game throughout the series
The future looks very bright for this young man.
The other new player 17 year old Cameron Tunstall played a blinder in his first game for W.A, he couldn't sustain that effort for the rest of the series. However Cameron will never forget that brilliant performance
