Wings Evans, best player in the final takes a breather in the State Pairs final at Osborne Park
............
Osborne Park pair of Wings Evans and Rob Lawrence won the State Pairs title today defeating last years runners up Victoria Park's Anthony Provost and Graeme Wishart. 23-10...
Who would win this game was the big question, both sides have contrasting styles of play. AP and Rooster never afraid to use the big drive came out with all guns blazing to race to a 6-0 lead using a mixture of the draw drive game.
Wings and Robo Lawrence were playing conservatively and stuck with that style of game when suddenly there were a couple of missed drives on the 5th end by Rooster and AP to see the score 3-6 down for Wings and Robbie, then followed a 1 and a huge 5 for Wings and Robbie to see them lead 9-6 after another missed running shot from AP, from that point of the game Wings and Robbie were never headed for the rest of the match.
It was obvious that Wings Evans was sticking to the tried tested old fashioned game of draw for dough as the saying goes while the Anthony Provost game had a mixture of draw and drive for show about it. It certainly paid off at times with Rooster driving from the leaders position against some of the pinpoint leading of Rob Lawrence and doing it with good effect.
All players were going well with Robo Lawrence and Rooster having a ding dong battle with plenty of quality bowls being played by both players and hard going, it seemd that Rob Lawrence was on top but not much in it
There was a big difference between Wings and AP in the way they went about their business both were doing great things with AP playing a more varied game to try to bring victory to their side. It started to emerge that Wings Evans with his draw shot game and the bit over the draw when required was the more telling of the contrasting styles displayed by both skippers.
The score was 12-10 in favour of Wings and Robo at the conclusion of the 13th end which in the scheme of things was a critical end because for one of the rare times in this game Wings was under the pump and at least 4/5/6 down and having to play the last bowl of the end he played a corker to hit the head perfectly on a hand hehad rarely had played to cut it down to 1
That was the end of the game tho we were not to know that with 6 ends to play because AP and Rooster were to not score again for the remainder of the match
Wings and Robo waltzed away with the game, the score at the end was 23-10, perhaps waltzed away is not fair because the winners still had to fight hard to come out on top.
How did they go
Rooster did a lot of good things with his driving and his draw game which was good and a great effort to once again play in the final of the State Pairs
Robbie Lawrence played a mighty fine leaders game and also very solid playing his second set of bowls in each of the ends. I felt he shaded Rooster on the draw in a hard fought battle.
AP was always dangerous no matter what the position and no matter what shot he played, there was always the possibility of something happening for his side
Wings played a bomb of a game and was clearly the best player of the four in this game to show that the draw game and the bit over is still king if you have the skill to play it..
It was a great game of bowls that held the attention of all who were in attendance. The skill level was right up there with all players doing many good things thru the game .
