Today's results are below

January 29, 2008
-----------
The State Singles was won by a brilliant John Goddard who was in fine touch to win the Singles final against Trystan Smallacombe who was in great form also, the scores do not reflect just how good this game was. This is John Goddard's second State Singles win, the other was in 2002

The game was a beauty with both players drawing very close but it was in the first four ends that were to eventually decide who would win this game.
End 1 saw John Goddard pick up 2 shots
End 2 saw John make three after being 1 down
End 3 saw John convert a 4 down to a 1 up with a brilliant drive
End 4 a draw shot for John making him 10 - 0

Trystan finaly scored picking up three great shots and now it is 10 - 3

Trystan Smallacombe
Up to this stage of the game Trystan Smallacombe played fantasically well but simpley could not hold his counters, and had a big task ahead of him.
Trystan kept plugging away but we saw John Scoot out to lead 16 - 3 again it was John who converted twice in this period and also drew 3 rippers on one of these ends.
It seems that we are looking more at Trystans game in this commentary so I must add that John Goddard was playing fantastic to be leading 16 - 5
Things were going from bad to worse on the scoreboard as far as Trystan was concerned when he played his one bad end for the entire game going down 4 shots and they were all bad bowls with 1 maybe 2 wind affected, the score was now 20 - 5

Trystan Smallacombe (pictured)

John Goddard was playing an irrisitable brand of bowls that actually helped Trystan because it forced him into more shot play and slowly but surely Trystan started to creep back into the game to be 24 - 13 down and from there, more great shot play saw him get to be 19 - 24 down and still an outside chance however it was John who held firm to win a tremendous game of lawn bowls and John Goddard was sooooooooooo goooooooooooooood in this game and is a great 2008 Singles champ

Trystan Smallacombe played a magificent game but overall was beaten by Johns converstions when he was down

John showed all round skills as did Trystan in their battle today and it is easy to see why these two players are in the State side

.

The semi- final between John Goddard and Clive Adams was a rip snorter of a game with the heads so packed on occasions it well worth watching these great players going head to head. The driving was so accurate with both bowlers resorting to this tactic often.

Perhaps it was John who had the most luck when driving with the result almost always going his way. John was drawing so well and so was the Wanneroo Wizard and it was as good a game as you would see and a little more exciting because of the skill of both players.

After the game I spoke with the Wizard and he said he was happy with his own game but also gave a lot of credit to John Goddard for the game he played to win his way to the final.

-----------------------------L/R:Clive Adams and James Jaworski

------------------------Clive Adams and James Jaworski

The game between Trystan Smallacombe and James Jaworski was a bit of an anti-climax. After brilliant displays on the way thru to the semi-final by James this match was going to be the game to beat all games but it never eventuated.

James got away to a bad start and it is not often that we would see a player drive with all four bowls on the first end of any game, James never collected the money once and went down 4. The feeling among the spectators was that James never settled after that first end.
The score was 10/6 in favour of Trystan and he was generally in charge and mainly played a draw game because that is all he had to do and played only one into the head shot which was terrific and successful. James lost his line when playing to convert and his draw power was down from the previous games, this was not the James Jaworski that had played so brilliantly in his games leading up to this game. The game ended with Trystan in complete control
James can take plenty out of this game and is sure to be a contender next season when the State Singles is played
