ROSENTHAL MEDAL COUNT BURSWOOD CONVENTION CENTRE

April 30, 2011
The most prestigious award in WA bowls, the Rosenthal Medal, is in the spotlight once again.........
The Rosenthal Medal is awarded to the player adjudged to be the best-performed in State championships and other major events over the previous twelve months...
Will the points allotted to the players once again will be shrouded in secrecy. ...
The winner will be announced at the BowlsWA awards night, the individual points gained have in the past not been available to the general bowling fraternity.
Why must there be a veil of secrecy over how the winner of WA’s most prestigious medal is decided? I am unaware of this occurring in other sports, where the points of winners of “best player” awards are not published.
In the past there may have been a perception amongst bowlers that the points tally has been manipulated. If the ‘formula’ was published it would remove that suspicion.
The Lindsay Rosenthal Medallists’ Association has approached previous BowlsWA boards on a number of occasions to have the points awarded for major events made public … these requests have been consistently refused.
The LRMA requests were not being bloody-minded, rather an attempt to create media opportunities to promote the Rosenthal Medal, and create interest in upcoming events carrying medal points, and which players were best placed to win.
In the best interests of the sport and what the medal stands for, we don’t want to see the Rosenthal Medal degraded by the percption of the possible manipulation.
The ‘formula’ needs to be transparent....
We have seen some tight finishes in recent years; in 2008 John Goddard won the Medal from Clive Adams and James Jaworski. More than anyone else I am sure that Clive Adams and James Jaworski would have liked to know how close the result was as would the bowling fraternity...
In 2009 Scott Edmonds won from John Goddard in another tight finish… once again no points were published.
I must add that we are not saying that John and Scott were not the correct winners on whatever points formula was used, but for what valid reason were the points for all players not disclosed?
I urge the new BowlsWA board to take a look at the successful and quite transparent Tasmanian model, and use a similar method to determine future winners.
I also urge the new BowlsWA board to publish all points for this season’s Rosenthal Medal count. I’m certain the bowling fraternity would welcome the points tally for the award to be revealed.

Rosenthal Medal winners John Goddard, Clive Adams, Scott Edmonds...

Geoff Oakley one of the all time greats of the game here in West Australia, has won the Rosenthal Medal on three occasions. The first of the Medal wins was in 1975 and to think 18 years later the 'Doc' won it for the 3rd time which demonstrates how good and consistent a player he has been over such a length of time. The 'Doc' also represented Australia in the Commonwealth games in 1978 and on other occasions also

Dennis 'the kat' Katunarich 1985 - 86 - 89

Dennis Katunarich another all time great had a golden decade in the 80's winning the Medal on three occasions. Regarded by many as the best drawshot the game has seen. The 'Kat', who represented Australia on 259 occasions retired this year after a 25 year association with the Doubleview Bowling Club

Anthony Provost has won the Rosenthal Medal on two occasions and in the firing line to win his 3rd this year.
