ROUND SIXTEEN

Round sixteen will almost determine who the final four could be. Clubs need to get as many points as possible in their wins because it could come down to just a point or two whether or not a club makes the finals or not. What we have is 5 clubs vying for 3 places.

A loss for either Sth Perth or Cambridge will end their hopes for a spot in the finals
Wanneroo have to win against Cockburn who will not be a part of the finals this season, the second year in a row for this most famous of clubs.

Vic Park have to win however a loss will keep them in the hunt while Kalamunda know what is at stake regarding demotion.

Yokine have to win or at least take a couple of points out of their game, they have a hard task on their hands against the league leaders the Osborne Park Saints who could lose all their games and still remain on top of the ladder at the conclusion of the home and away season

This is as exciting a round as you would get in the season.
Saturday night will provide many of the answers

Paul Pendergast has been a valuable player this season for the Saints filling in as a lead, second and third and doing a great job of it. Paul is now part of the leading rink in the Premier League playing as a two for David Rankin.

What a weekend for these two clubs, Cockburn had an opportunity to push for a finals berth and Wanneroo played for second spot. Did they achieve their obvious goals over the weekend.......NO!

Cockburn had the difficult task of trying to beat both Doubleview and Cambridge and came up short collecting two points in both games. It would be a brave soul that would suggest that Cockburn can now make the finals. More likely they can shape the final four as two of their remaining games are against Wanneroo and Vic Park, two teams in the four.

And what about Wanneroo, seven and a half points against Kalamunda on Saturday set up the opportunity to grab second spot on the ladder with a win against Yokine on Sunday. Well Sunday came and went as did second spot with Wanneroo only managing to secure one point.

Yokine were good and came play, Wanneroo were ordinary with the exception of the Adams rink. Too much left to too few was the word from an inside source. (Inept was the actual word used to describe the performance).

In the first round Cockburn traveled to Wanneroo and came away with all eight points. This time Wanneroo has to contend with the very difficult wind-swept greens of Cockburn. Will history repeat itself?

Simon Alden has played as a two and a three this season and will be hoping for better things for the Express down at Cockburn this weekend
--Simon Alden

Some clues to the outcome of this game might be found in the weekend’s results. Cockburn’s best performed rink that of Gary Carberry’s had two rink wins for plus 4 shots. Daniel Brown also won two for plus 17. Steve Srhoy had two losses for minus 17 and Mike Zusman had a very difficult weekend with two losses and minus 35.

Wanneroo on the other hand had the Adams rink win two for plus 15, Humphryson won one and drew one for plus 19, Davies won one and lost one for minus 13 and Alden drew one and lost one for minus 5.

With four rink wins each Wanneroo has their nose in front courtesy of two drawn rinks, is this enough to suggest they can beat Cockburn at home, I think not. Even though second place on the ladder is on the line again, their performance against Yokine at home suggests they are not up to the challenge.

What is going on at Yokine? two wins from their last three games and look at the opposition they have played in those wins, Sth Perth Millers who are want to be Premiers and Wanneroo Express who have an eye for the finals.
Winning these games is making a statement of the biggest kind.

Even more impressive is the fact they didn't have either Rod Heaton or Jamie O`Keefe in the side that played Wanneroo at Wanneroo on sunday

It is now possible for the Doggies to stay in the Premier League and who would have thought this was possible 5 weeks ago, it would be a shame to see this latest effort not rewarded.
The extra good part of these latest wins for the Doggies is they are playing a vital role as to what clubs will be in or out of the finals and that keeps the pressure on and the competition interesting.

Can they win this week ?

Sorry to say but I don't think so even tho they were outstanding in their first round game against the Saints losing by one shot on the last bowl of the game.

Osborne Park Saints only have to keep doing what they have been doing all season.
They have the two best rinks in the Premier League, those of David Rankin and John Goddard and both were very good last week.

Gary Caffell's rink were disappointing last week after leading 12/7 and went down 15/23 on their own green.
Over the season Gary Caffell's rink have a 7/7/1 + 2
which shows the rink is vulnerable and one that could be beaten in this game

Kevin Pickering's rink have won 6 from their last 8 games, those 2 losses were small, 5 shots over those 2 game losses.

The Saints would not under rate the Doggies and think it is an easy game, we would have to say their consistent form over the season will get them the points

The Jones Boy (sk), A. Heal,B. Katunarich, Pappy
P. Harris (sk), S. Rushforth, W. Maher , Leahy
D. Opie (sk),M. McGann,T. Walsh, G. Kane

Both sides can make the finals but they have to win this game. Only one will !
Sth Perth's loss against the Doggies was costly, the loss against Osborne Park Saints was expected and they did a good job in that game considering how fast the green was running.

The Millers have 70 points on the ladder and have already played game 17, it is goodbye finals for the Millers who have tailed off toward the end of the season. However if they can beat Cambridge at home, (they beat them at home last season) and get 8 points and follow up against Wanneroo with another 8 pointer they will be in the mix and still might not make it.

Cambridge need all the points, a loss and it is a case of turn out the lights the party is over.

Where can the game be won, Sth Perth are not consistent enough of late, Nick Reagan's rink copped a beauty against the Saints, 6 wins for the season and a - 40. Scott Walkers rink haven't won enough games but they did a great job against OP winning against Kevin Pickering.
Ross Bresland's rink deserve a lot of credit to come from behind 7/12 on a lightning fast track to get Gary Caffell's rink
Matt Ellul and his rink were in the game till near the end but dropped a 7, it was poor timing to drop a 7 at that stage of the game.
However this rink is a great rink and what a great season they have had. Without the contribution for this rink Sth Perth would have been finished long ago.

What can Cambridge do from here, one mistake and they are gone gone gone.
Last sunday's 14th game was a good win for the Knights .
How and where can they get a win, Peter Harris's rink have led the way for the Knights but were surprise losers against Cockburn..

David Opie apparently had a huge game aginst Mike Zusman where his game was described as awesome, this coming after an unexpected loss the day before against Dalkeith's Tony Skoric.
The Jones Boy had a huge win against Steve "Slammer" Srhoy and knows how to play the carpet in this coming game.
Trystan Smallacome lost a close game to Gary Carberry
With so much at stake and goodbye season 2008/9 for the loser

D/KEITH SILVERTAIS v D/VIEW POWERHOUSE

R. Ball (sk), L. Thorn, M.Mitchell, K. Screech
D.Katunarich (sk) A. Delaporte,R. Barns ,G. Nelson

The PowerHouse are on a roll and it appears they are not going to stop till they are top, top, top.

6 wins on the trot have bought the club to the brink when it appeared earlier they had fallen off the wagon.
They will need to win this game, they have already played their 17th game leaving the last game only to be played which is against Osborne Park.

In their first round meeting with the Silvertails the Powerhouse won by 6 shots and lost on two rinks.

Last weekend saw the Powerhouse win three games taking Sth Perth, a finals contender, to the cleaners following up to beat Vic Park Reds by 5 shots and that was courtesy of Robbie Ball's last bowl to turn a 2 up to 6 up.
Then for good measure they beat hoodoo side Cockburn Roosters 6-2
It is ominous that Dennis Kat won all three games last weekend and once again demonstrated what his presence means to the PowerHouse.
Daniel Trewhella and his rink lost one game of the 3 played will also be a big player in this most important of games.
John Slavich's rink are not winning games, the last four have been hard fought and while it is important when losing to keep it tight, it is time now to get the points in the next two games they have won just a half a point in their last three outings ,
John's rink was beaten by 17- 23 in the first round by Luke Richardson.

Dalkeith have been going well of late pushing OP all the way on three rinks at Dalkeith.
Dalkeith can be proud of their finish to the season and what a season by Mark Krajancic who has by all reports been the best player including the opposition in most of the games he has played this season.
Tony Skoric and his rink made a remarkable turn around from their 6-47 drubbing to win against David Opie's rink and they will look to continue that good form
Doubleview need every point in this game and we can expect the Silvertails who have been very competion will be looking to make a difference to the make up of the fiinal four and make the PowerHouse earn this win

A. Provost(sk), S. Bainbridge, G. Quann, C. Hayes

The heat is on for Kalamunda who are now definitely in the demotion zone. Every point will be valuable for them, the way Yokine are traveling they might get a couple of points against OP bearing in mind the Doggies lost on the last bowl of the day against OP in the first round.

The loss against Wanneroo coming home with only half a point was disappointing and to find what Yokine had achieved would have been a downer for the Tigers.

The Tigers did well to take two points from the Reds in their first round game game at Vic Park.
How can the Tigers win this game and remembering that they have a dismal home ground record this season.
The Tigers will neeeeeeed everyone on board for this game. Last week Billy Brandsma and Mitch Biglin led rinks went pretty good, Neale Griffin;s rink went down by 6 and the side who has led from the front, Neil Payne's rink got swallowed up to go down by 20 shots which was the difference of winning and losing.
The hot and cold Tigers always seem to find a way to lose game via one rink getting smashed.

Vic Park have shown they are by no means unbeatable and haven't been coming home with the big end of the points as often as their ability would suggest they should have.
However it is impossible to think they could lose this game and all they need to do to confirm their booking for a finals place and preferably second place is to win.
How can they win the game. Anthony Provost's rink went down to a Robbie Ball, ball tearer on the last bowl of that game and will be too strong for whatever rink he plays.

Rhett Butlers rink lost by 3 to Daniel Trewhella and only has to play to their ability top win against any Tiger rink they meet.

Jeff Mitchell is the quite achiever come up with another win to beat John Slavich by 7.
Soooooooo if the Reds play to their ability they must surely win.
