ROUND FIVE

The field is tightly packed coming into the 5th round of pennants. It is great to see for the competition's sake.

It is how we would like it to be seeing the majority of teams fighting it out to make the four, the exceptions being Kalamunda Tigers, the Cockburn Roosters and Dalkeith Silvertails.

Unfortunately results this weekend could see two more sides fall by the wayside even at this early stage, victory is vital for the Cockburn Roosters and the Yokine Doggies

There are two games of the round in round 5, they will be between the Wanneroo Express v Victoria Park Reds.
Neither played last week to be able to gauge their form.

The other game of the round is between the Sth Perth Millers who have been going about their business nice quietly and are in the box seat playing at home to the Yokine Doggies who are keen to move up the ladder.

Cambridge have hit top form, they have what appears to be an easy game against the out of form struggling Cockburn Roosters 16

Osborne Park Saints have hit their straps and are looking good, take on the Dalkeith Silvertails who are having a go and maybe a win is not too far away for the Silvertails

Doubleview PowerHouse should not have too many worries playing against the Kalamunda Tigers on Doubleview grass

Adrian Durrant has the power and balance here, is on one leg as he lets go this brilliant drive straight down the line
Adrian Durrant
Almost copy book delivery to get this drive away by Yokine Doggie Adrian Durrant who plays two for the well performed Jamie O`Keefe rink.

This game is over before it has started if we take notice of the Tigers form compared to the Doubleview PowerHouse in the first four games.

The Tigers are down at the bottom of the ladder and not a lot of prospect to starting an upward trend.
Major problem is their four rinks cannot seem to fire at the same time in a game yet we see they have more rink wins than League leaders Wanneroo

Perfect example was that of Billy Brandsma's rink last week, his rink have taken the rink of Trystan Smallacombe out of the equation and that is a tall order for most sides to be able to do. Then we see the rink of Neale Griffin who were outstanding against Garry Caffell at Ossy Park leading Pieter Harris14 - 4 and lose 21 - 15.

The pressure is mounting on Neil Payne's rink to be able to get the point on a saturday while Mitch Biglin has not quite full filled the promise he had shown a couple of years back. Still it is early days at this stage of the season for him and we will wait and see what eventuates from here.

The Powerhouse are losing players at faster rate than an Adrian Durrant drive and it could start to tell on the club. But for now they hold too many aces in the pack for the Tigers.
Daniel Trewhella's rink remain unbeaten and they won't lose here. John Slavich's rink are running at 2 wins 1 loss and we see he has Brother Charlie playing three and that will command attention to see how it works out.
Pat 'BullsEye" Buller has been in pretty good touch in local events but as we know, Pennants is a different kettle of fish.
Kyle McIlroy has a 1 win 2 loss record so far and will be keen to see that reversed

Osborne Park have made no changes to the side that crushed Cockburn. Paul Pendergast and Dave Appleton did not regain their position in the side after missing last week and both will play in One White this week.

Colin Fleay was the replacement for Paul Pendergast last week playing his first game for the Saints has apparently played a beauty and kept his place while Richard Cox replaced Dave Appleton did enough to also retain his place

Richard Cox played his first game in Premier League against Cockburn last week playing lead
----------Richard Cox

There would be some concern for Gary Caffell's "G" team who have yet to get the stats man to use the blue pen. On a light hearted note there is a suggestion at Osborne Park the team should be renamed the "dream" team until they awake from their slumber.

Other than that Kevin Pickering has hit his straps and performing well in his debut season as a Premier League skip.

John Goddard's rink have swept all before them and I think John's form and performances this season combined with last season, almost demands that he is selected to fill the vacant State Skippers spot that is available for the next Interstate sides series.

One of Australia's best green keepers Richard Cox, made his debut playing in the Premier League against Cockburn last week has retained his place in the 16 after replacing Dave Appleton who was not selected in the One White side after being unavailable last week

The Silvertails lost last week against the Sth Perth Millers it was encouraging to see they were once again very competitive which is a good sign for them and they know what has to be done if they are to be a force for the rest of the season.

Three rinks here spell danger to Osborne Park and they are the rink of Marko Krajancic, he has his boys fired up and ready for action and a quick look at his record this season says whoever they play will be in for a hard time.

Luke Richardson has two wins from his first two games as a skip which is a great start for any new skip will find the temperature rising a lot higher this week if the weather allows the grass to be at its best at Ossy Park

Tony Skoric led rinks have done everything but win and we see his highest losing margin is 5 shots and the overall aggregate loss is - 11 shots from 4 games could also be one to to watch out for.

Sth PERTH MILLERS v YOKINE DOGGIES

Sth Perth have been good so far and would hold the whip hand playing on their carpet where they are hard to beat.
Yokine have a very good carpet as well and I would imagine they have put some time in on it this week.

The Millers who are in second place on the ladder have so far played sides not in the four and this 5th game into the first round we see Yokine are also not in four.
Like other clubs the Millers have been running on three cylinders and would like to see the fourth cylinder start to win games.

In an endeavour to remedy the situation the Millers have moved Ken Pride from Steve Lunn's rink into Nick Reagan's rink to play three while Scott Walker has dropped down to play two for new skip Steve Lunn.

Greg Reagan has moved from 2 to play three for Steve Lunn and the word we heard was Greg played an absolute blinder for the first 10 ends last week against Marko Krajancic

Scott Hamilton has been promoted to play his first game of Premier League and he will be in Nick Reagan's rink.

These are all good moves and the best time to be doing it early in the season and while the club occupies second place on the ladder.

The Yokine Doggies would feel some angst about not having played Wanneroo last week at home where they would have felt they had a big chance to win, have a difficult challenge ahead of them.

As we have often said, many a team has come and gone from Sth Perth empty handed and I think that is what will happen here. It is a whole new ball game playing on the Sth Perth carpet.

Having said that the Doggies have been very competitive and if they can grab the feel of the carpet quickly, well who knows!

Yokine deserve respect for their season so far but a loss will put them on the back foot from which they may not recover. The competition for a place in the four is intense.

Yokine will be looking for Rod Heaton's rink to get over the hump and start to bother the man with the blue pen while we can expect the rinks of Jamie O`Keefe (Jamie has been added to the State squad), Scott Edmonds and Eddy Dodd rinks who are up and about and busy will be having a red hot go as they have done so far this season

CAMBRIDGE KNIGHTS v COCKBURN ROOSTERS

Cambridge have moved into a another gear and are now playing to their true ability have had the wood over Cockburn in the past two games.

I had made comment at the start of the season that It seemed a strange situation for Cambridge to have the winner of last season's best player award Aj Heal selected to be playing as a second when he had played most of last season as a third.

The change was made against Kalamunda and Tony Walsh went from 3 to 2. The rink who have now won 3 from 4 games while the other 3 to 2 change on David Opie's rink had immediate success.

Pieter Harris and his rink seem to be heading in the right direction after another brilliant come from behind win at Kalamunda last week

Cockburn sprung a surprise by naming Matt Kurta who earlier in the year was reported to be taking a year off from the game due to work commitments. He would be a more then welcome addition to the Roosters ranks.

While it a good thing to happen for the both Cockburn and Matt who showed he has plenty of ability, will he be able to deliver the goods in his first game for the year?

We did see Matt Play in the corresponding game against Cambridge last season and his performance was brilliant having a huge win over Ron Stockton.

The Premier League 16 have been struggling and is a far cry from what it used to be in player strength of years past.
There have been plenty of changes to the rinks in an endeavour to get things moving in the right direction
Another to be given a game was leader Steve West who also played a blinder against Cambridge last season.
Steve Srhoy has changed his third John Trewhella who will play as a 2 for Gary Carberry and Gary Catterick who lost his skippers role will be the new three for Steve Srhoy

WANNEROO EXPRESS v VIC PARK REDS

A difficult game to predict the winner, on paper Vic Park have more big name players than Wanneroo and also have three players who would not be out of place if they were selected to skipper a rink in this 16.

But as we all know it is not what your name is but where your bowl lands on a saturday afternoon and on that basis the Reds haven't been landing their bowls where they need to be, as we found out when they played the Knights at Cambridge.

Wanneroo have been very good at home and they have fewer big names in their 16 but have been impressive playing on Wanneroo grass where so far they remain undefeated.

The Express however will need all hands on deck if they are to succeed in this game and their two games played at home so far have shown they will be a handful at Wanneroo.

Victoria Park also need to regroup after the Cambridge debacle and I feel certain they will turn on all four engines in this game.

Nothing much has changed from last week's write up except that Wanneroo are at home and Vic Park are away.
