March 15, 2008
A cracker of a round and the biggest upset was that of Cockburn who defeated the Doubleview PowerHouse who just might be in danger of a shutdown/ meltdown due to the heat of the competition

Victoria Park Reds hold tight in one of the great games of the season against the Cambridge Knights. While the Knights were brave and bold, to have lost this game could cost them dearly as they now have to take on an in form Osborne Park Saints side tomorrow.

A huge blunder by leader Ross Bolton to let Russell Hughes have last bowl laid the foundations for a Victoria Park victory.
It is hard to understand why after leading 15/1 with your skipper on fire you would do what you did Ross. To me there can be no excuse for your decision and I would take disiplinary action

Sth Perth Millers keep the Bedford Bulls at bay to show once again they are a formidable force playingg at home.

Wanneroo Express say goodbye to Melville and send them packing to One White in a one sided contest that meant so much to Melville

The Osborne Park Saints journey to the top of the world in search of big points and don't disappoint with an overwhelming victory against Kalamunda.

VICTORIA PARK REDS 72 (5) def CAMBRIDGE KNIGHTS 71 ( 3)
Cambridge and the Victoria Park Reds had a lot at stake in this game saw the Reds carve out a win against the Knights who won on three rinks,
When Sherro got to the ground it was very noticable that the Reds were pumped up for this game, they had plenty of voice and encouragement for their team mates. Must say their atmosphere was really something and I am certain all their players fed of this. The Reds play one for all and all for one. After their win they gathered in a circle and celebrated their victory. If you could win a premiership on the sort of comeraderie the Reds displayed on the field today they will bolt it in to win the premiership on that score, But as we know that alone will not get the job done.

Cambridge also came to play and can take some joy because they won on three rinks in a high standard contest. Three points is not a bad result but the consequences of the loss are compounded by the PowerHouse losing to Cockburn meaning the chances of the all important semi-finals that could have been played at Cambridge may have evaporated.
If all games were as good as this contest then the competition would be in a good state.
Sherro decided to not mark any game so he could soak it all in. What a great draw seeing Trystan Smallacombe versus Rooster Wishart, The Jones Boy versus Russell Hughes, Ron Stockton versus Jeff Mitchell and the King of Swing versus Brian Katunarich. You could not wish for a better draw.

G. Wishart(sk), T. Mitchell, D. Florence, G. Hiskens -------.---18
T.Smallacombe (sk) N. Lewis,W. Maher, B. Kiely ------------.--19
This was a ripper of a game and while I couldn't watch it all the time the players to standout were Rooster and Trystan Smallacombe. Rooster was burning with pinpoint bowls and making life difficult for Trystan but he responded magnificently with his own special display.
It is not fair to just mention these two players but that was what I managed to see. Tom Mitchell had a good game and was never far away from where he was meant to be with his bowls. I spoke with Brian Kiely after the game and he said it was hard to select the best players because every player put in to make this the great game it was, but did say Wayne "Jubes" Maher did some great things at critical times.
Our score card showed that Rooster led 8/1 after end 6 --11/7 at end 12.--14/13 at end 17 to finally lose 18/19 .

J. Mitchell (sk), C. McNeil, R. Volich, D. Patterson--------.-----11
R. Stockton (sk) C. Lander, G. Kane, H. Christensen-------.----18

---------------------Ron Stockton
----Outstanding skippers game from Ron Stockton to guide his rink to victory

This is game I saw the most of and must say that it was a ripper of a game with the score showing how hard it was to get the shot or keep the shot for half of the game .

Young Daniel Patterson was getting done early by Harold Christensen but managed to find the pace and line to nail Harold on the day, must say I have seen Harold play many better games than today but for all that he was still an effective leader..
The big player for The Reds up till the 11th end was Jeff Mitchell who showed that he is a quality skipper and it was he who kept his team in this contest. However the pressure was always on due the great game Greg Kane was playing as a two and the "Old Pro" Chris Lander also was having a great thirds game and was never far away from what ever he attempted, he would have got plenty of votes today on that performance. But the "Man" was Ron Stockton who was soooo goood today.
Stocky often changed a down situation to an up situation. His was a quailty game and I am sure he would have been delighted with his performance. The nub of it all is the back three won it for the Knights in a quality performance while Jeff Mitchell showed he has what it takes to call the shots with an excellent game today and explains why he has done so well this season.

R. Hughes (sk), R. Gilbert, G. Quann, P. Long. ---------------.--15
The Jones Boy (sk) T. Walsh, N. Bolton, R. Bolton.----------.---21

Dare I say it !! the Jones boy was sensational today with a withering display where he hardly wasted a bowl for at least the first half of the game where his rink led 15/1. Greg Quann said to me at the halfway mark that the Jones boy was playing some incredibly good bowls. I did manage to see some of his bowls and boy no matter what Russell did the Jones boy trumped him. Another to play a sizzling game was Tony Walsh who time and time again had the shot and with both bowls, his was a powerful display indeed.. At the 10th end the score was 15/1 for the Jones Boy.
One mistake by leader Ross Bolton may well have cost the game for Cambridge when he chose to put the jack down instead of giving the mat away as had been the case up till this point of time when the Jones boy went to have a drink of water, with a lead of 15/1 and your skip having last bowl why would you take it upon yourself to alter the course of the game by giving Russell Hughes the last bowl of any game. Look at the cost of this stupid action. The game changed course and allowed the Hughes rink back into the game and give the Reds victory on the major scoreboard.

The Vic Park boys started to work their way back into the game after being given the luxury of having last bowl and by the the start of the 17th end the score was 19/7 and some way to go yet for Russell Hughes. They kept plugging away to come to the last end where the scores were even on the major scoreboard at 72/69. The Jones Boy's rink fought hard to be 3 shots up after a great bowl from the Jones Boy to wrest a close REDS bowl out of the head.
It was all in Russell Hughes's hands with the last bowl of the match he got third shot to give the Reds victory.
There was much joy and celebrations and once again shows how good Russell Hughes is when under such pressure.

R. Butler (sk), S.Knott. W. Butler, G. Faulkner------------------28
B. Katunarich (sk), A. Heal, M. McGann, C. McKenna
,----- ----13

---------Shane Knott with the tape measure and Rhett Butler looking at the peg

----------------------

Rhett Butler's rink set up the win and was the only Vic Park rink to win and what a win, On end seven the score was tight with Rhett leading 11/8, by end twelve the lead was 19/10 and with plenty hanging on the game they continued the push to win in a convincing fashion.
I could see little of this contest but Shane Knott caught my eye with several telling drives to get the shot or kill the end while the King of Swing missed a few of his shots into the head tho I can recall him getting a couple.
So it seemed the backend was having a lot of success with shot play to keep Brian Katunarich's rink at bay and the win was a telling one for the Reds

COCKBURN ROOSTERS 74 (6) def DOUBLEVIEW POWERHOUSE 69 (2)
Cockburn were surprise winners in this game and completed the double because they won the game in the first round. There have been changes to the Cockburn line up but I am not aware of what they are
Lance Strahan and his rink cleaned up John Slavich and his boys with a large scoreline. Lance's rink have been traveling very well and this win is no surprise, what is a surprise is the loss by such a margin by John Slavich's rink.
Another handy win is that of Daniel Brown's rink over the very good rink of Dennis Katunarich
Jon Sharp's rink did well to win against Gary Carberry who had yet to win a game this season as a skipper.
Bruce Urquhart had a good win against Steve Srhoy's rink who are battling to win a game of late.
The loss by Doubleview turned out to be no big deal as Cambridge lost today therefore the PowerHouse have kept their position at the top of the ladder intact

Where to for Cockburn ? In their long history it is the first time they will not be taking part in the finals.
It would seem that the fire has gone from this team even tho they won today and will need an injection of new talent

SOUTH PERTH MILLERS 77 (6) def BEDFORD BULLS 67 (2)
Another important game for Bedford while the game had no consequence for the Millers.
Bedford needed a win to help them avoid relegation. They have picked up 2 valuable points and are now level with Kalamunda.
Scott Walker was the main destroyer with a handy 10 shot win against Dave Scott's rink who appear to have tailed off after some earlier promising performances.
The other big winner for the Millers was Nick Reagan's rink who accounted for Stu Bainbridge by 5 shots. Nick's rink have proved to a very good foursome and it is very hard to beat them normally but at home it is even harder
Cliff Graybrook has clocked up another win in Bedford's hour of need and as we have said every point is vital while Steve Rushforth and his rink have carried all before them in their past four games also have snared another important win that yet may save Bedford from being relegated.

WANNEROO EXPRESS 95 (8) def MELVILLE MAGIC 52 (0)

With everything on the line in this game for the Melville Magic to play at their best we have to say how disappointing to see such a scoreline for this game.
Wanneroo were just marking time but the score suggests they were doing more than that. Ted Alden took over the skippers position for the first time playing for the Express and came up with a win against the normally hard to beat Cameron Girvan.
The Wanneroo Wizard had had a whopping win against Steve Hughes who didn't have his normal side today, has finished the season full of running

Is this the end for the famous Melville Bowling Club? I cannot remember them ever being out of the premier league but the worrying thing is can they come back into the premier league from One White. It isn't looking good, lets hope I am wrong

OSBORNE PARK SAINTS 94 (7.5 ) def KALAMUNDA 61 (.5 )

As in the first game, the Kalamunda side took it right up to the Saints from the start.

After 50 ends they were ahead on the aggregate, and up on 3 rinks, with Gary Caffell's rink the only Ossie Park side not down.

However, on the the 13th end, Caffell picked up an 8 on Neale Griffen, to kick start a Saints comeback. On the next end Caffell's side scored a 5 to skip away on their rink, and get the Saints noses in front on the aggregate.

This proved the inspiration for the Saints, and all the other rink scores gradually tightened up.With Caffell's side in irresistible form, and building on their lead, the aggregate was quickly taken away from Kalamunda, and the question was how many vital points the home side could salvage.

Unfortunately, Billy Brandsma's rink, which had led Daniel Trewhella all day, dropped a 5 on the 3rd last end to surrender the lead, and their hopes of gaining a point.

Similarly, Neil Payne's four, which had enjoyed a big lead early on against John Goddard, was gradually reeled in, and lost by 7 shots.

The only joy for Kalaumunda was the half point picked up by Mitch Biglin against James Jaworski, when the Kalamunda side scored a 3 on the last end to draw the rink.

A great win for the Saints, which keeps them in the mix for a top 2 finish, and a disappointing result for a Kalamunda side which is now battling to avoid relegation.
