The Bedford Bulls won their first game of the season in a huge upset win against the Osborne Park Saints. The game was played on the carpet, the last time a game was played on the carpet was about two seasons ago. The move paid dividends because Osborne Park Saints were slow out of the blocks and took some time to find their range. The Saints have dropped to third place on the premiership table as a result of this loss.
The Wanneroo Express come up trumps at home against the Cockburn Roosters with a nice 9 shot win
The Doubleview PowerHouse win another tight game, this time rolling the Victoria Park Reds at Doubleview
Sth Perth win their first game this season against a finals contender, the Cambridge Knights,
Kalamunda are sitting in second position after putting Melville away with a huge win this afternoon

BEDFORD BULLS 83 (7) def OSBORNE PARK SAINTS 76 (1)

Stu Bainbridge just keeps on keeping on with another fine win, this time against one of the gun rinks in the competition. The Bedford rink led 10/3 as Daniel Trewhella and his side were trying to come to terms with the tricky Bedford carpet. They did find their way back into the game and led 12/10 on the 14th end.
From here on it was very close with each side hanging in there, they were 16/16 on the 19th end and anyones game Stuart Bainbridge's rink come up trumps to win the game 19/16.
Bedford won 11 ends
Ossy Pk won 10 ends
C. Graybrook(sk) J. Gupanis, P. Healy, N. Watson________ 21
B. Galloway. G. Evans, G. Nicol, F. DiGuiseppe __________ 16
The Saints got crucified by Cliff early on - and weren't playing that badly, generally having bowls in the head, but Cliff was converting everything, and when combined with a few bombs being played by Jim Gupanis & Peter Healy , they were fortunate to only lose by 5.
This was the game that got Bedford in control of this match with Cliff Graybrook and his rink leading 12/0 on the 6th end then extending that lead to 17/4 on the 9th end, leaving Bill Galloway with a mountain of work in front of him Cliff Graybrook led 20/10 16th end and from here Bill Galloway and his rink came back to finish 5 shots short. It was a good comeback by Bill and his boys who picked up an important three on the last end to help the aggregate
Bedford won 12 ends
Ossy Pk won 9 ends
Paul Hunter(sk), N. Minchin D. Scott, P. Hunter___--__--__ 24
G. Caffell, J. Jaworski, P. Ker, J. Coleman_______________20
This rink was last to finish, they had about four ends to play after the other rinks had finished. The game in the earlier ends was a nip and tuck affair the biggest margin in the game was 12/5 in favour of Paul Hunter, who was calling the shots for the first time in the Premier League
Paul Hunter Bedford ( pictured) Skippers for the first time and wins against Gary Caffell's gun rink
The pressure was right on in these last four ends for both sides with the aggregate at stake The score was 17/16 Bedford's way. They then picked up a 3 to lead 20/16. Not to be outdone Gary Caffell played a bomb to trail the jack back for 4 shots to tie the rink scores 20/20 and Bedford leading the aggregate by 3 --79/76
The Saints front end held 3 shots and but a reaching draw from Paul Hunter sat in the head to cut it down to 2 Gary Caffell played a good bowl but I was not able to see if he made three again
Another view of a spectator
When the skips crossed over, the Saints held 3 shots (enough for a tied aggregate). Paul's first bowl finished just past the jack, but not counting. Gary drew a toucher, but moved the jack about 9 inches, taking 2 of our front bowls out of the count, and reducing our shots held to 2. Paul then played that bomb of a bowl, converting from 2 down to 4 up, and leaving Gary nowhere to go.
Paul Hunter played his last bowl and one that he will never forget. definitely down two shots he trailed the jack into an impossible position to make it four shots. Gary Caffell could not alter things with the last bowl of the game and it was all over Red Rover. Bedford won their first game of the season.
Bedford won 11 ends ---2, 2, 0, 0, 3, 0, 3, 0, 1, 1, 0, 3, 0, o, 0, 1, 1, 3, 0, 4----24
Ossy Pk won 10 ends---.0, 0, 1, 1, 0, 2, 0, 1, 0, 0, 2., 4, 0, 2, 1, 0, 0, 0, 4, 0----20
B. Fullagar (sk) , B. Donovan, B. Radford, F. Andrich _._____19
J. Goddard, I., Payne, G. King, D. Appleton______________24
This is the rink I watched today and what an impressive rink that John Goddard has with him. There is strength in every position, and the team give their all for one and other. The score line of 24/19 does not correctly display the how much better the side was than the Bedford rink
The Leader Dave Appleton gave a great display of leading today to win his position quite clearly, often he had two bowls sitting on the jack. Early in the game he was beaten to the jack by Frank Andrich, he was asked to drive out the bowls with his second bowl and bang out they went .
He is a player who has definitely improved in this, his second season in the big time. There is possibly a bigger future ahead of him if he can maintain the standard he produced today.
Gordon King also was a clear winner playing two against young Baden Radford, when the chips were down and a big bowl was required Gordon King delivered it
Bedford's Young Baden Radford had some good bowls thru the game and is sure to improve with a season of Premier League behind him
Ian Payne Osborne Park (pictured) played a great game as three
The feature of the game was the huge battle between the thirds, Bob Donovan and Ian Payne. Both were outstanding
I have often seen Ian Payne play and he has yet to put in a bad game, today he was terrific and always responded to difficult situations.
Bob Donovan was the best player for Bedford quite clearly. He was under severe pressure often and without the game he produced today the score could have blown out to anything.
Bob Donovan Bedford (pictured below) A mighty game today playing three
John Goddard played another very good game, he converted when down with either drive or draw and his weight control was very good. A top line performance
Bedford's Bruce Fullagar skippering his second game in the Premier League can take some heart out of his performance today and will get better as he settles into the role. Bruce played some great draw shots to add to the count when up. He found it a harder to convert when down (that will come ) but if he can get the start from the front end he will be much harder to toss.
The Bedford Boys got out to lead 8/3 after 5 ends with John Goddards rink coming to terms with the carpet. John and his boys soon did and led 16/8 after 10 ends
From here on is where Bob Donovan made the difference, he really saved the day against quality bowling from the Saints, the score was 20/19 in favour of John Goddard on the 18th end and they went on to win a well deserved victory
The Saints won 14 ends scoring 1,1, 1, 3, 1, 3, 2, 4, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 3.
The Bulls won 7 ends scoring 3, 5, 3, 1, 1, 3, 3.
Best player
3. Dave Appleton---A terrific leaders game today
2. Bob Donovan-----He saved Bedford from a huge blow out in the score
1. Ian Payne--------A great game for his side
WANNEROO EXPRESS 79 (6) def COCKBURN ROOSTERS 70 (2)
This was another important win for the Express and not entirely unexpected. There were some surprising results, they being the huge win by The Neville Stevens rink who crushed the previously unbeaten rink of Matt Kurta. The odds of this happening were slim to say the least going on the display of the Cockburn rink last week. Neville Stevens's rink were under pressure to perform and they could not have done this a better time.
Old man River Geoff Ellis, has done it again with Reg Humphreyson playing this season as his three while new chum Paul Knight would be delighted with the action so far, Sean Wright has shown he is a class leader in previous games .
Steve Srhoy had a good win against the normally hard to beat rink of Stein Davies and looks set for another fine year.
Crackah Jack Lance Strahan, had another tight game and put the solid rink of the Wanneroo Wizard away, who has now lost two of his first three games

Another tight game for the PowerHouse against a hot Vic Park Reds 16 . The rink of Jon Sharp made the difference with a handy 6 shot win against RhettButler's rink.
This was the first win of the season By Jon Sharp and very timely one for the PowerHouse. Perhaps the most important win was that by the unbeaten John Slavich led rink who got over the line by 2 shots against the gun rink of Russell Hughes. Tho the win was small, there is no doubting the value and its importance in the scheme of things
Robert Ball made his first appearance for the PowerHouse this season replacing Dennis Katunarich who was not available for this game. His rink was successful against Rooster Wishart who remains winless to date in this new season
Jeff Mitchell was the only winner for the Reds when his rink rolled Prickles Thorn to keep his momentum going along nicely

Sth Perth Millers would be a very happy club and are sure to be celebrating their first ever win in the Premier League. This great victory was set up by Nic Reagan's rink who got hold of Brian Katunarich's side with an 11 shot margin. Nick had a good record in One White and after his first game loss has well and truly been a key in the fortunes of the Millers.
Ross Bresland's rink have done a mighty job to hold the classy rink of Trystan Smallacombe to a draw.
Ron Stockton's rink came back after last weeks loss with a swap of positions to record his first win of the season against Ken Pride who has done everything except win a game so far this season
The Jones Boy has won his third game for the season and has proved to be quite a recruit for the Knights.

Kalamunda make hay while the sun is shining as they shoot to second place on the ladder and could even be top next week after their Bedford clash
All rinks were comfortable winners
Skipper Cameron Girvan's name is missing from the Melville list, not sure why.
