November 10, 2007
An almost predictable round of pennants today with all the fancied sides winning today. Sherro did select Sth Perth to win and they didn't.
The game of the day was exactly that when Cambridge fell over the line after leading by a hefty margin against Cockburn. We saw some new stars arrive on the scene today with Luke Richardson and Matt Kurta in fine form during the game.
However Cambridge came out winning the game and this win was so important for them, a loss would have put them on the back foot for the rest of the season. Trystan Smallacombe and his rink have been the flagship for Cambridge over the past three seasons, that has continued on when the rink played a scintillating brand of bowls to guide the Knights to victory.
Osborne Park had another crushing win, this time against the depleted Melville Magic with three rinks on fire, Cameron Girvan stood tall today to bring home the Magic's only point.
The PowerHouse did what we all knew they would do, clean up the Wanneroo Express. The PowerHouse had to fight for their win on three rinks, the highly fancied rink of Clive Adams were the only rink to win and that was against Jon Sharp, who so far has not won a game.
The powerful rink of Dennis Katunarich won by a small margin against Stein Davies who also has yet to win a game. John Slavich's rink set up this victory with a very handy score of 23/11 against Neville Stevens.

Kalamunda strut their stuff on their home greens to take the wind out of the Sth Perth sails. While there wasn't a lot in the margin, Kalamunda would be happy to see off the Millers and take the big end of the points Nick Reagan was the shining light for the Millers getting hold of Mitch Biglan while Kalamunda owe much to Neale Griffin's rink who had a nice win against Kevin Howieson 20/11

Vic Park were far to good for Bedford today picking up 7 points and will now look forward to having games against the higher placed sides. Russell Hughes continues to shine with another telling win today, Cliff Graybrook got hold Rooster Wishart who has yet to win a game this season

Trystan Smallacombe and his rink got away to a great start, one that all sides wish could happen for them. Trystan and the boys led 17/0 0n the 11th end and it was not till the 14th end that Steve Srhoy's rink scored, picking up a one.
I was not able to watch the game but from what I could I see from time to time, Trystan Smallacombe was playing outstanding bowls.
From here on the Steve Shroy and his rink started to get some runs on the board to help the aggregate to be 10/21 down on the last end and a chance to pull the aggregate out of the fire the agg. was 71/69 with the very last end of the match to be played.
Cockburn picked up one shot to finish two shots short of victory. 70/71
Best players for Cambridge were all of them, with the standouts being Nicky Lewis and Trystan Smallacombe.

Again we saw Cambridge fly out of the barrier to be leading 20/4 after the 11th end had been played. Things were looking fantastic for Cambridge and the lead they had gave the impression that this would be a walk in the park and see you later Cockburn. Then the worm started to turn for Cockburn, and the man to do most of the damage was Daniel Brown who played a sensational second half of bowls to help get his rink into a winning position to be 17/21 down going into the last end.
Aj HealThe stakes were high as the aggregate was now in the balance. The Cambridge rink picked up a one shot and held on to win 22/17.

Aj Heal (pictured) Played a good game in the second slot for the Knights

Best player for Cambridge was Aj Heal but obviously all Cambridge players played their part to force the win while Daniel Brown did his utmost to almost snare an unlikely win for his rink.

L. Strahan(sk) G.Carberry, S.Cerff, J. Galipo_____-------..--__...20
This game was a very high standard game from what I was able to observe. Brian Katunarich's rink got away well to lead 9/3 on the 7th end, from here on it was hard fought with little separating the rinks for the most part of the match. Lance Strahan was leading 15/14 on the 17th end, it was a very high standard game with many tight heads. Lance and his boys broke away t away to win the game.

All in all it was a hard day on the green for both sides. A highlight was Lance Strahan got angry in the game and let go with a powerful drive to smash the jack in two, the disappointment was, had it not broken he would have picked up two shots.

This is the game I got to see the most of and score it. What an impressive display by the Cockburn rink. I have never seen Matt Kurta playing in the skippers role, nor Steve West play ever, and Luke Richardson I did see in the State Triples playing lead where he had a game he would rather forget.

Matt KurtaMatt Kurta has been selected to play in the State squad, after this brilliant display today it is no wonder that he was selected. Matt has never played at Cambridge or on their carpet. He was outstanding. Any shot, draw, drive or a bit over was all at his command. In the early part of the game when it was tough going is where he showed his stuff and asserted his authourity, he didn't take his foot off the accelerator when the side got on top, it was his early work that got the side going.
Young Matt is in the State squad and so he should be.

Matt Kurta (pictured) fantastic skippers game today

Steve West was just soooooo goood. He played lead the way all skips would like to see their lead play, it was sheer class and a joy to watch.
Luke Richardson is in the State squad and might not be in the State squad shortly. He played the seconds position like it belonged to him. He was brilliant, only a rare bad bowl every now and then, with out a doubt young Luke has got the goods, like Matt he hasn't played on the Cambridge carpet.
Mike Zusman had a fair game today but didn't have a lot to do but when called upon, he was on most occasions in the area with his bowls.
The Cambridge front end was comprehensively beaten by precision bowls from the Cockburn front two. Try as they may it was mission impossible.
Greg Kane battled hard and did have several good bowls, while Harold Christensen certainly presented himself for the first half of the game.
That left Chris Lander and Ron Stockton on the defensive for most of the game. Chris Lander was his sides best player and won his position but Chris could not turn the tide for his side. Ron Stockton was in difficulty for most of the day and tried his best but it was not one of his better games today.
The abbreviated scores went 4/3, 10/3, 10/6, 13/6, 20/6, 21/13.

DOUBLEVIEW POWERHOUSE (7) 86 def WANNEROO EXPRESS (1) 69
Well the PowerHouse were pushed along by the Express with three games pretty close, John Slavich's rink were the main destroyers for the PowerHouse.
With a result like this we can say that the Express can take plenty of encouragement out of this game are going to have a big say about the placings in final four.
Meanwhile the PowerHouse are being and doing what they are always doing, that is winning their games and remaning premiership favourites.

OSBORNE PARK SAINTS (7) 90 def MELVILLE MAGIC (1) 62

The Melville game turned out to be a bit of a "walk in the park". Daniel Trewhella's rink skipped out to a 12-0 lead early on, and the other 2 rinks gradually got on top. By the halfway stage the Saints were 30 shots up on the aggregate, and the only question was whether the Saints could get another 8 points.
As expected the Saints got the job done with only one surprise, the loss of Bill Galloway's rink who went down to Cameron Girvan. The Saints were having a real battle with Cameron Girvan, who was producing some top notch bowls to keep his rink in it. Cameron played so well he deserved to salvage a point for Melville.

The win was a nice percentage booster for the Saints, they will be keen to continue on with their game which is against the Bedford Bulls
Melville can only keep trying and hoping things can get better for them as the season progresses.

KALAMUNDA (7) 80 def SOUTH PERTH MILLERS (1) 72

A disappointing day for the Millers given the game's importance.

"the Millers early on were on top with Scott Walker in front of Neil Payne, Nic Reagan comfortably up over Mitch Biglin and Kevin Howieson shading Neil Griffin's rink. Kalamunda's only winner was Bill Brandsma who was quite brilliant against Ken Pride and led by 7 or 8 after 10 ends. The game then changed quite markedly with Kalamunda's skippers leading the way. Neil Griffin took over his match with some amazing saves to draw level then pull away from the Howieson rink, Neil Payne's great draw game came to the fore to do much the same to Scott Walker and Mitch Biglin who looked at one stage to be going down by a cricket score, drawing some telling saves to ensure the margin would not blow out.

As often happens in bowls Ross Bresland and Ken Pride came good at the same time for the Millers on their rink with an 18th end conversion from 4 down to 5 up by Pride putting that rink in front for the first time.

Overall the aggregate was down to four with three ends to play, with Griffin taking the point over Howieson and Nick Reagan levelling the margins against Mitch Biglin. The Ken Pride - Bill Brandsma game went down to the wire (again !) with South Perth down one on the board but holding two after Pride had trailed the jack back with his first bowl. Brandsma was just long with his first, Pride made no impression with his last and being game down and the aggregate now close, Bill Brandsma with his last bowl drew to 30cm for the win and to ensure the aggregate was safe. A terrific bowl given the situation.

Chasing shots Scott Walker just fell short of taking the point from Neil Payne.

Overall the Millers were not far away, but as per their first game against Ossie Park when the pressure went on just lacked the toughness to control the game when points were up for grabs.

Two big games in the next fortnight Cambridge at home and Cockburn away, could determine South Perth's season.

VICTORIA PARK REDS (7) 108 def BEDFORD (1) 61
Victoria Park had an easy time of it today with a 47 shot win.
Bedford lost their best skipper Stu Bainbridge, before the start of the game due to illness. New skip in his place was Steve Rushforth. The Bulls re-adjusted their side after last week's first game.
Bruce Fullagar also played his first Premier League game as skipper.

Russell Hughes and his rink have carried all before them so far and will be hard to beat, as has Jeff Mitchell and Rhett Butler.
