March 31, 2007

What an absolutely fabulous day of bowls at Doubleview today. When Sherro arrived at the club I must admit I thought I had made a mistake and was at a football ground. There was a terrific atmosphere with all players involved in every bowl that was played, particularly the PowerHouse V the Saints. Each bowl played was like it was worth a million $ such was the intensity
The bowls from both sides were so close to the jack and every player was contributing to the contest.
The Skippers were sensational, either drawing, driving or the mid range shot.
Leaders were ultra competitive, well it was also the same for other positions.

If bowls had this atmosphere and standard I am sure it would attract more people to the games. It was exciting stuff to watch

L Thorn, J Slavich, D Slavich, M. Mitchell -------------------.---------.--22
A. Provost (skip), S. Knott, C. Fleay, Doc Oakley......------.. ...---------.20

Had to leave this game early, the score was 28/28 on 28 ends.
I am not surprised to see the PowerHouse win this game. They enjoyed the luxury of not having to change greens. Melville did have to come of a slower track. However that is the price a side has to pay if they finish fourth.
Having seen some of the brilliant game earlier between the PowerHouse v the Saints I didnt think the Magic could go with them. However It was a good contest with the exception of Dennis Katunarich getting hold of Cameron Girvan's rink in a match winning contest with the score being 33/9 which was to big a hurdle for the other rinks to overcome.

FIRST SEMI-FINAL

MELVILLE MAGIC (7) def
COCKBURN ROOSTERS(1)......93/56

Jon Sharp (skip), B. Gearing, R. Barnes, John Birch
--.-----------------27
G. Carberry (sk) M. Zusman , J. Ravilich, S. Novak, J. Galipo----------16

Jon Sharp was on fire in this game and any rink that played him would have had difficulty to hold their shots in the head. Boomber Gearing was fantasic and he certainly knows where that jack is on a Bowling green. John Birch and Roger Barns played their part in this win.

R.Butler (skip) ,G. Beard, R. Kennedy, H. Mosford ....-----------------...29
D. Brown (Skip), N.Pascoe, S. West, M. Brown-----------------------------5

Rhett Butler Butler showed his worth as a skipper in this game and was backed up by a great effort from the front three players. Glen Beard replaced Brent Alexander who was unavailable because of work committments and did a stirling job for the side. Harry Mosford has been a well kept secret down at Melville and showed he is a more than worthy player to represent the Magic.
Dan Brown was swapped as skip for Gary Carberry but it made no difference. I guess that it your side get beat up front you generally won't win.

A. Provost (skip), S. Knott, C. Fleay, Doc Oakley
......------.. ...----------.19
S. Srhoy (Skip), A. Petchell, I. Jakovich, S. Vassallio-------------------.13

This was a hard slogging game with little separating the two teams for most of the game and near the end it was Ant Provost who prevailed

Cam Girvan (skip), B. Mitchell, S. Hughes , J. Andrew....---------------18
R. Hughes (Skip), D. Penman , S. Cerff, Tepana,
------------- -----------22

Russell Hughes's rink has been a tower of strength and once again won a tight game with Cameron Girvan

SECOND SEMI-FINAL
OSBORNE PARK SAINTS (7) DEF
DOUBLEVIEW POWERHOUSE (1) ............. 82/63

J. Goddard (skip), Wings Evans F. Di Giuseppe, D. Appleton ..----- ....19
D Katunarich, A Delaporte, R Dempsey, J Wholohan -------------------18

This game was a rip snorter and a very high standard game with bowls around the jack like bees around a honey pot. John Goddard's side were holding the whip hand for most of the game.
John was leading 8/2 on the 5th end 10/7 on the 11th end then picked up a big big big six on the 12th end. They led 17/7 on end 13 and from there on things changed, 17/9, 17/10, 18/10, 19/10, 19/12, 19/14, 19/15, 19/18.
John Goddard has been in brilliant form and he and his rink have claimed another big scalp in the Saints drive to become premiers for 2007.
It was a great comeback by Dennis and his rink to almost win the game, and one thing is for certain that when the bowls are of the standard played in the game things can change so quickly.

Gary Caffell(skip), P. Pendergast, G. King. J. Coleman, ..........-......-.....23
K McIlroy, P Buller, J. Bausor, G Papadopolous--------------------------13
---------------------

Gordon King Saints (pictured) got this bowl away to draw shot in a tightly packed head toward the end of the game against Kyle McIlroy's rink

This game was on for young and old, and again the standard was just so good. There was nothing in the game with each side trading shot for shot up until end 15 when the score was 12/12 apeice.
With only 6 ends to be played The game was poised to go either way and it finally started to swing Garry Caffell's way who was getting great service from the leader Justin Coleman, Gordon King was good also.
The man of the match was St Paul Pendergast playing three.
The scorecard at 12/12, and all PowerHouse players doing their bit went for Gary Caffell 14/12, 17/12, 17/13, 19/13, 22/13, 23/13. So in the space of 6 ends it was all over. The standard also in this game was just great.

D. Trewhella (skip), Pat Caffell J. Tyrer, S. Wattleworth.....---..----....23
L Thorn, J Slavich, D Slavich, M. Mitchell -------------------.---------.--14

Some great heads and brilliant bowls where the game was well and turly up for grabs at the 14th end with the score at 10/9 in favour of Daniel Trewhella's rink. From here on they established their supremecy picking up 13 shots in the last 7 ends to over power Prickles Thorn hwos' rink managed to snare 5 shots.
Dan Trewhella scorecard 10/9, 15/9, 15/12, Prickles was still in the game at this point, 17/12, 17/13, 21/13, 23/13, 23/14.

----------------------

John Slavich (pictured) PowerHouse third plays a telling bowl early in the game

Bill Galloway (skip), Ian Payne.G. Nicol, P Maynard ......--.---- ---......17
R Ball,(skip) B Urquhart, W Langdon, C Slavich
--------------- ----.----18

As they often say "it aint over till it is over". This game was a beauty with Bill Galloway getting out to 6/0 on the 5th end. The bowls were so close to the jack and a rink could be 3 down with their closest bowl a foot away. Things started to get really hot for Robbie Ball because Bill and his boys started to slip away and led 15/8 0n the 14th end. Well as always in terrific standard games such as this nothing is in the bag till that last bowl has been bowled.
Robbie and his boys came home with a scorecard like this. 9/16, 13/16, 13/17, 14/17, 17/17, 18/17.

Robbie Ball won 11 ends
Bill Galloway won 10 ends
