Round 12 Premier division Click here to return to Pennant Scene

February 3, 2007
A terrific round of pennants today with a major upset when Morley defeated the Osborne Park Saints. The Saints would have been raging odds on favourites to roll the Morley Boys today.

Bedford fell over the line today against the Cambridge Knights who almost stole the game. The Jones Boy and his rink were the last off the green and with three bowls left to play on the 84th end he drew second shot to give the mighty Bulls a one shot lead on the major board. Brian Katunarich was unable to respond to the situation and Cambridge lost.

ALL EYES ARE ON THIS BOWL FROM SCOTTY EDMONDS AS IT NEARS THE HEAD. SCOTT'S BOWL GOT A RESULT FOR CAMBRIDGE

-----------------

Cockburn Roosters won again as expected, and keep the dream alive to play in the finals by winning their 5th game straight. The Wanneroo Express are now at the fork in the road and one would have thought they could have had a better result.

Melville won as expected against Kalamunda but disappointingly drop a point. Time will show how important every point will become in the scramble for positions for the final four

The PowerHouse won their 10th game straight, as expected, and they, like Melville also dropped a point which is a surprise considering the game was played at Doubleview.

Sherro got four correct selections this week
Bedford, The PowerHouse, Melville, Cockburn

BEDFORD BULLS (6.5 ) def CAMBRIDGE KNIGHTS (1.5 ) ......68/67
Bedford came from a fair way behind to just fall across the line in this very tight encounter.
Cambridge came to play and play they did, leading all the way till the third last bowl of the match.
Most would have selected Bedford to win. The performance of the knights was a surprise considering that Trystan Smallacombe and his rink who are the best rink at Cambridge, were beaten. If they lose then generally Cambridge lose.

The last few ends of the game became very exciting with so much hinging on the result and so little difference in the agg.

S.Bainbridge (skip), S.Rushforth,  N. Minchin, D. Scott ---------------.-.18
T.Smallacombe(skip) N.Lewis,N.Bolton,B.Kiely-------.-----. ..-----------14

When I saw that Stu Bainbridge and his rink had drawn Trystan Smallacombe it was the best outcome for Bedford because I do think that Stu and his boys were the rink best equipped to take Trysto and his boys on.

That proved to be the case because this game was a very high standard game with plenty of close bowls and each rink hard to fight hard to get shot. Often doing it when there was only a matter of inches that separated the bowls.
Stu jumped out of the blocks to lead by 7 shots after two ends and from there on it was a dog fight till the last bowl.
End 7 saw Stu lead 9/3 and from there on the scorecard went 9/4, 9/5, 9/7, 10/7, 12/7, 13/7, 13/8, Stu Bainbridge and the rink jumped away to lead 18/9 on the 18th and we saw Trystan and his rink close the gap to be 18/14 at the end of play.

David Scott did a great job of leading I have no ther info other than Stu Bainbridge played a terrific game for the Bulls, The players from Trystan's rink all played a darn good game also.

D. Wood (sk) S. Shaw  (skip), G.Hill,   P.Healy-----------------------------15
S.Edmonds (skip) C.Lander,, C.McKenna,G.Kane,-----------------.-------20

This is the game Sherro watched, it was a good standard game and a hard fought affair.
Daniel Wood has taken over the skippers job with Lance Strahan not available.
Dan has done well in the two games he has skippered winning both of them.
There wasnt much in the game for the first five ends, with Cambridge leading 6/4. Peter Healy was doing best for Bedford while Shane Shaw was on fire in these early ends. Chris Lander and Chris McKenna were playing very well at his stage also.

Plenty of interest from chris lander Peter Healy, Shane Shaw and Greg Hill.

-----------------------
The game score was 9/9 on the 12th end and it was from here on that a change came about to see Cambridge rocket out to lead 18/10 on the 17th end. This was bought about by Scotty Edmonds doing some good things along with Chris Lander, they both dominated their positions in the period of 10th end to the 15th end, either converting or cutting the count down.
They had 13 effective bowls in comparison to Woody and Shane's 6 in this period.
From here on the game seemed to tighten up scorewise but there were a couple of very ordinary ends. It was vital that Bedford keep the score in check and not let it blow out, they won the next three ends keep the loss to 5 shots

CAMBRIDGE WON 11 to 10 ENDS

LEADERS
Peter Healy had a pretty good game and won the leading duel to give his rink every chance of victory leading against Greg Kane who played a good servicable game for Cambridge.
SECONDS
There wasn't much in it between Greg Hill and Chris McKenna . Chris was on top in the first half with many great bowls but he fell away from the 12th end.
Greg was busy with out being at the top of his game, they broke even
THIRDS
Shane Shaw did a good job for most part of the game and played quite a few great bowls when under the pump. Shane had a quite period thru the middle of the game. Apart from that he was competitive,
Chris Lander had a very good middle part of the game and was instumental in helping bring a buffer between the two sides along with Scotty Edmonds,
SKIPPERS
Woody had a fair game and did some good things, His fell short when down early on in the game but quickly fixed that area of his game, He made a couple of good saves thru the game, over all he played well.
Scotty Edmonds has the better of the skippers duel and his game thru the middle stages in combination with Chris Lander, was the reason why his rink got over the line. Scott also made more conversions than Woody
This is Woody's first loss a a skipper in the Premier League and he will learn much from todays game.

Best players
3. Scott Edmonds. 2. Peter Healy. 1. Chris Lander

P. Harris (skip), C. Graybrook, B. Donovan,, M. Lemos,--.--------------18
R. Stockton (skip) T.Walsh,A.Heal,, H.Christensen
--- - -- ------------.-18

Again this was a ripper of a game with little separating the sides for the most part of the game. Harold Christensen was leading the way as he usually does, doing it extra good!! and recieved good backup from his teammates.
We find that at the 11th end the score was 11/11 and from here on Ron Stockton's rink got away from the bedford boys, Ron Stockton was going well against Pieter Harris and did plenty of good things for his side.

The completion of 16th end had Ron Stockton in front 18/13. Something had to happen for the Bulls, they were behind on three rinks and looking in danger of losing. If they were going to win this game Pieter Harris and his rink had to produce an effort to help make a difference. They did and won the next three ends to draw the game.

Best For Bedford was Pieter Harris
Cambridge had an even performance I was told. Ron Stockton produced some big pills when the chips were down.

BEDFORD WON 11 ENDS CAMBRIDGE 10

The Jones Boy (skip), C.Graybrook, Paul Hunter, V.Colley-------- --.---17
B.Katunarich (skip) M.McGann, W.Maher, D.Irvin.--------------.---.---.15

This was a long drawn out affair and scoring was very hard to do, but the result of this game was crucial to the Bulls winning the aggregate.
We saw the Cambridge Knights were playing like Knights and always seemed to have control of the game. The score was 9/15 down for the Jones Boy at the completion of the 17th end.

Like Pieter Harris's rink, they had to produce the goods or goodnight aggregate. Well the Jones Boy and his rink that had Vaughan Colley leading very, well take control of the game by picking up 2 shots per end over the next four ends.
The last end in particular was nerve wracking to say the least with Bedford one behind on the agg but holding shot. There was plenty of room to get another but it didn't come until the Jones Boy drew shot with his first of two bowls.
Brian Kat fell short with both bowls and a win for the Bulls was in the bag.

BEDFORD WON 11 ENDS CAMBRIDGE 10

DEF MORLEY (7) def OSBORNE PARK SAINTS (1)..............86/66

A magnificent victory to the Morley Boys and it would be one of the best paybacks you could imagine. In the preseason scratch match, the Saints sent over a side containing only three premier league players and wiped the floor with them.
In the first round match, again two rink got smashed, one of those being Wayne Neilson's rink who lost 6/31. The other was "GoKart" Urquhart who lost 9/35.
Speaking with Wayne after the Best of the west he assured Sherro that he and his rink were ready for action and would be going at top pace for this game and that Morley would win the contest.

Brad Moyle Morley (pictured) promising young player celebrates his return to the Premier League

Fanatasic for the game to see how Morleyy have stuck at the task and if they can eliminate their inconsisitency good things await them.
Also good to see Bruce Walter break thru for his first win for the season.

Osborne Park Saints would be pulling their hair out after todays loss and this on top of Bill Galloway's third heavy loss for the season and the continued downside of John Goddard's rink would be cause for concern.

COCKBURN ROOSTERS (6) DEF WANNEROO EXPRESS (2) ............. 80/68
Cockburn Roosters remain on track after a convincing win today. Cockburns big gun side were tamed but they still took home the vital 4 points.
Big winner for the Roosters was the rink of Daniel Brown who smashed the normally reliable rink of Neville Stevens. This rink win set it up for Cockburn and keeps the competition full of interest.
Russell Hughes and his rink were having a great tussle and the scores were tied at 14/14, thatwas the end of the road for Geoff Ellis, they never scored again to 14/27

DOUBLEVIEW POWERHOUSE(7) DEF LEEMING (1) ........91/71

As expected we see the PowerHouse do their thing with a comfortable win picking up 7 points. The rink of Dennis Katunarich has been winning its games very comfortably and has won their last three games with a + 50.
Danny Comrie has the call over Robbie Ball and once again show they are a tough side to beat. Wayne Heldt had a good comeback after last weeks heavy loss to lose by two shots

MELVILLE MAGIC (7 ) DEF KALAMUNDA (1) ..............103/78

Some big score were the highlights of this game and the rink of Ant Provost keeps on winning. This time his rink played Mitch Bilglan on the famous "D" 2 rink. There is nothing wrong with this rink, it is the wind that makes it hard for visiting sides to come to terms with.
A huge result for Cam Girvan and his troops giving Neale Griffin a game to remember. Bill Brandsma had his rink changed around somewhat and have come up with a win that should be of concern to the Melville selectors after smashing Rhett Butler off the green 35/10.
Melville are still on track apart from the performance of the Butler led rink. Kalmunda continue to change their rinks around because thatis the only alternative for them.
