Round 10 Premier division Click here to return to Pennant Scene

January 13, 2007

The competition has now come alive and we see the Bulls falter at the home of the PowerHouse, and maybe they have started their decent down the ladder.
The PowerHouse have got the commitment to go all the way after an awesome display from two of their four rinks.
We look around and see that the Cockburn Roosters grab another big points tally, smashing Kalamunda to billyio. Must say that Cockburn will have some stern challenges ahead but their tradition of never being out of the final four must be a huge motivating factor to keep that record intact.
Hey what about the Cambridge Knights doing their thing and grabbing hold of a big 8 points away from home at Morley ( Sherro felt that in his water that it would happen to Morley) and have now put themselves in the picture as a side to take notice of.
Of course the Express should beat Leeming and they did and it gives them some breathing space to get things together from here on, one slip up and they are history

If you think about it, what about the Saints!! Now there is a victory of victories, having to almost concede a point straight away to the best rink in W.A. and play the Magic at their home (including rink two on "D" green) and leave with 6.5 points.

HHHmmm !! that is a huge win when you think about it! and one could ask, has the Magic recruiting drive worked out? IS IT PAYING DIVIDENDS !! are they getting value for money !!
Sherro is wondering, wondering and still wondering,.

Without the Big Ant and Doc Oakley and their contributions to the Melville cause where would the Magic be. One guess only!!
-If Melville are going to win the flag they have to get more from some of their players.

There are three happy clubs this weekend after Sherro has tipped them to win,
Sherro.

D/VIEW POWERHOUSE (8) DEF BEDFORD BULLS (0) ......86/56

---------------------
R Ball,(skip) B Urquhart, C Slavich, W Langdon--------------- -----.-----17
S.Bainbridge (skip), S.Rushforth,  N. Minchin, D. Scott ---------------.-.16

--------------------

L/R: The Jones Boy, Charlie Slavich, Neil Minchin Mel Lemos Dennis Katunarich and Winton Langdon

Stu Bainbridge lost his second game for the year and it was ever so narrowly to one of the all time great players in Robbie Ball.
From what I was able to see it was a great high standard game with plenty of tight heads.
Stu Bainbridge got away to a handy lead from the 4th end on where the score was 4/4. 13th end 13/6 and looking the goods in a hard tight contest and Stu playing many top shelf bowls for his side.
From here on they were able to win only one end of the 8 left with Robbie Ball playing some great bowls to bring home the bacon winning 17/16..
David Scott played his first game for the Bulls for sometime and from what I was able to see and hear he had a very good day at the office.

L Thorn, J Slavich, D Slavich, M. Mitchell ----------------------------------19
L. Strahan (sk) D. Wood  (skip), G.Hill,   P.Healy--------------------------18
This game was the furthermost away and not able to catch a glimpse of proceedings except for some great upshots by Prickles. Also glimpsed a couple of Lance Strahans drives
This game was a pretty high standard game where we saw both rinks having their moments, the score was 5/5 on the 6th end and 9/9 on the 11th end.
From here Prickles and his rink went into overdrive to shoot away to lead 18/9 on the 15th end and looking certain winners.
Lance and the boys had other ideas and come back hard to win 5 of the next 6 ends to just miss out on winning the point.

K McIlroy, P Buller, G. Nelson, G Papadopolous
-------------------------21
P.Harris (skip), B. Gartrell, B.Donovan,, M. Lemos,--.-----------------.-11

This was the game that Sherro watched today and up to the first 5 ends it was as good a game as one could wish to see. Huge Pressure and everyone putting in with some great bowls. In fact is was just sooooooooo good to watch and the standard right up there as both sides were trying hard to gain supremacy.

Bob Donovan clapping a Pieter Harris bowl while Pat Buller is claiming one shot, Pat has the pink bowl which is the shot

-----------------------

---------L/R: Gary Papadopalous, Bob Donovan, Pat Buller Barry Gartrell

Then things started to go the way of the PowerHouse with some great shot play by Kyle McIlroy when down and was into the head and getting results. Kyle had only one badly placed bowl which ended up being shot, but none the less he was doing his part and getting results with good shot play. Pieter Harris was the THE MAN up till the 8th end. He was setting a great example to his team mates and saved quite a few shots with his brilliant drawshot the score was 9/5 in favour of the PowerHouse..
Up until now the battle of the leaders was pretty even in a good quality contest and both would have been happy with their contribution
The seconds were at it hammer and tongs with both delivering some outstanding bowls, Gary Nelson just ahead in a quality contest.
Thirds Barry Gartrell and Pat Buller were even in their contest.
Skippers had an interesting dual with Kyle converting while Pieter Harris had his famous draw doing the job and saved plenty of shots with precise bowls.

From here on Gary Papadopolous played a great leads game and won his dual with Mel Lemos, the pleasing thing is Mel kept hanging in there.
Gary Nelson played a fantastic game for his side and was never far away from where he should be, Bob Donovan kept plugging away and played a very useful game.

Pappy Papadopalous and Pat Buller Doubleview (pictured) were the big match winners for the PowerHouse. Pappy had an outstanding game as lead while Pat Buller played a blinder in the three spot.

Pat Buller decided to lift a cog or three and and delivered the knockout blow in this game with a sustained bowling effort to turn the PowerHouse rink into winners and easily be the best player of the 8. The situation didn't matter to him, up or down he was able to draw ever so close. What a difference Pat Buller was to the end result.

The pressure eventually took its toll on Pieter Harris who faced end after end in a down situation and finally was unable to deliver the goods in terms of getting the shot. .
Kyle McIlroy played to a winning head on most occasions, he did deliver the goods when asked in a down situation, and would have been happy with his contribution towards his rinks win.

Scoreline
The PowerHouse win
4/4, 6/4, 9/4, 11/7, 13/8,16/8, 18/10, 21/11.

3. Pat Buller was outstanding playing three, equal best thirds games I have seen this year. Steve Rushforth is the other.
2. Gary Papadopulous was terrific and led the way for his rink. Best leads game Sherro has seen this season so far.
1. Gary Nelson played an awesome game as a second. In any other game he would get top votes.

D Katunarich, A Delaporte, R Dempsey, J Wholohan -------------------29
The Jones Boy (skip), C.Graybrook, Paul Hunter, V.Colley---------.---11

I guess this is as good as it gets for the Kat and this is about as bad as it can get for the Jones Boy. Two heavy losses in a row is not the way to go for the Jones boy.
We see that Dennis ended up winning 14 of the 21 ends. Up until the 9th end the score was 7/7and who would have thought that the rink could let it get away like this from this point on. Well, it did get away and we see the Jones Boy and his rink didn't score from the 8th end to the 17th end picking up a three to be 10/24 down.
The game finished a up with a brilliant win by Dennis Katunarich and his rink to set up the win for the Powerhouse.
The Kat's rink had been traveling fairly ordinary of late but a win of this magnitude is a good reminder that most rinks cant be on top of their game all the time.

OSBORNE PARK SAINTS (6.5) DEF MELVILLE MAGIC (1.5 ) ..............78/73

The Saints were 27 shots behind at the halfway mark of this game and what a win for the club to end up winners + 5 shots. They are on top of the table and next week will be the game of the season when they play the PowerHouse ay home.

D. Trewhella (skip), Pat Caffell J. Tyrer, S. Wattleworth...........---..........23
Jon Sharp (skip), Bomber Gearing, Roger Barns, John Birch
-----.-------.13

Daniel Trewhella and his rink have continued their winning run with a comfortable win over Jon Sharp, this win set up the winning result for the Saints. It is six straight for Daniel and what a difference he and his boys have made to the Saints fortunes after the first two games.
The rink of Jon Sharp hasn't been the same after a great start to the season and you can almost trace the beginning of the end from the Wanneroo game

Bill Galloway (skip), Ian Payne.G. Nicol, .P. Pendergast...... --....--. ......21
Cam Girvan (skip), B. Mitchell, R. Kennedy, J. Andrew
....--------.--.--....21

So Bill Galloway has to play on the hardest rink in bowls today. We see that there has been a drawn game on it for the second week in a row. To manage a draw was quite an achievement after Bill and his boys who were 10 behind and not looking likely winners.
Cameron Girvan has been in sparkling touch of late and continues to be one of the harder rinks in the competition to beat. The return of Bob Mitchell has been good for the Magic.

Gary Caffell(skip),Wings Evans. G. King, J. Coleman.................... .........18
R.Butler (skip) ,Kiran Cousins, C. Fleay, M. Trewhella....-----------.........16

Osborne Parks number one rink were behind for a lot of this game and found their way toward a win.

J. Goddard (skip),Fred Di Giuseppe C. Guelfi, P. Maynard
.. .....- ...---....16
A. Provost (skip), Doc Oakley, Steve Hughes , S. Knott ......----.. ...-------.23

The win by the big Ant would be expected, this rink has the best back half in the business and word has it that Doc Oakley was on fire playing a brilliant game for the Magic with rarely a bowl wasted in the first 15 ends. The Big Ant was good as he always has been this season. they lead by around 15 shots at one stage of the game so it was a good comeback by Guts Goddard and his boy to cut it back to lose by 7.

COCKBURN (7) DEF KALAMUNDA (1) ............. 104/55

This is a massive win for the Roosters and probably disappointing they didn't take all the points. Every point is vital to the fortunes of Cockburn for the remainder of the season.

S. Srhoy (Skip), A. Petchell, I. Jakovich, S. Vassallio-------------------.35
M. Biglan (skip) B.Tie, P. Coyle, N. Bruce - -------------------.-------.9

This is a game young Mitch Biglan will always remember. His first day standing at the same end as the legendary Steve Srhoy. It was a smashing of the highest order. However Mitch is only new at the skippering caper and he will learn plenty form a defeat of this size.

G. Carberry,(Skip), M. Brown, N.Pascoe, S. West ------------------------26
N.Griffin (skip), E.Martin , R. Eddy ,J. Rollnik ------------- -------------19
What a difference Norm Pascoe has made to the rink and to Cockburns season.

R. Hughes (Skip), D. Penman , J. Galipo, ? Bancroft, ------------- ------16
N.Payne (skip) G. Payne , F.Anderson,M. Douthie------------- -----.----17

Well done to Neil Payne and his rink with a brilliant win against State skip Russell Hughes. After a dismal season for Neil and his rink to win against this type of company is an achievement and maybe it is the start of better things to come.

D. Brown(sk) M. Zusman , J. Ravilich, S. Novak ---------------------.----29
B.Brandsma(skip) M. Clancy, R.Hutchinson, Clifford ------ ------------17

A great win by Daniel Brown and his under performed rink. This is their best win of the season and it was all the more meritorious when you consider that they were 4/15 down at the halfway mark. From there onward they lost on only one end (the last) to give Billy Brandsma a dose of the blues

Best player in this game was Mike Zusman who was at his best for the game

CAMBRIDGE KNIGHTS (8) DEF MORLEY (0) ........99/64

It makes one wonder at times when last week we see Morley almost defeat the PowerHouse and this week roll over at home to the Knights. We are not putting the knights down, they fully deserve the win as the scoreboard shows

S.Edmonds (skip) C.Lander,, C.McKenna,G.Kane,----------------------26
R. Urquhart (skip), J. Heiden, B. Driscoll, A. Elmer -------.------------.25

Great game between these two rinks and it was Scott Edmonds with the last bowl of the day drawing the shot to win this game against the well performed Robbie Urquhart led rink.

R. Stockton (skip) T.Walsh,A.Heal,, H.Christensen--- - -- -----------.-20
P. Aungier (skip) J Sheridan , A. Barron, M. Callcott --------------.----13

The word is this was a tight, hard contest and one costly end for Peter and his boys saw them drop a five,
Best player for Cambridge was Tony Walsh who was good all day and Allan Barron was best for Morley.

T.Smallacombe(skip) N.Lewis,N.Bolton,B.Kiely
