Pennant news

February 17, 2012
There were good results for Osborne Park Ladies pennant sides in Round14 played on Tuesday February 14th. Premier Division travelled to Thornlie and the result couldn't have been tighter – 53 shots to 52 with the Park winning on 2 rinks and all games being very close.

1 Green north took the bus to Mundaring – and the trip was worth the effort!! 6 points was the reward with Stella Gerritsen's rink of Ruth Garcia, Judy Golding and Elsie Thompson winning by the greatest margin 27 shots to 18.
2 Blue continued on their winning way at home with 5 points against Innaloo . Muriel Nipperus' team did well with a 10 shot victory over E.Sargant's team.

2 Green were in the unfortunate position of having one player unavailable at the last moment and therefore had to deduct 8 shots from the score of 32 by Marj Sims' team of Glenda Stuttard and Jill Walsh over Val Swetman's Scarborough team. Although winning on 2 rinks they fell 1 shot behind in the aggregate.

3 White at Bassendean, despite a good win by Bev Rowlands with Lorraine Alday, Bobbie Waycott and Rae Hedley 24 shots to 13, came home with 1 point. The club is so proud of these ladies who maintain a cheerful attitude and do their best each week whilst constantly dealing with personnel changes in their teams. The Saturday pennant ladies in 3 Purple gained 1 point, while 1 Blue had a bye last week.

We have reached the "pointy end" of the pennant season now with only one fixture left before players have to be registered in their positions and teams. Let's hope everyone involved in play-offs keeps healthy and is fit to play when the time comes for the really big battles of the season.

Recent Competition news

February 11, 2012
The Osborne Park Ladies Open Night Pairs Carnival was held on Thursday evening in balmy conditions and attracted a field of 30 teams from around the metropolitan area.

There were some very close tussles on the green and some great bowls played by talented lady bowlers. The result couldn't have been closer with the winners and runners up separated only by the number of ends won.

Winners were young State squad bowlers Bianca Riseborough and Shenayde Heldt on 4 + 26 (18 ends won) from Robyn Jolly (also a State squad member) and Sue Hogg on 4 + 26 (15 ends won).

Valuations WA sponsored the event and were generous with give-aways which were much appreciated by those lucky enough to have their cards drawn out.

Sorrento's Invitation Fours on Friday was not for the faint-hearted so far as weather conditions were concerned. Some teams were obliged to withdraw when players were heat affected.

Winners over the 3 games played were a Mundaring team skipped by Judy Stein with Olivia Linden, Lyn Philp and Wendy Marsh and runners-up a composite team of Pam Chalmers, Roma Dunn, Helen Stevens and Julie Lindsay (Osborne Park and Dudley Park)

Pennant NEWS

February 8, 2012
There were smiling faces all around following Osborne Park's Tuesday pennant results and with the exception of one division, aggregates won. Premier Division at home met Safety Bay, and with one win and one draw advanced a further 4.5 points on the pennant ladder. Division 1 Green North, also at home, lost to Merriwa. The winning team was that skipped by Peg Long with Lesley Bell, Jenny Greenhalgh and Margaret Gunn who defeated M.Purto's rink 24 shots to 18.

Division 2 Blue travelled to Beaumaris and continued its recent good form with wins on all rinks. Best performed was Lesley Wooldridge's team of Esther Herbert, June Rodgers and Margaret Dean with a 23 shots to 12 scoreline. Barbara Bronovich, Margaret Griffin, Sybil Stockton and Gloria Webb helped Division 2 Green in their 5 point victory over Sorrento at home with a 28 shots to 17 win .

Bev Rowlands came up a division to skip a rink which resulted in a 9 point win for that rink. Division 3 White are celebrating the much needed 6 points gained in their encounter with Victoria Park on home greens. Great credit is due to the ladies in this division who battle on week after week despite changes which are necessary because of absences from other teams which have to be filled by their players. The club is so proud of you.

Saturday Pennant results were 3.5 points to Osborne Park 1 Blue vs Beaumaris and 1 point to Osborne Park 3 Purple vs Yanchep. Due to the absence of Mosman Park players attending the Australian Open, the Tuesday pennant fixture scheduled for February 21st will be played at Osborne Park next Monday, February 13th.
With only 5 more games to be played we have certainly reached the "pointy end" of the season.

The January Thursday night open pairs was won by the Quinns Rock team of J.Winslett and B.Scalter. Runners up were Pam Chalmers and Danielle Youard and 3rd were Sylvia Pynes and Lyn Moffat of Osborne Park.

The next fixture for this event is February 16th and it commences with a sausage sizzle at 6.00 pm. Such a pleasant way to spend a summer's evening!

Lyn Moffat on 94403534 will be pleased to accept entries.

Premier Division travelled to Gosnells on Tuesday and although they won on 2 rinks it wasn't enough to secure the aggregate. The result was 2 points to 4. Winning rinks for the Park were those skipped by Mary Buktenica and Shari Solly.

Division 1 Green north has seen success in the 2 weeks since changes were made to the teams. At Cambridge Peg Long, Lesley Bell, Jenny Greenhalgh and Margaret Gunn won their encounter with M. Lal's team 26 shots to 19, and Mary Slavich with Margaret Lote, Thia Wright and Rosemarie Irving defeated Shirley Martin's team 22 to 17. The winning team for Cambridge was that skipped by G. McQueen.
Joyce Caffell
Joyce Caffell in good form in 2 Blue today

Division 2 Blue at home enjoyed victory against Quinns Rock with impressive wins by Lee Fordham, Joyce Caffell, Joan O'Grady and Hazel Brotherston and Lesley Wooldridge, June Rodgers, Lorna Cassidy and Margaret Dean. Another 5 points to 2 Blue!!

2 Green also had a good day at home, defeating Wanneroo and winning the aggregate. Marie Emmins, Sue Hubbard, Del Walsh and Leone Bruvelis were big winners to a 19 shot margin.

3 White continue to struggle due to a lack of available players at present. However, Rita Logan, Elaine Carter, Terry Rodgers and Jean Fahey did well winning their rink by 28 shots to 18 against Mt. Pleasant. The Ladies Open Night Pairs Carnival will be held on Thursday 9th February. Lyn Moffat on 9440 3534will be happy to hear from teams wishing to enter. This event is sponsored by Valuations WA in Osborne Park and a pleasant evening playing pairs on great greens is assured.

Pennant NEWS

January 26, 2012
In very warm conditions and on a fast green, Osborne Park hosted Melville in Premier League. A great win by Pam Chalmer's team of Isobel Davies, Helen Stevens and Beth Duffy who defeated Val Gmeiner's team 29 shots to 5 ensured an aggregate victory. Shari Solly with Cheryl Mannion, Lyn Moffat and Bianca Riseborough also won their encounter with Lorna Ward's team, but Mary Buktenica and her girls lost to Margaret Anderson's team.

1 Green North are back in winning mode following fairly drastic changes in the division. Newly appointed Skip Peg Long with Lesley Bell, Jenny Greenhalgh and Margaret Gunn defeated Warwick's Beryl Leppard and team 23shots to 11, and Mary Slavich's rink of Margaret Lote, Thia Wright and Rosemarie Irving were winners over Maxine Towler's team 26 shots to 13. Stella Gerritsen , Ruth Garcia, Judy Golding and Elsie Thompson lost to Warwick's M.Wilson by 8 shots.

2 Green played top of the ladder Stirling at their home greens in what turned out to be a very close match. Barbara Bronovich's team lost to Kate Stergiou by 3 shots; Marj Sims lost to M.Vlahov by 6, and Marie Emmins with Sue Hubbard, Del Walsh and Leone Bruvelis finished 1 shot up on D.Bulich's ladies.

2 Blue travelled to Bayswater who found they did not have enough available players for the match and forfeited

3 White at home won on 2 rinks but were behind on shots up so were not successful in capturing the aggregate.

A celebration was organised following the games to extend good wishes to Osborne Park ladies youngest pennant player Melissa Solly whose 21st birthday was today.

There still seems to be some confusion (judging by the telephone calls) with respect to attendance at clubs when a temperature of 37o or over is forecast. All pennant players are required to attend the venue where the fixture is scheduled, and umpires are in control after that.

BWA has supplied a statement to be read by the umpire of the day prior to commencement of play. As it was today, the forecast maximum did not occur during the playing of pennants – in fact there was quite a cooling breeze for most of the game.

January 19, 2012
Round 10 was a first encounter for most teams who should have met in the washed-out game 1 of the current pennant season. Premier League travelled to Leeming and came home with 5 points..

The big winners of the day were Shari Solly's team of Bianca Riseborough, Lyn Moffat and Cheryl Mannion who defeated Pam Strongman's team 23 – 11.

Mary Slavich's team of Peg Long, Margaret Gunn and Lesley Bell were the only winners in 1 Green north when they defeated the Bedford team skipped by Mai Chaimongkaew 21-17.

2 Blue at home earned 5 points against Cambridge largely due to the big margin in the game between Lesley Wooldridge's team and that of Poppy Bolton. 2 Green, on adjoining rinks went down to Nollamara with Osborne Park's only winning team being that skipped by Thia Wright.

The bus trip to Kardinya for 3 White proved to be well worth while when their 3 shot margin gave them a much needed aggregate. With a number of registered pennant players making themselves unavailable it was no easy task to put teams together, so well done to all on yesterday's result.

LADIES NEWS

Premier Division met the top of the ladder Manning side in yesterday's Tuesday pennant competition. Osborne Park's only winning team was that skipped by Pam Chalmers (the recently married Pam Haynes) with Lesley Bell, Helen Stevens and Beth Duffy, which defeated Liz West's team 18 shots to 14.

1 Green traveled to Beaumaris and in the beginning of the game struggled on the holding green. However, they came to terms with the conditions and emerged winners on 2 rinks and earned 5 points for their effort. Winning rinks were skipped by Mary Slavich and Stella Gerritsen.

One point was the result for Division 2 Green against Innaloo – Marie Emmins team of Jenny Szokolai, Del Walsh and Kathleen Shillinglaw won their encounter with a scoreline of 28 to 24. Not enough margin to carry the aggregate unfortunately.

Division 2 Blue played at home in their game against North Beach and gained their 5 points with victories by Lee Fordham's and Muriel Nipperus's teams. Lee Fordham, with Jenny Greenhalgh, Joyce Caffell and Hazel Brotherston defeated their opposition 26 shots to 9. "Pots" for this week!!!

Division 3 White had one winning team – that skipped by Bobbie Waycott, with Don Patterson, Jean Fahey and Rae Hedley. Don kindly filled the vacancy when we had no reserves left to replace a missing player.

Saturday's Division 1 Blue finished their game with ½ point against Manning, and Division 3 Purple had a bye.

Tuesday Pennant players are reminded that there will be a practice on January 10th – same starting time as pennant. Names to be placed on the list on the notice board.

Best wishes for Xmas and a happy and healthy New Year to all members of Osborne Park Bowling Club ;

Pam Haynes and Mary Buktenica also skipped winning teams to give the home side 6 points in round 8 of the Tuesday pennant competition.

It was a mixed bag for the other sides with 1 Green going down to Warwick 1. Scores were ½ to 5 ½ ; 2 Green gained the full count of 6 points against Yokine at Yokine; 2 Blue traveled to Kalamunda and were unsuccessful on all rinks, and 3 White at home lost to Mt.Lawley.

On Saturday 1 Blue lost to Manning 1 – 3 and 3 Purple defeated Quinns Rocks 3 – 1.

The final of the Championship Triples will be played on Friday evening 16th December. Due to player's work commitments the final will commence at 6.00 p.m. and not at the advertised time. It should be an exciting contest between teams led by two Premier Division skips, Pam Haynes with Melissa Solly and Helen Stevens and Shari Solly with Peg Long and Shelley Radcliffe.

Ladies Gala day

December 10, 2011
The Osborne Park ladies conducted their annual major fund-raising event yesterday when 36 teams from as far afield as Safety Bay visited for Gala Day.

A great Christmas attitude prevailed, no doubt beginning when the visitors were welcomed with a drink of champagne and orange and a home-baked shortbread and the background Christmas music set the scene for the day.

As usual the Ossie Park girls were generous in their donations for the raffles and in their assistance on the day, especially those who helped prepare lunch and afternoon tea for the players.

The winning team from the Wanneroo Club was Margaret Seez, Ann Hibbert, Gail Susac and Maureen Cowan.

Another pennant wash-out – what a shame. No Osborne Park ladies teams played today – our greens were closed quite early following very heavy rain. So unusual for us to be experiencing thunder and lightning for most of the day – but there are plenty more fixtures to come and lots of chances to make up lost points.

The Saturday girls had an entirely different problem – extreme heat. But they battled it out and 1 Blue came home with the 3 points – unfortunately 3 Purple lost their game. The semi finals of the Club Triples is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) .

Let's hope the greens are dried out sufficiently for the contest. The final will be played concurrently with the men's event on Friday evening December 16th. We have a full complement of teams for Gala Day on Friday – thanks to all those wonderful members who have donated or are donating their time to make this day a success.

The "mozzies" really burst the bubble for Osborne Park's Premier League side today when all rinks went down to the Mosman Park combination on their home greens 46 points to 73 points.

1 Green held out a determined Bassendean side with a winning aggregate score due to a great result by Stella Gerritsen's team of Elsie Thompson, Cheryl Mannion, and Ruth Garcia 28 shots to 10.

2 Blue scored well on all rinks against Doubleview and were rewarded with the 6 points. The games were played on Osborne Park's "B" green which was running at 15.5 seconds. And 2 Green playing at Perth & Tatts came home with 5 points – highest scoring rink was skipped by Barbara Bronovich with Marg. Griffin, Jenny Szokolai and Gloria Webb.

3 White traveled to Bullcreek and were defeated on all rinks.

The Saturday girls had a great result last weekend – 4 points each to 1 Blue and 3 Purple.

Congratulations to Shelly Radcliffe who played in the winning Women's State Championship Fours team skipped by Noelene Abe.

Pam Haynes
It was dark at the Park today with only one shining light in the five divisions. Well done to Premier League who scooped the pool against Thornlie. Pam Haynes rink of Isobel Davies, Helen Stevens and Beth Duffy continued their good form with a 24 to 13 scoreline, while Mary Buktenica's team won by 7 shots and Shari Solly's team won by 3.

Pam Haynes in good form today

1 Green north at home met Mundaring and Stella Gerritsen, Ruth Garcia, Cheryl Mannion and Elsie Thompson gained the 1 point for the division. Mary Slavich's team lost by only 1 shot.

2 Green, away to Scarborough, found the home team too strong on the day, and 2 Blue won on one rink. The successful team was Muriel Nipperus, Helen Hitchcock, Joan Griffiths and Muffy Michael who won by 5 shots..

3 White hosted Bassendean but lost on all rinks.

Saturday Pennants 19th November

Well done Ladies

November 20, 2011
Joyce Caffell travelled back to her home town Tammin on Saturday with an Osborne Park team of Marg Griffin, Sue Hubbard and Thia Wright.

All came home with smiles on their faces, not only because of the wonderful hospitality and the companionship of many country bowlers they had enjoyed, but having won 3 out of 3 games – with the prize money.    Well done girls!!!!!

State Senior Pairs

November 20, 2011

The Women's State Over 60 pairs concluded at Osborne Park on Friday. The semi finals were fought out between Maureen Beard and Jennifer Kite (Safety Bay) and Bev Baker and Sue Delaporte (Mosman Park) and Kay Marwick and Helen Capes (Melville) and Pam Strongman and Sue Neill (Leeming.)

The final resulted in a win to Bev Baker and Sue Delaporte from last year's winners Pam Strongman and Sue Neill. Congratulations Bev and Sue, the 2011 State Women's Over 60's Pairs Champions!!!

The winning team was Ruth Garcia, Beryl Brennan, Sylvia Pynes and Beth Duffy; runners-up Cheryl Mannion, Lyn Moffat, Deanne Cooper and Margaret Gunn. Plate winners were Lee Fordham, Judy Golding, Joan Griffiths and Rosemarie Irving from Stella Gerritsen, Lorraine Alday, Hazel Brotherston and Margaret Dean.

Good luck to all Osborne Park teams competing in the Women's State Fours, commencing next Wednesday.

Ladies Pennant, Open Pairs, Seniors State Pairs news

November 15, 2011
Premier division's game began slowly when after 3 ends the aggregate was 8 in arrears for Osborne Park in their encounter with Safety Bay. But with true "Ossie" spirit the teams buckled down to remove the deficit and were rewarded with 6 points at the end of the day. Pam Haynes' rink of Beth Duffy, Helen Stevens and Isobel Davies had a great win – 26 shots to 12.

1 Green north struggled at Merriwa and were beaten on the day. Stella Gerritsen's team drew on their rink after a close tussle throughout the game.

2 Blue met visiting team Beaumaris at Osborne Park where they won on 2 rinks. Lee Fordham's team of Hazel Brotherston, Joyce Caffell and Jenny Greenhalgh had an outstanding result – winning by 22 shots.

2 Green also played their fixture at home against Sorrento, and although they won on 2 rinks did not have enough shots up to take the aggregate. Well done to these players, most of whom were promoted from Division 3 last year.

3 White traveled to Victoria Park, but a win and a draw were not enough to secure the aggregate for the side on this occasion. Some of our newer bowlers play in this division and the experience they gain will serve them well in the future.

The Over 60's Women's State Pairs commences tomorrow at Osborne Park and Beaumaris clubs. Post-sectional games will be played on Thursday at Osborne Park as will the final on Friday.

Thursday evening sees the first night of the monthly Open Pairs. Last year's venture into this new event was so successful it will continue from November through to April on the 3rd Thursday of each month. A sausage sizzle precedes bowls at around 6 pm.

Enquiries and team names to Ladies Secretary Lyn Moffat on 9440 3534.

Ladies State Bowls News

November 8, 2011
For the second weekend, selection trials for the women's State Side were held on Saturday and Sunday at Nollamara on a grass green and at Yokine and Mt.Pleasant on synthetic greens.

The morning at Nollamara began with the squad paying a silent tribute to the memory of the two former Presidents and Life Members of the Assocation., Connie Hicks and Ella Reynolds who passed away during the week.

The weather was extremely inclement on Saturday but the 20 State Squad members handled the changing pace of the greens well. The weather was much improved on Sunday for the a.m. and p.m. games at Mt. Pleasant. Thanks to the four Mt.Pleasant men who combined to supply strong opposition for one of the women's teams.

The squad will be reduced to 16 this week and all squad members will be advised by Bowls W.A.

Pennant News

November 8, 2011
A horrible day weather-wise, but a great result for the Osborne Park Ladies pennant sides today. Battling strong winds at all venues and no doubt, slower greens, the outcome was a credit to all players.

Playing at home, Premier division won on all rinks against Gosnells and the team skipped by Pam Haynes with Helen Stevens, (sub) Joan Griffiths, and Beth Duffy enjoyed a 25 -11 scoreline.

1 Green North also gained 6 points against Cambridge, also on home greens, Margaret Lote's team just pipping Stella Gerritsens with 10 and 9 shot margins.

2 Blue traveled to Quinns but failed to bring home the bacon by 3 shots. Lesley Wooldridge's team of Esther Herbert, June Rodgers and Margaret Dean won their rink 30 shots to 20. It would have been blowing a gale up the coast!

Another success story was that of 2 Green vs Wanneroo. The overall result was 72 shots to 44. Well done, especially in an "away" game!!!

And last, but certainly not least, 3 White battled it out on Osborne Park's "A" green against Mt Pleasant – exposed to all the elements. 5.5 points is a wonderful result, and all teams deserve a round of applause for their efforts.

I am sure everyone is looking forward to some real "bowling" weather. Let's hope it happens next week!!

Osborne Park Bowling Club – Ladies Club news

At last a fine day for bowls and the second pennant fixture of the 2001-2012 season! Premier Division won the day against Melville with a fine performance from Mary Buktenica's team and a close tussle between Pam Haynes and Val Gmeiner's teams.

1 Green also scored 5 points with Stella Gerritsen and Margaret Lote's teams prevailing against tough opposition from Warwick 2.

2 Green were outplayed by their very experienced opponents from Stirling,, and 2 Blue won on all rinks from Bayswater in warm conditions at home with the green running at 15.5 seconds. Lee Fordham's team did particularly well with a score of 26 – 10.

3 White went down to Warwick at Warwick.

Bowls WA has issued an Umpire's Statement which they have recommended to be read out by the Umpire of he day prior to the commencement of trial ends on any day where the forecast is for hot weather. The statement is available to all umpires from the ladies Selection Committee.

October 25, 2011
Unfortunately Pennant Fixture 1 didn't happen when heavy rain forced the closure of most greens except for a few synthetics.

Although many bowlers were inconvenienced by having to attend the venue at which they were scheduled to play only to find play was not possible, the reason for this change in the rules appears to have been substantiated. At least some sides had the opportunity to compete. There was no need to consult the thermometer this week!!!!

Amenities weekend is on Saturday and Sunday – mixed bowls on Saturday afternoon, and internations bowls Sunday a.m. and p.m. This is a fun weekend, and an opportunity to support the Club in it's fund-raising efforts. If you don't already have your name down, sheets are on both the men's and ladies notice boards. As is the sheet for Melbourne Cup Day when you can join your clubmates for a nice meal, a drink and a bet if that is your fancy.

The first ladies squad practice was held at Manning at the weekend, and we wish squad members from our Club, Helen Stevens, Shari Solly and Bianca Riseborough good luck and good bowling. The next practices are on November 5th and 6th at Nollamara and Mt.Pleasant respectively.

Mary Buktenica, who played 3rd to Lee Poletti in the recent Australian Senior Sides Championship at Warilla was very chuffed to help bring back the cup as winners of the event. Well done Mary and the rest of the team on a wonderful effort.

FOR PENNANT SEASON 2011-2012

BOWLS W.A. HAVE ADVISED THAT PLAYERS MUST ATTEND THE VENUE UNLESS THERE IS AN ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE AIR (6PR) AT 7.00 A.M. THAT ALL FIXTURES HAVE BEEN CANCELLED.

THIS WILL ONLY OCCUR IF THE ASSOCIATION HAS ADVICE THAT A FRONT IS APPROACHING ---- IT DOES NOT APPLY TO FORECAST TEMPERATURE.

UMPIRE OF THE DAY IS IN CONTROL OF PLAY IN THE EVENT OF HOT CONDITIONS.

October 21, 2011

At the recent forum held by BWA at Osborne Park B.C. it was announced that no late entries will be accepted for State events. Entry forms are posted on the notice board well in advance of the closing date so there is no reason for anyone who wishes to compete having to miss out.

Club fixture books are now back from the printer and will be distributed next week – on Tuesday for pennant players and on Club Day (Wednesday) for non-pennant players.

The new BCIB bowls stickers for home fixtures, are also now available. Please note the error in the BWA Pennant Fixture Book --- starting date for pennants is Tuesday October 25th not 26th.

It was with regret that the retirement of our long-time Patroness Jess Wilkes was accepted this week. Jess is a Life Member of the Club and former Ladies President, and has committed much time as a volunteer in various roles. She has reached the grand old age of 90 plus and feels it is time for a well deserved rest.

A much loved member, all club members wish Jess continued good health and happiness. The ladies had the opportunity to express their thanks on Wednesday when our former patroness was presented with a floral arrangement.

The Ladies Club Fours begins Wednesday October 26th and the final will be on Friday November 18th - an evening final following the success of the concept last season of the ladies and men playing finals at the same time. Fingers crossed for fine weather!
