Doug Eaton versus Grant Nicol
An enthralling set of games at Osborne Pk. In particular there were two outstanding games. Firstly the game between everyone's favourite Dashing Doug Eaton who especially had a haircut for this big contest, and the real nice guy and gentleman, General Grant Nicol.
An absolute ripper of a game showcasing the high level of skills both these two gents possess
At one stage the score was 9-9 apiece when Doug Eaton took command of the game and shot out to lead 19-9. However the General wasn't given that nickname for nothing, started a long searching run to not only reel in the deficit but hit the lead 21-20.
There were many ends where the skill level was sooooooo high and it was a huge battle for the honour of playing in the final.
All huge battles come to an end and we were not to know at this stage but the General was not to score again but went down swinging. Congratulations to both players
for producing such a quality game and Doug Eaton being victorious 25 - 21
Scott Edmonds versus Gary Caffell
Scott Edmonds was in very good touch for game against Gary Caffell and raced out to lead 11- 5. Was the Boy from the bush gone, could he recover against the good bowling of Scott.
Well as always in Gary Caffell games
the opposition are never across the line until they have survived a withering comeback which seems to be a hallmark of Gary's game in singles
The score was 19-19 and the game could go either way
Scott kept his composure and bowled top quality stuff to emerge victorious 21-19
John Goddard Versus Sherro
Sherro viewed this game as the equivalent of climbing Mt Everest and set out the game plan accordingly.
3 stages; get to the 10.000 ft base camp and be around the place score wise then make for the 20,000ft base camp in good shape and make an all out final assault to the top of the mountain at 29,000 ft
Things didn’t go according to the game plan when Sherro was anchored at the foot of the Mountain, and not leaving at the same time as John and found himself 14 – 1 down.
John who was now waiting at the 1st camp for me and eager to continue, arranged have some Sherpa’s sent down to base one to ferry Sherro up to the 1st base camp. This kindly action reminding me of John Landy the famous runner who stopped mid race to help a fallen competitor.
Once there the medics got to work with the oxygen mask and Sherro sucked in plenty of oxygen then set sail for the 2nd base camp at 20,000 ft and arrived in good nick at 14 – 13 down.
The medics now had to work on John at the 2nd base camp, he was suffering from exposure and extreme cold. His condition likely caused by the long wait for Sherro to arrive at base one.
Things were looking promising when the final assault to the top of the Mountain was launched, when suddenly and quite unexpectedly Sherro was wiped out by an avalanch called “Guts” who had an unimpeded trip to reach the summit and once again demonstrated his enormous skills winning 21-14 in convincing fashion.
The Plate final
will be a contest between Peter Budd and Keith Guelfi. This should be a crackerjack game which will be played next friday night

Another huge day at the Osborne Pk Men's Club singles Championships
Maurice Hardy pictured here lets on fly in his game
Gary Caffell defeated "One on and One back Gordon King" in a terrific game which now leads to an exciting game between he and Scott Edmonds in the next round.
Due to commitments to State squad practice a couple of games have now been deferred, this is one of them and will be played thru the week
A big upset was the win of Dante Mariani otherwise know as the Miracle man (Dante played the best bowl ever played on a bowling green hence the Miracle man) when he rolled Rob Lawrence who was performed sensationally well in the State Single reaching the last 8
Another big result was the win of Grant Nicol who has been a runner up in this event when he rolled last years runner up David Rankin then had to withstand a great comeback from Eddy Richardson. Grant led 11-2 and was in cruise control and that was when Eddy found his range and was able to apply plenty of scoreboard pressure to make a game of it to finally lose 21-15
Another brilliant comeback with a better ending for the player who was behind was in the game between Ken Sutcliffe and Bob Geritg, (for those who are not aware, Bob was a member of the Melville side that won the Bedford Bowl in 2005) Bob was down 0-14 and managed to claw his way back into the game and win against a talented Ken Sutcliffe 21-19. A great game and a great comeback indeed.
Doug Eaton defeated Kevin Beaver and will now play Bob Gertig for a semi-final place.

January 19, 2010
The Osborne Park Club Championship Singles commenced Sunday 17th January on a nice warm day with the temperature reaching 42.9 around 3pm. Play was continuous throught out the day
This year it was decided to play sectional play with three to a section which meant each player took a turn to mark a game,
There was a major upset and none bigger than the win by the Green Keeper Richard Cox who defeated a former Country Week singles champ Kevin Pickering. However it was not Richard who won the section, that went to Gordon King who beat Richard, then lost
to Kevin Pickering 19-21 to record a +3 shot agg to win the section
Doug Eaton survived a thriller against Martin Swift 21-20 to win his section
Another great game was that between Cliff Guelfi and Grantly Smith playing in the last game of their section. Cliff was down 12-20 and came back from there to level the score at 20-20 During the fightback Grantly held game four times only to see Cliff get out of jail each time
The last end was a beauty with Grantley holding shot and Cliff with the last bowl of the game producing the winner after attacking the head, the Jack went up in the air and landed between a couple of bowls, it was a very very close measure in Cliff's favour
Defending Champ John Goddard cruised his thru to the next round as did the runner up David Rankin, Gary Caffell, Scott Edmonds, Grant Nicol all who are among the favourites to be in contention to play in the final
