The final of the club pairs was completed today. In a truly great game of bowls the spectators were lucky to see John Goddard at his best in the final, one of the greatest displays you could ever wish to see.
The game started out with David Rankin on fire, there was nothing he couldn't do and forged to a handy 5 shot lead after 3 ends, He and Dave Appleton were looking good. Not that John and Gordon were playing poorly, but the precision of Dave was uncanny.
Disaster struck on the 4th end for Dave and Dave. John and Gordon picked up a 7 to lead 7/5 , (I missed it and and so did President Cliff Guelfi.) Well it didn't upset the two Dave's who pegged it back to lead on the 8th end 8/7.
After 8 ends had been completed John and Gordon had won only one end and that might tell how dominant Dave Rankin was. Once again we must say John and Gordon were bowling their backsides off, John in particular.
On the 11th end it was 10/10 with 8 ends to the two Dave's, 3 ends to John and Gordon
The 12th end of the game was the turning point of this contest and up to this part of the game I would have had Dave Rankin slightly ahead of John Goddard by a bee's knee but both were so good.
From here on if it was possible to lift another cog, then John Goddard did so, and simply burnt off every player in the game
with pinpoint draws or any over the draw shots he would play and on any hand. It was masterful stuff.
The score proceeded to 19/10 in John and Gordon's favour, and as they say in a song I know, it was a case of "Turn out the lights, the party's over" because it was evident that the two Dave's had run their race and were not in the hunt to win from that position, tho they tried valiantly to so
This is only the second loss in competitive bowls for Dave Rankin this year, he is without doubt a gun and must be included in the State side when it is picked and he must have a back end position.
There are no more words to use to describe the game John Goddard played, it is easy to understand how he has won two State Singles Titles and two Rosenthal medals
Gordon King and Dave Appleton played well in the game but the honours definitely belonged to the two skippers.
This is the first time Gordon King has won a pairs title at Osborne Park and was thrilled to bits after the game
and gave John all the credit.

Results of the morning games saw a cliff hanger with the Brothers Caffell playing Dave Rankin and Dave Apppleton, with the last end to be played saw the score 18/17 in favour of Dave R and A then they finished the game off with a big three.
The other semi saw John Goddard and Gordon King win 16/8 against Bruce Fullagar and Doug Eaton.
