REPORT ON ‘ONE WHITE’ 2007 / 2008.
PREVIEW - ROUND SEVENTEEN
Even with the very impressive dominance by Dalkeith-Nedlands and the failure to deliver by Gosnells, this One White competition has still delivered fantastic interest right to the very end. What will be the final order of the top four and who will actually fill 2nd, 3rd and 4th place? Who will survive? Who will go? The end result hasn’t been finalised to its full extent by any means. Those in the mix will have to hold their nerve and those out of the mix will still want to have a say in proceedings so be complacent at your peril.
LAST WEEK
Dalkeith-Nedlands in another awesome display powered 7½ points from Leeming who we should remember were in Premier Division last year; Yokine wouldn’t have been happy with only getting the big ‘3’ against Kardinya by any stretch of the imagination, while the Kardi boys are saying ‘halleluiah brother’ it’s about time we got a clear aggregate even this way after their three drawn games; I thought Morley were going to do the Aussie equivalent of the ‘Haka’ they were so determined in their pre-match huddle to get all 8 points but had to be content with 7 against a fighting Gosnells; Thornlie did exceptionally well to just grab the majority against the cornered lion at Bassendean; and Mosman Park in an unbelievable result yet again hung on to win by a solitary shot in getting 5½ points against The Bay who refuse to stop breathing.
Dalkeith-Nedlands 87 (7½) defeated Leeming 70 (½)
Kardinya 84 (5) defeated Yokine 81 (3)
Morley 85 (7) defeated Gosnells 60 (1)
Thornlie 80 (6) defeated Bassendean 77 (2)
Mosman Park 84 (5½) defeated Safety Bay 83 (2½)
THIS WEEK’S – PICKS OF THE BUNCH:
Thornlie (4th) v’s Mosman Park (5th):
Without doubt the game of the round and it has the potential to be an absolute ripper. Mosman Park are the only team left in One White who are realistically facing the big three possible results in that they can make the finals, just survive in White, or actually be relegated. Make no mistake about it - Mosman Park win this match and its ‘game on’ to fit 4 teams into three finals positions. Of course if Mosman Park lose then the final four will be set in stone and it will only be a matter of where Yokine, Morley and Thornlie will sit in relation to each other for positions 2nd, 3rd & 4th. I have a feeling that Mosman Park might want to arrange some practice on carpet.
Dalkeith-Nedlands (1st) v’s Kardinya (6th):
Kardinya have done really well over the last five weeks to record 2 wins and 3 drawn games but Dalkeith-Nedlands at home will obviously be the ultimate test of their resolve to fight off relegation. It may still be possible for Kardinya to survive in One White despite a lose but that would mean relying on other results and in that case every point they can get out from this game will be important. As I said last week, the result won’t impact whatsoever on the big lead by Dalkeith-Nedlands but with the finals just around the corner confident winning form is what the Silvertails will want to maintain and I can’t see them taking it easy or flirting with their impressive winning record and form.
Morley (3rd) v’s Bassendean (7th):
Morley were missing a couple of regular players who were away on holidays last week and if I heard correctly they may be missing one or two players with injury for some of their last matches. If that is the case then this match against the Basso boys could loom as a danger game and one that could possibly bring about their demise even at this late stage of the season depending on other results. For Basso, I suppose it’s still mathematically possible for them to avoid relegation and I would expect the Basso boys to be holding on to that vary slim hope with both hands.
LADDER:
Dalkeith-Nedlands 103; Yokine 76½; Morley 75; Thornlie 74; Mosman Park 64; Kardinya 61; Bassendean 58½; Leeming 58; Safety Bay 48; Gosnells 21½.
‘My Predictions’:
Last week 3 from 5. For the season a (50½ – 29½) winning rate.

Jason Bryan (Sk) Roy Sharp Gordon Bradford Peter Charkiewicz
Trevor Gibbs (Sk) Maurice Crabb Dean Calvo Stuart Masterson
Kevin Bairstow (Sk) Peter Hodgson Richard Golding Trevor Simons
Gosnells versed Morley:
The sun was shining and Brett was smiling, the kid was back and Brett was again on track.
Ah yes – all was as it should be back in the quiet world at the Gossy railway tracks where the only thing missing is an airstrip to relieve the congestion at Jandakot airport and make a bowler’s surroundings even more serene than it is now.
That said, Morley came with business in mind and left with 7 points and in so doing wrestled back 3rd position from Thornlie. However to their credit the Gossy boys showed good fight and made the Morley rinks earn their 3 wins.
Brett Holland’s rink V’s Bruce Walter’s rink:
The spring had returned to Brett’s step and purpose to his bowls and I was quickly relegated back to playing in second position to make way for the true owner and best exponent of the orange lead bowls. Mind you against tough competition a good team effort was essential and Mike Kelly and I also played our part. As indicated we got away to a flyer to lead 10 to 2 after five ends; 16 to 6 after eleven; before Bruce Walter and his boys spurred on by the other rink’s verbal support came back hard to be only 17 to 13 down after 16 ends; but we hung on to win 21 to 16 and picked up the only point for Gossy.
Trevor Gibbs rink V’s Wayne Neilson’s rink:
A great effort by Trevor and his boys Maurice Crabb, Dean Calvo and Stuart Masterson (lead) to take it right up to this Morley rink. It was 4 to 5 after six ends; our boys picked up a 6 on the ninth end to lead 10 to 8; 15 to 15 after fifteen and 18 to 18 after nineteen; however the Morley boys weren’t to be denied and picked up the last two ends to win 18 to 23. While Glen Britten had a great tussle with our lead, it wasn’t hard to tell who played a most telling game for Morley when the name ‘SHERRO’ was being yelled in glowing terms for most of the afternoon.
Kevin Bairstow’s rink V’s Robbie Urquhart’s rink:
The Bear and his boys also put up a good fight. They were down 4 to 5 after six ends; 7 to 10 after eleven ends; 11 to 15 after seventeen ends; to eventually lose 12 to 19. I didn’t receive any info on who played well etc.
Jason Bryan’s rink V’s Peter Aungier’s rink:
This Gosnells rink contained two of our club’s most seasoned bowlers in Gordon Bradford and Roy Sharp. About two thirds into this game I passed Gordon at the water container and he told me that the Morley skipper, Peter Aungier, was having a blinder and was almost single handedly destroying their efforts to win the rink. After the game Roy specifically chased me up to tell me that in about 30 years of bowling it was one of the most impressive display of dominance by a skipper he had ever seen. He reckoned that Peter was directly responsible for pinching at least 25 shots from them in either converting or cutting down their shots. Very high praise indeed Peter.
This Week:
No changes at this stage although Maurice Crabb will probably come out.
On the Side:
Congratulation to Ray Roper and Dave Newton on winning our club’s championship pairs. In the semi-finals Ray and Dave came from behind to beat Jason Bryan and David Downey by one shot after an extra end was required and then beat Brett Holland and Andrew Hay-Hendry in the final.
Martin’s Prediction: LEEMING.

A report from a contact at Kardinya is as follows:
Kardinya versed Yokine:
In yet another nail-biting finish (aren’t we good at those!), we pulled off a great win against the second-placed Doggies, winning the aggregate by three shots. With a large number of spectators watching the last few ends, there were mutterings of whether there was going to be yet another draw! However, for a very pleasant change, we rallied and earned ourselves five most valuable points to, at least temporarily, crawl out of the relegation zone.
We held a useful aggregate lead for much of the game, thanks to Rob Foy’s inspired rink, but the Doggies came back at us with plenty of growl, and the lead chopped and changed numerous times during the last six ends. Holding the aggregate by two shots, and holding one shot on Dave Wood’s rink, it came down to Rod Heaton’s last bowl of the last end and, fortunately for us, Rod’s drive went wide of its mark to give us the three shot win. A few eyebrows were raised after the selection of the team last Monday night, but full credit to the Selectors for their foresight in helping to turn our fortunes around.
Rob Foy versus Jamie O’Keefe
Rob’s rink of Daryl Radford (Third), Ian Hastings (Second) and Gordon Manuel (Lead) had an absolute day out, winning 36-13 over Jamie O’Keefe’s team and well and truly helping us get those important four aggregate points. This had been the rink that had caused us a few problems over the last three games, but all credit to the Selectors for revamping the team. All four of our guys played really well and didn’t really give the Yokine boys a sniff.
Rick Flintoff versus Scott Edmonds
Rick’s rink of Shaun McCormack (Third), Dave Phillips (Second) and Scott Jaggs (Lead) went down 22-17 to Scotty Edmonds’ team. We started absolutely abysmally being 13-1 down after seven ends, due to the old bowls adage of not having enough bowls in the head. However, we showed a lot of character to dig deep and claw our way back into the game to only lose by five shots. After a slow start, Scott rallied to lead really well and, together with Dave, formed a solid duo up front. Rick had a tough opponent in Scott, but could hold his head high at the end of the game.

Geoff Gould versus Alan Davis
Geoff’s rink of Tony Cocodis (Third), Rex Sweet (Second) and Owen Sweetman (Lead) had a rare loss, going down 21-14 to Alan’s team. With our boys bowling well, we were up 10-8 at about the halfway mark, but Alan turned the game around almost single-handedly by continually putting down a lot of telling bowls. Geoff’s record is still an outstanding 13/3 win/loss ratio.
Tony Cocodis Kardinya (pictured) has been a very good player over the years for Kardinya
Dave Wood versus Rod Heaton
Dave’s rink of John Smith (Third), Steve Vinci (Second) and Les Phillips (Lead) lost 25 -17 to Rod’s team. It was a solid performance by our team against a side containing a top skipper and continually being given a great start by Bill Morrison and John Bils. Not a bad start for Dave in his first game as Skipper in One White.
THIS WEEK:
The Selectors have made no changes to the team for this week’s away fixture against Dalkeith/Nedlands, following the stirring win against Yokine last fixture.
We have not lost an aggregate for the last six games since that unfortunate loss to Gosnells at the start of the second round, so we can go into this match with a great deal of confidence. We beat Dalkeith/Nedlands in both home and away games last season and lost narrowly in the first semi-final, so they will no doubt be out to gain revenge for those performances.
With an incredible final two week’s of fixtures in One White to define the four bottom teams (and the top four), every point now becomes valuable.
The teams are as above.
Martin’s Prediction: DALKEITH-NEDLANDS.

A report from a contact at Thornlie is as follows:
Bassendean V Thornlie
Round 1 Basso by 3 shots - Round 2 Thornlie by 3 shots.
Played on a very nice piece of Santa Anna running around 15.5 seconds it was a pleasure to turn up and play. Games against Bassendean are always played in great spirit and Saturday was no exception.
John Lynch always gives 100% and his boys helped his rink to their only rink win for the day outscoring the "Rink of Reagan" by 7 shots.
"Ya Gotta get it up Pohe" was the Ravens leading light scoring a 10 shot victory over Marcel Heruer's rink. Paul and the boys did it well and were comfortable all day.
The other two rinks although with their noses in front for most of the day managed a draw each.
Bubbles Vaughan endured a little bad luck on one end. Bubbles reached the jack to move it to advantage only to watch it crash into a close back bowl and move forward. When the smoke cleared he was 6 shots down. That got Justin and his men back into the game and with Justin drawing shot with his last bowl the score board read 23 all.
The Big Fella played the "Little Fella" Craig Greenhaigh. Hava Chat, Doc Kimble and Bruiser all played very well for the greater part of the game and their efforts were reflected in a small but useful lead on the scoreboard. However going into the last end The Big Feela was only 1 shot up. We held a solitary shot for 15 of the last 16 bowls and had another 5 third shots. The "Little Fella" played a running shot with his last bowl to chip Thornlie bowl sideways leaving Bassendean 1 up and looking at a 15 all draw.
Still 6 points from an away game against a good outfit is always a welcomed return for effort. The Ravens have won 5 out of their last 6 games with their only loss being to The Silvertails down in Rich Street, in Richville.
Mosmans at home after the Easter break is a huge game for both clubs and The Ravens can't wait for that encounter to arrive.

MOSMAN PARK
John Rainoldi (Sk) Lindsay Hicks Jarrad Rainoldi Ron Trowbridge
Steve Withers (Sk) Mark Simpson Hawke John Deery
Lester Mortimer (Sk) Wyn Ferris Steve Novak David Teague
Rad Anderson (Sk) Glenn Ellis Tom O’Neill Tom Reid
A report from a contact at Mosman Park is as follows:
Mosman Park took on Safety Bay on their own dunghill desperate for a win against a side they should beat on paper. Sport however is not played on paper and a battle took place right down to the last bowl. Ron Trowbridge and the club’s best player John Rainoldi were late withdrawals for the home side and were replaced by Mal Monteath and Ian Briggs.
Steve Withers took on the unpredictable Matt Massari and after trailing early Withers and Co put their foot down to record an easy 10 shot victory. Withers continued his stellar form and late inclusion Mossies stalwart Ian Briggs had a blinder.
Lindsey Hicks skipped in the absence of Rainoldi and was locked in a tight encounter all day with Graeme Scott’s four. After trailing early Scott’s rink fought back to record a five shot win. Young gun Ryan Hawke who was blooded as a third for the game played well and showed he may well be a handy alternative up the line in years to come for Mosman Park.
Lester Mortimer with Steve Novak as his new third took on Ray Beard’s rink and after trailing early staged a great come back to snatch a draw. Mortimer played another great game and as he always does leading from the front.
The last rink left on the green was Raad Anderson’s four who played the Holmes lead rink. Playing both their rinks last end and the last end of the match Mossies trailed overall by one shot. With one bowl left in his hand and one possibly two down on the head Anderson drove, picked the jack up clean as a whistle into the drink for two shots and a Mosman Park aggregate victory. Holmes rink snatched the rink point however winning a tight one 21 – 17.
Although still a possible top four chance, Mossies are still not 100% out of relegation zone and the club has been very lucky in winning all their tight games this year. A couple of losses in those games and much uglier year for the club may well have resulted.
THIS WEEK:
No reported changes.
Martin’s Prediction: THORNLIE.
