REPORT ON ‘ONE WHITE’ 2007 / 2008.
PREVIEW - ROUND FIFTEEN
We know for sure that Dalkeith-Nedlands will be promoted and Gosnells will be relegated. Yokine, Morley and Thornlie will, at the very least, survive in One White.
Leeming, Mosman Park, Kardinya, Bassendean and Safety Bay all remain in the mix to join Gosnells as the other three teams to be relegated, however, as we get closer to the end of the season a couple of these five teams may well emerge from the pack to not only challenge for the finals but also for promotion.
A fantastic contest sees so many teams still in contention to be either promoted or relegated.
Last Weeks Results:
Dalkeith-Nedlands powered over 3rd placed Thornlie to pick up 8 points by 30 shots. Yokine didn’t have it all their own way but still secured 6 points over Bassendean. Morley got things back on track with a very convincing 7½ win over Leeming in what was supposed to be tight contest. For the second week in a row Kardinya were involved in a drawn game this time at home against Mosman Park; and Safety Bay as expected accounted for the depleted Gosnells outfit who unfortunately are just marking time in this division.
Bassendean 71 (2) defeated by Yokine 101 (6)
Dalkeith-Nedlands 93 (8) defeated Thornlie 63 (0)
Gosnells 51 (1) defeated by Safety Bay 91 (7)
Kardinya 79 (4) drew with Mosman Park 79(4)
Leeming 57 (½) defeated by Morley 86 (7½)
Picks of the Bunch:
As I referred to in my opening, the top four are clear cut at the minute so the main focus and interest in the competition until things change (or the finals arrive) is on the bottom of the ladder to see who can survive in One White.
Leeming (5th) v’s Kardinya (7th): Despite their positions on the ladder this is my game of the week. Like or loath the ‘four team relegation rule’ this is nevertheless where the interest and impact is at the minute.
A huge game in the scheme of the season for both clubs (and a couple of others) and this is the game I’d be going to watch if I wasn’t playing myself. In their last three games Kardinya had a win against Bassendean and then drew with both Morley and Mosman Park; Leeming had a win against Safety Bay but were then belted by both Thornlie and Morley.
Having said that, Leeming have had similar lapses and have been able to bounce back beautifully, while Kardinya have shown superb fighting spirit with two of their last three games away from their home surface. What’s the odds of Kardinya having three drawn games in a row?
Yokine (2nd) v’s Mosman Park (6th):
Yokine obviously want to stay in 2nd position and could still do so even with a loss. The main focus of this game is obviously with Mosman Park as their life or death in this division could hinge on this result. Mossies currently sit in 6th place being one game off the relegation four, however a loss will definitely put them in the relegation mix and could see them a low as 8th place (3rd last) on the ladder. At the home of the Doggies Mosman Park will have to dig very deep indeed to secure a win.
Bassendean (8th) v’s Safety Bay (9th):
It is possible for the winner of this game to jump as high as 6th place and thereby be out of the relegation four for the minute such is the delicate state of the ladder. The fact remains that both teams have an uphill battle to stay in this division even with a win but for the loser it will be practically ‘mission impossible’ and the ‘fat lady’ will join them for an after game drink
Morley (3rd) v’s Dalkeith-Nedlands (1st):
Even though this is 1st verses 3rd, and that Morley is the only team to have beaten Dalkeith-Nedlands all year, and that the game is being played at Morley, I still wasn’t convinced that this would be one of the games of the round. (I’m still not really). However I was speaking with one of the Morley One White players on the weekend (who shall remain nameless) who is so confident and positive about taking it right up to the competition leaders this Saturday that I have added it as one of my ‘picks of the bunch’.
Based on what I was told by this Morley player they won’t even hear of not being promoted back up to Premier Division for next season and don’t see either Yokine of Thornlie as a threat to that prospect at all. Morley will need to turn around a very ‘unimpressive’ record at home this season to cause an upset but in reality the result won’t impact on the composition of the top four in the slightest.
LADDER:
Dalkeith-Nedlands 90; Yokine 71½; Morley 66; Thornlie 61; Leeming 53½; Mosman Park 52½; Kardinya 52; Bassendean 48½; Safety Bay 45½; Gosnells 19½.
‘My Predictions’:
Last week 3 from 5. For the season (44 – 26) winning rate.
LEEMING V’s KARDINYA
1st Round – Kardinya 88(7) def Leeming 73(1)
LEEMING
Danny Comrie (Sk) Gary Ford Peter Middleton Steve Harris
Don Munro (Sk) Phil Dobie Tom Glendinning Ryan Havercroft
Lindsay Strange (Sk) Alan Pryce Gary Pemberton Dennis Anderson
Peter Morris (Sk) Bill West Ian Ashworth Ray Morley
A report from the Leeming contact is as follows:
A very substandard performance by Leeming against Morley last Saturday at home. We certainly didn’t play well as a team and all our rinks were down on form.
No game this week. Kardinya at home the week after will be a crucial game for both clubs in the fight to avoid relegation let alone make the four.
Peter MORRIS’s rink. What a game. The greatest margin at any time was 5. Leeming up by 4 on end 4, scores tied on six, Morley up by 5 on end 14 and scores tied on end 20. On the last end Peter drew shot with his last bowl leaving the Morley skip with his last bowl. A nicely weighted running shot hit Pete’s shot bowl in the guts, pushed in through the head, stayed around to give Morley 2 and the rink win. Bugger.
Don MUNRO’s rink. Another great battle. Leeming got out to a 5 shot lead by the 11th end but were outscored 11 to 6 in the closing 10 ends to finish up with a draw. Bugger. We were 2 up going into the last but failed to get one close. The Morley skip had a chance of victory but his last bowl came up short. So considering the other results a draw was OK.
Lindsay STRANGE’s rink. An unusually slow start for the boys being 10 to 1 down after 7 ends and 12 down after 13. To their credit they outscored Morley 9 to 3 in the closing 7 ends but the damage had already been done.
Danny COMRIE’s rink. Just one of those days
This Week:
The team for this week’s match is as above.

KARDINYA
Tony Cocodis (Sk) John Smith, Steve Vinci Les Phillips
Rick Flintoff (Sk) Shaun McCormack David Phillips Scott Jaggs
Ian Hastings (Sk) Rob Foy Dave Wood Gordon Manuel
Geoff Gould (Sk) Daryl Radford Rex Sweet Owen Sweetman
A report from a contact at Kardinya is as follows:
Do we know how to get ourselves into tight finishes! We’ve had now drawn two aggregates in two consecutive weeks, and again let another slip through our fingers when success was begging last Saturday against Mosman Park. Going into the very last end of the game, and holding a three shot lead on aggregate, we again thought that a 6-2 narrow victory was ours, but we dropped three shots to only square the aggregate. Let’s hope that the loss of those extra four points, which were for the taking in those two games, does not come back to haunt us! We could so easily have been on the brink of being in the top four.
Rick Flintoff versus Raad Anderson
Rick’s rink of Shaun McCormack (Third), David Phillips (Second) and Scott Jaggs (Lead) had a tremendous 25-11 win over Raad’s rink, giving Rick his second consecutive win as a One White Skipper. Rick declared his rink’s win as a real team effort, and he can be proud of his up-shot on the 20th end when he turned four shots down to two shots up with the last bowl of the end.
Geoff Gould versus Lester Mortimer
Geoff’s rink of Daryl Radford (Third), Rex Sweet (Second) and Owen Sweetman (Lead) continued on their winning way, having a narrow 21-16 win over Lester’s team. Trailing narrowly at the halfway point of the game, a splendid leading performance by Owen played a major role in turning the tide. However, the winning margin could have been so bigger if Lester had not saved his side on many occasions, including one end when he drew shot with his last bowl when eight shots down! That makes a great 12/2 win/loss ratio for Geoff’s rink for the season.
Tony Cocodis versus Steve Withers
Tony’ rink of John Smith (Third), Steve Vinci (Second) and Les Phillips (Lead) lost 22-19 to Steve’s team. Down for most of the game, we fought back well to lead 19-15 only to drop seven shots on the last two ends – ouch! Tony and John fought valiantly all day.
Ian Hastings versus John Rainoldi
Ian’s rink of Rob Foy (Third), Dave Wood (Second) and Gordon Manuel (Lead) went down 30-14 to John’s team. Ian described his team’s performance as lack lustre, with the defeat proving rather costly for the aggregate. It was Ian’s rink that was involved in the dramatic last end.
This Week:
The Selectors have made no changes for next week’s away fixture against Leeming. They have shown faith in the same sixteen that have picked up a valuable 15 points from our last three fixtures. This is a big game for us because we can jump into 5th place on the ladder if we beat Leeming and another result goes our way. Having said that, every game is a virtual Grand Final from now on! Our fate very much lies in our own hands.
Martin’s Prediction: Do I have to? – um, KARDINYA.

A report from a contact at Thornlie is as follows:
Thornlie V's Dalkeith-Nedlands.
Thornlie completed round 14 on Friday night (15/2) and the result was extremely poor. The Silvertails handed out a bowls lesson to most of our rinks and ran out comfortable winners picking up 8 premiership points along the way. Still their hospitality was great and the atmosphere was enjoyable and perhaps more games should be played on a Friday to allow others within the clubs to turn out and barrack or simply enjoy the opportunity to watch a good game unfold whilst having a beer or two.
Well done Dalkeith.
This Week: The Sth East Derby
One is 4th the other is last (with a bullet) - who will win? that is a question on everyone's lips.
The writer has had bad form in recent years when suggesting to his team mates that a game against bottom dwellers is fraught with danger. Innaloo did us 7/1 two years ago when they were on the bottom - does history repeat itself?
On paper Thornlie look quite strong and playing at home - should win 6/2 or better on Saturday. Gosnells on the other hand with 1 win and 13 losses are due for a win - the question remain will it be against the old neighbour - The Ravens - time will tell and the Thornlie mob are red hot for a win.
Should be a good day and we always know the beer at is always as cold as a mother-in-law's kiss - about the same as the reception Gossy's can expect on Saturday afternoon.

GOSNELLS

Jason Bryan (Sk) Roy Sharp Gordon Bradford Peter Charkiewicz
Trevor Gibbs (Sk) Colin Watters Terry Hudson Stuart Masterson
Kevin Bairstow (Sk) Peter Hodgson Richard Golding Trevor Simons
Congratulation to our young star, Jason Bryan, who was finally given a rink and against the odds grabbed a one point win on his ‘One White Skipper’ debut. This move was long overdue and unfortunately comes at an unenviable time when our rinks are considerably weakened by the unavailability of so many players. This fact only makes Jason’s rink win last week even more impressive. Having lost so many aggregates by small margins this season one can only wonder if it would still have been a foregone relegation conclusion for us had this move been made earlier because make no mistake this young man is a star.
I happened to play on the rink next to the Bear last game and couldn’t help but have a bit of a chuckle at him struggling to remember who was in his rink;- “play here Ray, um Bob, oh shit it’s not Bob either – who the bloody hell is it this week, um Dick yeah sorry Dick, play here Dick”. It’s been a bit like that for us all of late Bear.
Jason Bryan’s rink V’s G Hallum’s rink:
Well done to this rink of Jason Bryan (sk) Roy Sharp Gordon Bradford and Peter Charkiewicz who showed great fighting qualities to grab our only point of the day. Our boys got away to a good start to lead 6 to 1 after six ends; 11 to 3 after eleven ends before The Bay fought back hard to be 11 to 11 after fifteen ends before they hit the front to lead 11 to 15 after 17 ends.
Our boys then rallied to win 3 of the last four ends to grab a one point win 18 to 17.
------------------------------------Jason Bryan
----------------------
Jason Bryan has just moved into the skippers role for Gosnells and celebrated a win in his first game. Young Jason has an enormous future ahead of him
Brett Holland’s rink V’s G. Scott’s rink:
This was a much closer game than the score card indicates and although both skippers had good games, Graham Scott for the Bay on the day was the difference between the two evenly balanced sides. It was 3 to 3 after three ends; 5 to 11 after seven ends; 10 to 15 after thirteen ends; 13 to 18 after nineteen ends to eventually win by 7 shots 13 to 20.
Welcome back to Mike Kelly after many weeks away recovering from a broken bone in his foot.
Trevor Gibbs rink V’s A. Holmes rink:
Our boys were under the pump from the start to be 1 to 8 after five ends; 5 to 13 after eleven ends; our boys kept trying and got back to 9 to 15 after sixteen ends but the Bay then ran away to win 10 to 25.
Kevin Bairstow’s rink V’s R. Beard’s rink:
The Bay started without us to lead 0 to 7 after six ends; 4 to 13 after eleven end; then like on Gibbsey’s rink the Bear’s boys kept trying and got it back to 10 to 16 after sixteen ends before the Bay emphatically won the last 5 ends to win 10 to 29.
This Week:
Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse – ‘the kids out’. David Downey joins those unavailable for this week - arwell on the bright side it won’t cost me as much for the after match drinks this week.
Martin’s Prediction: GOSNELLS - (because I’ll never pick Thornlie in our derby and also wouldn’t give Big Bad Jim McKenzie the pleasure).

MOSMAN PARK
John Rainoldi (Sk) Lindsay Hicks Jarrad Rainoldi Ron Trowbridge
Steve Withers (Sk) Mark Simpson Hawke John Deery
Lester Mortimer (Sk) Wyn Ferris Steve Novak David Teague
Rad Anderson (Sk) Glenn Ellis Tom O’Neill Tom Reid
A report from a contact at Mosman Park is as follows:
Mosman Park travelled south to Kardinya knowing that the winner of their clash would have some handy breathing space above teams fighting to save relegation. After tweaking their rinks slightly Mosman Park got the early jump on the home side and looked in control for much of the contest until a spirited Kardinya fight back saw a great finish unfold.
John Rainoldi with a new third in Lindsey Hicks, his son Jarrad and Ron Trowbridge were always well in control in their battle with Ian Hastings rink, eventually running out 30 – 14 winners. Next door Lester Mortimer’s four were locked in a close battle all day with Geoff Gould with the later getting over the line by five. Both Mortimer and Gould had a wonderful skipper’s dual with both playing brilliant bowls.
Newly promoted skipper Raad Anderson and his new look rink of Glenn Ellis, Tom O’Neill and Tom Reid battled hard all day but were no match for Flintoff’s four eventually loosing 25 – 11 with the always reliable Steve Withers quartet charging late to beat Tony Cocodis 22 – 19.
With one end to play Mosman Park found themselves three behind on the aggregate with the Rainoldi vs Hastings dual the only one remaining on the green. Rainoldi crossed over two up, sat a bowl to make three and with Hastings not disturbing the head it was up to Rainoldi to draw within 60 centre metres for a fourth counter and a Mossie victory. Rainoldi drew down rolled into a pack containing two of the counters and fell in the opposite direction to the jack narrowly out of the measure, resulting in a draw for both sides.
This Week: No reported changes.
