REPORT ON ‘ONE WHITE’ 2007 / 2008.
PREVIEW - ROUND FOURTEEN
Last Weeks Results:
Dalkeith-Nedlands - we can still see your dust but it’s getting further away after you picked up the majority of points against Safety Bay. Yokine had a heart to heart with each other after their loss to Dalkeith-Nedlands and amongst other things decided they wanted maximum points against Gosnells and got them.
Thornlie turned what I thought would be a really tight match into one way traffic against Leeming in grabbing all the points on offer by 30 shots. Morley and Kardinya had the first equal split decision of the season in picking up 4 points each from their clash at Morley. Which brings us to Bassendean, I correctly said last week that the Basso Lions were ‘looking down the barrel’, well they were (and are) but they stared that barrel down all the way to Mosman Park and pulled off a big win to the tune of 7½ points thankyou very much.
Morley 81(4) drew with Kardinya 81(4)
Mosman Park 80(½) defeated by Bassendean 90(7½)
Safety Bay 76(1) defeated by Dalkeith-Nedlands 84(7)
Thornlie 85(8) defeated Leeming 55(0)
Yokine 98(8) defeated Gosnells 68(0)
This Week’s – Picks of the Bunch:
Leeming (5th) v’s Morley (4th):
For the second week in a row Leeming in 5th place will have to play the team sitting in 4th place, the only difference is that this week it will be Morley, not Thornlie. A win is so important for both sides. Morley win and they get very important breathing space in the top four, if Leeming lose they will be in the relegation mix.
Kardinya (7th) v’s Mosman Park (6th):
Kardinya have done pretty well in the last two weeks when playing away to pick up the majority of points at Bassendean and a half share at Morley to keep their hopes of staying in One White alive. However, Mosman Park is the very team they have to pass to avoid relegation. On the other hand Kardinya is the very team that Mosman Park has to stay in front of to avoid the relegation four.
Bassendean (8th) v’s Yokine (2nd):
Bassendean did so well to avoid a bullet last week at Mosman Park but there’s no relief available. The two teams in front of them, the two they have to pass to stay alive in One White, play each other this week so in-road are begging but only with a win. Very important breathing space is available to Yokine with this win.
LADDER:
Dalkeith-Nedlands 82; Yokine 65½; Thornlie 61; Morley 58½; Leeming 53; Mosman Park 48½; Kardinya 48; Bassendean 46½; Safety Bay 38½; Gosnells 18½.
‘My Predictions’:
Last week 4 from 5. For the season (41 – 24) winning rate.

A report from a Yokine contact is as follows.
DOGGIES PUT THE PAST BEHIND THEM
Yokine Doggies put their differences and their last four games behind them and started a fresh against Gosnells. The Dogs started well on a perfect 16 second green and got the jump on Gosnells.
Alan Davis’s rink made an early run on Kevin Bairstow’s rink before the Bairstow four rallied and later scored a seven to claim a good lead. Davis’s rink to their credit won the last ends of the game to finish in front by a single shot.
Scott Edmonds played the inform Brett Holland (the new Gosnells club singles champion) who has some young talent and a good scribe before him. Holland’s encouragement lasted to the end of the game but on this occasion the experience of Edmonds’ team won the day. The Edmonds rink gave special mention to Tony Kay’s outstanding game as 2nd.
Heaton’s rink was solid and with Ian Cooper playing some telling bowls held off Trevor Gibbs. Cooper had plenty to do as the Gosnells lead bowled the lights out. It was one of the great lead games to be played all year.
Billy (Van) Morrison (Yokine) - pictured here because no one ever takes his photo.
O’Keefe’s rink had a tight game all day but picked up a valuable 5 in the closing stages to keep the Gosnells team at bay. O’Keefe had his lead, Wayne Coffey, do a great job of rolling the jack to the length the Doggies wanted and this was a telling tactic.
This Week:
No Changes
The Dogs have a hard run to the finals and it starts this week when they travel to Bassendean. Bassendean have the ability to beat anyone in the competition and know their season is on the line this Saturday.
It will be a hard game for the dogs and they know how important this game will be for their season.
Martin’s Prediction: YOKINE.

A report from a contact at Thornlie is as follows:
Thornlie V's Leeming
All the points stayed at Thornlie on Saturday and the margin was always comfortable from the halfway point to home.
The "Rink of Reagan" set the pattern for the day with a comfortable 13 shot win over Strange and company. "Mr. Perfect" Ray Halse and John "The Phantom" Walker had great games and played their part in this significant result.
Glyn "Bubbles" Vaughan and his merry men toughed out a hard day at the office to finish 4 shots ahead. This game had been a low scoring affair all day - with Thornlie taking the honours in a very tight fight.
Paul "ya gotta get it up" Pohe and his band of merry men had a struggle, with consistent bowls hard to find from either side. Still the Thornlie boys stayed close all day running out 5 shots the better on the 21st end.
Big Jim McKenzie drew Danny Comrie for the second time this year. Leeming helped themselves to 5 shots on the first end, not the start The Ravens were looking for. Still perseverance and the odd good bowl stood the home rink in good stead running out comfortable winners by 8 shots.
The prize for The Ravens was a birth in third spot albeit that may be short lived.
Martin’s Prediction: DALKEITH-NEDLANDS.
GOSNELLS V’s SAFETY BAY
1st Round – Mosman Park 69(1) def by Bassendean 86(7)
GOSNELLS
Brett Holland (Sk) Gordon Bradford Martin Downey David Downey
Jason Bryan (Sk) Roy Sharp Mike Kelly Peter Charkiewicz
Trevor Gibbs (Sk) Colin Watters Terry Hudson Stuart Masterson
Kevin Bairstow (Sk) Peter Hodgson Richard Golding Trevor Simons
On The Side:
Congratulation to Brett Holland on winning the Gosnells Men’s Singles Championship.
Congratulations to the Yokine Doggies on a good win. The game was played in good spirit.
As for us, we tried but were weakened from within which resulted in a predictable reaction. There were several changes to the rinks reported in my last report; several more after my report and the teams were posted; several more at the death knock last Saturday, and there’s several more this week.
A song by Roy Orbison springs immediately to mind – ‘Communication Breakdown’.
It’s been decided by those who have the power to do so that we won’t even threaten another aggregate in One White this season.
Kevin Bairstow’s rink V’s the Alan Davis rink:
The Gossy boys on this rink, Kevin Bairstow (Sk) Peter Hodgson Ray Tierney and Trevor Simons should be proud of themselves for putting up a great fight against the rink of Alan Davis. They were down 1 to 11 after seven ends but fought back beautifully to be 12 to 13 after twelve ends. Our boys then picked up 10 shots in two ends to be up 23 to 17 after seventeen ends. It was then the doggies turn to fight back and they did so extremely well to win the last four ends and run out one point winners 23 to 24.
Alan Corby’s rink V’s Jamie O’Keefe’s rink:
Alan Corby made a brief return to the oven to face the doggies at the kennel and a tight arm wrestle ensured – 3 to 4 after five ends; 7 to 7 after ten ends; 11 to 13 after fifteen ends but Jamie O’Keefe and his doggies ran out stronger towards the end to win 16 to 22.
Dan Newton Gosnells (pictured) playing two for Alan Corby "when he's not working up North, a great 'utility' player for Gosnells".
Trevor Gibbs rink V’s Rod Heaton’s rink:
Our boys on this rink told me that Rod Heaton was awesome and was directly responsible for the doggies win in personally accounting for about 17 shots as he constantly added or converted. Mike Rickard, who played yet another great game and for my money has been the ‘Gossy rising star of the year’ said it was the best performance by any skipper he had witnessed all season so credit where credit is due to ‘The Heater’. It was 5 to 7 after five ends; 8 to 13 after ten; 10 to 15 after fourteen ends and they ran out winners by 15 to 25. Well done to our blokes for hanging in there.
Brett Holland’s rink V’s Scott Edmonds rink:
All in all our ‘contributors’ on this rink - Brett Holland(Sk), Jason Bryan and David Downey did pretty well to make a good game of it considering it was three against the doggies four. The Gossy (2nd) was a ‘bystander’ who couldn’t handle the speed of the green and whose ‘contribution’ was to keep score. (Sorry guys). We were down 2 to 6 after five ends; but 7 to 7 after 10 ends; 8 to 9 after the thirteenth end but the doggies then ran away to win 14 to 27. Tony Kay and Scott Edmunds were outstanding.
This Week:
After a number of changes that had already been made last week, Bert Cruickshank, Neville Mulcahy, Roy Sharp and Stuart Masterson were all late withdrawals from the selected side and were replaced by Alan Corby, Trevor Gibbs, Gordon Bradford and Mike Rickard. (Stuart played in our second side and Roy was still injured).
Wholesale changes to the rinks again for this week include:-
OUTs: Alan Corby, Don McColl, Mike Rickard, Ray Tierney and Brian Creswell.
INs: Roy Sharp, Mike Kelly, Stuart Masterson, Richard Golding, Terry Hudson and Peter Charkiewicz.

KARDINYA V’s MOSMAN PARK
1st Round – Kardinya 75(1) def by Mosman Park 81(7)
KARDINYA
Tony Cocodis (Sk) John Smith, Steve Vinci Les Phillips
Rick Flintoff (Sk) Shaun McCormack David Phillips Scott Jaggs
Ian Hastings (Sk) Rob Foy Dave Wood Gordon Manuel
Geoff Gould (Sk) Daryl Radford Rex Sweet Owen Sweetman
A report from a contact at Kardinya is as follows:
Do we know how to get ourselves into tight finishes! We’ve had two drawn aggregates in the space of three weeks, however we threw this one away at the death against Morley. Going into the very last end of the game, and holding a five shot lead on aggregate, we thought that the long drive to Morley had been more than worthwhile.
However disaster struck on that end and we dropped five shots to only square the aggregate, when a 6-2 or even a 7-1 win was virtually ours. It was at the very least highly dramatic, with the last end being replayed after Wayne Nielsen killed the end at the first attempt.
It was about 6.25 pm when the end was completed (perhaps one good reason for daylight saving!), and with the Sunday Times phoning Morley as to where on earth the results were! The rest is now history!
Geoff Gould versus Allan Barron
Geoff’s rink of Daryl Radford (Third), Rex Sweet (Second) and Owen Sweetman (Lead) continued on their winning way, having a comfortable 26-13 win over Allan’s team. Owen lead well, Rex is now most happy in his little “cocoon”, Daryl is in rare form especially after winning the Club Singles, while Skipper Geoff had yet another great day. That makes a great 11/2 win/loss ratio for his rink for the season.
Dave Phillips Kardinya (pictured) doing a great job playing second for Rick Flintoff

Rick Flintoff versus Peter Aungier
Rick’s rink of Shaun McCormack (Third), and David Phillips (Second) and Scott Jaggs (Lead) had a solid 23-20 win over Peter’s rink. In a tight game all day, we went into the last end 20 all. David drew third shot, Shaun cleaned out the two shot bowls with a lovely drive, while Rick magnificently drew the other two shots with his last two bowls of the day. This gave Rick his first rink win in Division One White in only his third game – well done Rick! It was a good solid performance from all four players, with nobody outstanding.
Tony Cocodis versus Robbie Urquhart
Tony’ rink of John Smith (Third), Marc Abonnel (Second) and Les Phillips (Lead) lost 21-18 to Robbie’s team. It was Tony’s rink that was involved in the dramatic last end. We led 14-3 at the halfway mark, but let that lead slip away. Tony drew a sensational shot on the 20th end to give his rink an 18-16 shot lead and the team the winning five shot margin, but lacked the support on that crucial last end.
Ian Hastings versus Bruce Walter
Ian’s rink of Dave Wood (Third), Steve Vinci (Second) and Gordon Manuel (Lead) virtually lost their rink in the first half of the game, before going down 27-14 to Bruce’s side. They dropped a seven on the first end, and were 20-7 down after nine ends. To their credit they did not allow the deficit to blow out any greater than those 13 shots, but it was a little bit of “ouch”.
This Week:
The Selectors have made two changes for this week’s home fixture against Mosman Park. Rob Foy returns to play Third on Ian Hastings’ rink with Dave Wood returning to the Second position, while Steve Vinci moves to Second on Tony Cocodis’ rink. Marc Abonnel was the unlucky player to miss out.
Other results went well for us last week with the defeats of Mosman Park and Leeming, and those two Clubs are our next opponents. This is a big game for us, and we can leapfrog Mossies into 6th place on the ladder if we can get the aggregate. Our destiny lies very much in our own hands.

MOSMAN PARK
John Rainoldi (Sk) Lindsay Hicks Jarrad Rainoldi Ron Trowbridge
Steve Withers (Sk) Mark Simpson Hawke John Deery
Lester Mortimer (Sk) Wyn Ferris Steve Novak David Teague
Rad Anderson (Sk) Glenn Ellis Tom O’Neill Tom Reid
A report from a contact at Mosman Park is as follows:
Mosman Park took on Bassendean on their home ground knowing a win would catapult them into the four, with a loss edging them closer to relegation territory.
For the entire contest little separated each side with no fewer than half a dozen shots the margin.
Lindsey Hicks four got the early jump against John Lynch leading 14 – 2 before Bassendean forged a remarkable comeback to win a close encounter 25 – 24.
In a battle of the big guns Steve Withers played Justin Opie with Withers and Co snaring 3 shots on the last end to snatch a draw. The highlight of this game was the dual between Withers and Opie, with the Mossie skipper in scintillating touch only to often see Opie destroy heads with brilliant driving.
John Rainoldi’s four took on Craig Greenhalgh in a tight encounter which went right down to the wire with the Bassendean boys snatching an impressive two shot victory 20 – 18.
The last match up saw Lester Mortimer take on Marcel Heruer with the Bassendean four recording an impressive seven shot victory. Although the end aggregate saw Bassendean home by 10 shots it was three match winning bowls which got the Basso boys home in the dying stages of the match.
Justin Opie was seven down playing his last bowl, drawing to the ditch to cut the margin to three and Marcel Huerer on consecutive ends cut a five shot deficit down to one and turned another five shot deficit into one shot.
This Week: In a bid to revive their season and keep slim finals hopes alive Mossies have made internal changes this week with the above team the likely line up.
Martin’s Prediction: KARDINYA.
LEEMING V’s MORLEY
1st Round – Leeming 94 (6) def Morley 71(2)
LEEMING
Danny Comrie (Sk) Gary Ford Peter Middleton Steve Harris
Don Munro (Sk) Phil Dobie Tom Glendinning Ryan Havercroft
Lindsay Strange (Sk) Alan Pryce Gary Pemberton Dennis Anderson
Peter Morris (Sk) Bill West Ian Ashworth Ray Morley
A report from the Leeming contact is as follows:
Not a great day out for Leeming. It all looked pretty good at the half way point with only 2 in the aggregate. The only rink to hold their own after that point was Peter MORRIS’s rink scoring 7 to Thornlie’s 8. The other 3 rinks only scored a total of 11 points between them in the closing 10 ends. Bugger.
Peter MORRIS’s rink. Pete and the boys got off to another slow start being 7 to 1 down after six ends. They then outscored Thornlie 12 to 11 in what ended up being a very close game. There was only one score greater than 2 in the match. We just need to get the boys out of the blocks a bit faster to register a win.
Danny COMRIE’s rink. Six up after 11 ends then outscored 18 to 4 over the closing 10 ends. Thornlie then had a purple patch for the next 4 ends scoring 12 unanswered shots. It was close again for the rest of the match but the damage was done.
Don MUNRO’s rink. 3 up after 11 ends then outscored 10 to 3 over the closing 10 ends. Both skippers had a great day out but the closing half dozen ends saw the Thornlie skip play some big shots on ends where we were holding which was pretty much the only difference in the two teams.
Lindsay STRANGE’s rink. It all looked good after the first end then not much joy after that. 5 down after 11 a then outscored 12 to 4 over the last 10 ends. Dropping a 6 on the 16th end didn’t help matters. In their defence Al PRYCE could hardly walk doing his back in at work (so he says). I’m told he missed his seat when he went to sit down. Hard to believe considering the size of his ar…chair.
This Week: No reported changes.
