REPORT ON ‘ONE WHITE’ 2007 / 2008.
PREVIEW - ROUND THIRTEEN
A VERY TIMELY REMINDER ONCE AGAIN
Popular Gosnells Club President, Bob Clark, suffered a heart attack during play in our One White match against Mosman Park last Saturday afternoon. An ambulance was called and he was immediately transported to hospital. Thankfully Bob’s prognosis is good. This is very similar in circumstances to that involving Yokine’s John (Macca) McGrath who late last year suffered a similar attack on the green.
It is yet another timely reminder for us all to be vigilant about any signs or symptoms of unwellness exhibited by ourselves or any of our teammates during play, particularly if it involves pain or numbness down the left side. Get well soon Bob and I’m sure the many calls and inquiries about your health will have you know how much you’re thought of by all.
NOTE:
Special thanks for the good sportsmanship shown by our One White counterparts from Mosman Park regarding this incident. Also well done to Andrew Hay-Hendry who had just arrived to spectate but who quickly borrowed a pair of shoes and 2 bowls to fill in for Bob.
Pity I didn’t think to get a photo of Andrew’s state of dress as he played amongst us well dressed Saturday pennants players – ‘layed back’ to say the least – were they your father’s shorts you were wearing?
Last Weeks Results:
See-ya-later Dalkeith-Nedlands because all we can see is your dust after you again brushed aside your nearest competition in 2nd placed Yokine. Having said that, Yokine have maintained 2nd spot on the ladder courtesy of Thornlie who put paid to 3rd placed Morley’s bid to grab the 2nd position.
Leeming took the majority of points against Safety Bay to sit in 5th spot behind Thornlie on percentage. Mosman Park fought it out to the very last end on each rink to get out of jail against Gosnells who snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Kardinya kept their hopes alive with a gutsy win at Bassendean, which leaves the Basso boys well and truly looking down the barrel.
Bassendean 59(1) defeated by Kardinya Gosnells 83(7)
Dalkeith-Nedlands 75(7) defeated Yokine 69(1)
Gosnells 75(2) defeated by Mosman Park 77(6)
Leeming 91(6½) defeated Safety Bay 71(1½)
Morley 87(7) defeated by Thornlie 63(1)
This Week’s – Picks of the Bunch:
Thornlie (4th) v’s Leeming (5th): This should be a belter with only percentage separating these two good sides who both sit only 4½ points behind 2nd placed Yokine. However only 5 points behind these two are Mosman Park who are favoured to win this week at home against Bassendean. So by my calculations the winner will be in the top four and the loser won’t. Worth fighting for I would think.
Morley (3rd) v’s Kardinya (7th): 10½ points separate these two sides. The reality is that there are three sides snapping at the heels of Morley who have suffered from inconsistency and can’t afford another loss at the moment. Kardinya are showing grit in their quest to avoid relegation and fight their way back up the ladder, but they can’t afford to stumble. A second win in a row away from home will be do wonders for Kardinya while a loss will undo the hard work. Morley badly need a win at home.
LADDER:
Dalkeith-Nedlands 75; Yokine 57½; Morley 54½; Leeming 53; Thornlie 53; Mosman Park 48; Kardinya 44; Bassendean 39; Safety Bay 37½; Gosnells 16½.
‘My Predictions’: Last week 4 from 5. For the season (37 – 23) winning rate.

Tony Cocodis (Sk), John Smith, Marc Abonnel, Les Phillips
Rick Flintoff (Sk), Shaun McCormack, David Phillips, Scott Jaggs
Ian Hastings (Sk), Dave Wood, Steve Vinci, Gordon Manuel
Geoff Gould (Sk), Daryl Radford, Rex Sweet, Owen Sweetman
A report from a contact at Kardinya is as follows:
We went to Bassendean last Saturday knowing that nothing less than a win would be sufficient to keeping our survival hopes alive. We were therefore very happy indeed to come away with 7 points.
Part of the success could be attributed to Geoff Gould’s stirring team talk before the game, where he not only emphasised the importance of a win, but that the win would be dedicated to Dave Wood, whose partner passed away the day before. Yes, Dave, we did it for you! We now need to leapfrog either Mosman Park or Leeming to retain the One White Colour at the Club.
Ian Hastings versus Justin Opie
Ian’s rink of Rob Foy (Third), Dave Wood (Second) and Gordon Manuel (Lead) had an absolute day out against Justin’s boys. In a selection triumph, Ian returned to the One White team as a skipper, with Rob, Dave and Gordon each dropping back one position. The rink returned a whopping 29-10 win, with Justin’s boys scoring six of their ten shots on the last few ends. All four of our boys bowled extremely well, with Dave relishing the opportunity to play Second with a somewhat reduced load on his shoulders.
Geoff Gould versus John Lynch
Geoff’s rink of Daryl Radford (Third), Rex Sweet (Second) and Owen Sweetman (Lead) continued on their winning ways, having a comfortable 23-16 win over John’s rink. All four of our lads contributed strongly during the afternoon, with Rex now relishing his chosen opportunity to play Second.
Tony Cocodis versus Marcel Heruer
Tony’ rink of John Smith (Third), Marc Abonnel (Second) and Les Phillips (Lead) continued on their winning ways, with a good 19-13 win over Marcel’s team. All four bowled well with Les (currently nicknamed “Glasson” by Tony) having another great game as Leader.
Rick Flintoff versus Craig Greenhalgh
Rick’s rink of Steve Vinci (Third), Shaun McCormack (Second) and David Phillips (Lead) lost 20-12 to Craig’s rink. David and Shaun were solid up front, but the damage was primarily done by Phil Hutchinson who was sensational in the first half of the game, while Craig also converted on many occasions. Why does our rink always seem to catch one player who decides to have a day out!!
This Week:
The Selectors have made a few changes, one enforced, to the team for the next fixture which is away at Morley. Scott Jaggs returns to the One White side for his third game to Lead for Rick Flintoff, while David Phillips and Shaun McCormack move up to Second and Third respectively on that rink. In Rob Foy’s absence, Dave Wood moves back to Third on Ian Hastings’ rink, with Steve Vinci moving across to play Second on that rink. The rinks are as above.
Every game is now a virtual final, and our calculations suggest that we must win four of our last six games to retain the Colour.
Martin’s Prediction: KARDINYA.

MOSMAN PARK V’s BASSENDEAN
1st Round – Mosman Park 69(1) def by Bassendean 86(7)
MOSMAN PARK
John Rainoldi (Sk) Rad Anderson Jarrad Rainoldi Ron Trowbridge
Steve Withers (Sk) Mark Simpson Trent Teague John Deery
Lester Mortimer (Sk) Wyn Ferris David Teague Hawke
Lindsay Hicks (Sk) Steve Novak Tom O’Neill Glenn Ellis
A report from a contact at Mosman Park is as follows:
Mosman Park travelled to Gosnells with two large motivating factors, a win would keep them well and truly in the top four hunt and a victory would be a wonderful gesture to club great Don Evans who passed away on the morning of the game.
On paper Mossies looked good things, unfortunately bowls is not played on paper. Very little separated both sides all day with the home side holding a slender aggregate lead for the majority of the game.
John Rainoldi returned to the Mosman Park line up after missing the past two games and guided he’s rink to a 21 – 16 victory against Brett Holland’s four. This was a more than handy win as Rainoldi’s four were 15 – 5 behind mid way through the match.
On the adjoining rink Lindsey Hicks and Co were locked in a close battle all game against the Mulchay foursome with the home rink scraping home 19 – 16.
Steve Withers foursome which included youngster Trent Teague who filled in for the unavailable Tom Reid continued their impressive season accounting for Gosnells stalwart Kevin Bairstow 25 – 18.
The final match up saw Bert Cruikshank lead his rink to a come from behind victory against Lester Mortimer’s four, eventually winning by seven shots.
In an amazing conclusion to the match each rink all had one end to play with Mortimer picking up one shot, Rainoldi picking up one shot, Withers picking up five shots and Hicks (who’s rink were last out) picking up a three to get Mosman Park home by two slender shots.
It was a great escape by Mosman Park to keep their promotion hopes alive however much credit must be given to Gosnells who showed they will still fight tooth and nail until seasons end despite looking certain to be demoted.
This Week: No reported changes at this stage.

BASSENDEAN
Craig Greenhalgh (Sk) Phil Hutchinson Colin Irvine Ray Denton
John Lynch (Sk) Jamie Davies Nolan Hall Norm Kirkup
Marcel Heruer (Sk) Colin Hotker Neil Strachan Fred Early
Justin Opie (Sk) Wes Jones Ian Robinson Steve Black
A report from a contact at Bassendean is as follows:
Unfortunately my home suburb has lost its internet services for at least three weeks so I can only give Martin a brief verbal report.
More than 40m of rain in the lead up to Saturday’s match saw two things as a result: 1) it didn’t allow us any practice, and, 2) it played into Kardinya’s hands to have our usual fast greens having all the speed taken out of them.
Craig Greenhalgh’s rink:
Winners by 8 point over the Flintoff rink
A good win by Greenie’s rink of Phil Hutchinson, Colin Irvine and lead Ray Denton who brought home Basso’s only point for the day. Greenie was full of praise for his team mates saying that the front two gave them a great start while Hutchie was great at third all day.
Marcel Heruer’s rink:
Went down by 6 shots to the Cocodis rink.
Marcel reports that as a team they played poorly and that they all struggled with consistency. The Kardinya lead had a good game.
John Lynch’s rink:
Went down by 7 shots to the Gould rink.
We got away well to lead by 5 shots to nil, however as soon as Kardinya got the mat they played ditch to ditch and we couldn’t handle the length on a slow green.
Justin Opie’s rink:
Went down by 19 shots to the Hastings rink.
No excuses offered by Justin who reported that they just couldn’t handle the changed conditions on the day and that their opponents, in particular their lead, played well.
This Week:
No changes at this stage to the rinks but we are still hoping that Gordon Gray will recover from injury and return in the near future. The message is that there is only one way to go and that is up and we haven’t given up.
Martin’s Prediction: MOSMAN PARK.

THORNLIE
Paul Pohe (Sk) Alan Petchell Jim Stein Andy Lill

Glyn Vaughan (Sk) Ross McMillian Ian Rewell Tony Churcher
Greg Reagan (Sk) Terry McCormack John Walker Ray Halse
A report from a contact at Thornlie is as follows:
Morley V’s The Ravens at Morley
Well – it seems one of the more difficult tasks in white this year is to win at home! Morley surely started favorites to win this fixture – however that was not how the result played out.
Mr. Downey selected Morley to win and that put the “KISS OF DEATH” on the home team.
Played on a very nice piece of grass running around 14.5 to 15 seconds (their green keeping staff should be commended following 40 mm of rain on Thursday) Morley was in trouble early.
Glyn “Bubbles” Vaughan wanted to draw Bruce Walter’s rink and he got his wish. Bubbles well assisted by “Don’t Practice Much” McMillan, “Buddah” Rewell and “Ynot” Churcher, set about destroying the opposition. When the last bowl was played there was a 22 shot gap on the score board that was always going to make life very difficult for the home sides ambitions for the aggregate, well done fellas.
“Big Jim” McKenzie, Doc Kimble, “Bruiser” Hansen and “Hava Chat” Irwine, played out a tough one against Allan Barron. Rocket Rod had a great day leading against “Hava Chat”, however regardless of Rocket’s good bowls – Bruiser and Doc undid a lot of his good work. Macka and The Barron both had their moments in the sun with the final honors going McKenzie’s way by 2 shots.
Paul “Get it up” Pohe was in all sorts of strife. Wayne Neilson had this rinks measure all day. The Ravens rink struggled and it may be fair to say Paul played some great bowls on occasions to keep the bleeding to a minimum. The 5 shot loss was well and truly covered by the huge win of Bubbles Vaughan.
Finally we look at the “Rink of Reagan”. They stepped out against Big Pete Aungier, J A, Young James and the “Never stuck for words fella” John Sherro.
For the first 19 ends it was nip and tuck with the score board reading 16 all at end 19.
The 20th end was quite outstanding for two reasons. Firstly it produced the “quote of the day” and following right on “the bowl of the day”. Gucci Reagan changed over 1 up and had a few third shots. Gucci’s first bowl was just a little short and said to his third “shall I play the same bowl” Terry McCormack retorted very quickly “NO the last one was short” – “this time reach the head and sit their second shot out for 4” – Gucci – ever composed – played the requested shot very successfully – arriving with just the right weight and sitting out Morley’s second shot for a 4 up result.
The Ravens picked up a single on the last end to run out 5 shots the better over Peter’s rink.
Well the beer tasted very nice and The Ravens went home well satisfied with their days work and the 7 points that will place them back in the top four – a very nice place to be.
This Week: No changes have been reported.

LEEMING
Danny Comrie (Sk) Gary Ford Peter Middleton Steve Harris
Don Munro (Sk) Phil Dobie Tom Glendinning Ryan Havercroft
Lindsay Strange (Sk) Alan Pryce Gary Pemberton Dennis Anderson
Peter Morris (Sk) Bill West Ian Ashworth Ray Morley
A report from the Leeming contact is as follows:
Last week:
A fairly tricky day at Leeming with a solid easterly blowing all day. Not normal conditions, usually have a howling sea breeze from the opposite direction. The 6½ points however will come in handy considering the table.
Danny COMRIE’s rink:
Danny and the boys lead by 6 at 10 ends but only scored 5 points after that. They were 2 down going into the last but managed a 2 to tie the game. 20 ends produced scores of only 1 or 2 in this tight match. I am reliably informed that Danny came to the fore again and played numerous conversion/saving shots. This draw is still a good result for us, ½ a point may well make the difference between relegation or not with the ladder being so tight.
Lindsay STRANGE’s rink.
Lindsay and the boys do it again with a solid 10 shot win. They led from go to wo with the closest the game getting, 2 points at the 10th end. After that Leeming scored 13 shots to Safety Bays 5. Quote of the day from Lindsay “There’s been more 4s scored than in a one day cricket match”.
Peter MORRIS’s rink:
Sadly not a great day with the boys getting off to a slow start, after 4 ends they were down 11 shots (makes for a long day at the office). To their credit after the 4th end they outscored Safety Bay 16 points to 13. Shame about the start.
Don MUNRO’s rink:
The boys did us proud with a great 21 point win which hopefully secures the beers for the best rink win this week. We took the lead on the 3rd end and won 14 of the remaining ends. Not much goes wrong when you have this type of win with all the team having solid performances. Apologies for the trail on the 19th end which took us from 2 up to 2 down eventually dropping a 3 on that end.
This Week:
Peter MIDDLETON is back playing second for Danny COMRIE after a weekend overseas (drinking and generally behaving badly at Rotto). Ryan HAVERCROFT has had a couple of good performances and his addition to Div 1 is a bonus. Ray MORLEY comes back into Peter MORRIS’s rink as lead, with Ian ASHWORTH as 2nd and Bill WEST as 3rd which makes for a very strong rink. Full team as above.
Martin’s Prediction: Um – THORNLIE at home.

A report received from the Yokine contact this week.
Doggies still short of the mark.
The Yokine Doggies played the Silvertails at Dalkeith's home ground and fell short of the benchmark for 1 White.
The Silvertails have a team moral like no other in the competition. Unfortunately the Dogs frustration showed and infected each other and we didn't gel like a team in second spot.
The Dogs need to stop playing for themselves and PUT THE CLUB FIRST. We only fell six shots short of the aggregate but never threatened the Silvertails.
Scott Edmonds came back from 10 down to only lose by 3 while Alan Davis's rink only fell short of the mark by the same margin.
Jamie O'Keefe’s last end tactic of having every team member drive at a lone jack had a surprising return of 4 shots against Marco Krajancic to lose by seven.
Heaton's rink picked up two 3's on the last two ends to win by seven. The Silvertails will finish on top and be a worthy team for promotion to the Premier League.
This Week: More Changes for the Dogs
McGrath - In
Fulcher - Out
Rinks are as above. The Dogs need to stop shuffling people for personal reasons and PUT THE CLUB FIRST. If they don't they could quite easily miss the top four and the playoffs.
It would be a shame with a season that started with so much promise.

A painful report to write this week because we were holding the aggregate in our hands and blew it. That’s not taking anything away from Mossies it’s just a fact. Apart from being ahead at other times during the afternoon, coming to the last end on each rink the aggregate was ours by 8 shots but we dropped shots on all four rinks on the last end to the tune of 5, 3, 1 & 1 to lose by 2. As I said earlier - we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory - but well done Mossies for your never say die performance.
Interesting to note that our two rinks that won this week (congrats to them) were the two that lost last week and obviously vica versa. Nice if we could put it all together.
Bert Cruickshank’s rink V’s the Lindsay Hicks rink:
Congratulations to these boys – Bert Cruickshank (Sk), Trevor Gibbs, (Bob Clark & replacement Andrew Hay-Hendry) and Peter Gale. They were up 10 to 5 after the eighth end when Bob suffered his heart attack and was replaced by Andrew. Not surprisingly we dropped the next 3 ends to be down 10 to 12 as concentration waned and Andrew completed his ‘roll up’ so to speak. The boys then regrouped and came home strong to win 22 to 15. Fantastically Andrew Hay-Hendry played a very influential part from ends 12 to 21 inclusive to sneak our MVP overall, while for the Mossies David Teague at 2nd and skip Lester Mortimer were their standouts. My contact on that rink tells me that Lester reinforced that bowls is a game of millimetres and that is thankfully what his near brilliant bowls missed by so many times.
Neville Mulcahy’s rink V’s Lester Mortimer’s rink:
Congratulations to Neville on recording his first win since answering an SOS from the club to take over a rink in 1st Division earlier in the season. Neville has done it hard with player changes to his rink and has had a loss by 2 shots and two losses by only 1 shot along the way. Neville’s rink of Mike Rickard (lead), Gordon Bradford (2nd) and Colin Watters (3rd) were down 2 to 4 after five ends but up 9 to 5 after eleven ends. Mossies fought back though to have us down 10 to 13 after sixteen ends; but then our boys rallied to eventually win 19 to 16. A good team effort by our four against strong competition.
Brett Holland’s rink V’s John Rainoldi’s rink:
The rink draw saw the Rainoldi father and son v’s the Downey father and son. Two of the four pictured went on to be the best for their respective rinks on the day.
-------------------L/R:Dave Martin Downey John and Jarrad Rainoldi
--------------------
This week
there were only two momentum swings - virtually all us for the first half and definitely all them for the second half. We led 7 to 3 after six ends; and then 15 to 5 after eleven ends. After the 11th end Jason, David, and I all reiterated to each other that we had to keep it going and concentrate because we knew they were going to come back at us hard. Even with that message to each other we still couldn’t stop the tide that turned. Rags and his team won the last eight ends by 1’s and 2’s to run out 5 point winners. David Downey had an outstanding game leading for us, while Jarrad Rainoldi at 2nd was very solid and the pick of the bunch for the Mossies.
Kevin Bairstow’s rink V’s Steve Withers rink:
This was a see-sawing game all day but without a doubt what killed our boys was the strong finish by the Mossies. It was 4 to 4 after five ends; 10 to 9 after nine ends; 16 to 17 after eighteen ends but the Mossies then scored 2 to 8 shots on the last three ends to take the honours 18 to 25.
This Week:
Roy Sharp was a late withdrawal last week with a leg injury which saw Gordon Bradford come into the side as his replacement.
Wholesale changes to the rinks by the selectors this week which include:-
OUTs: Bob Clark Andrew Hay-Hendry Mike Rickard Peter Gale Trevor Gibbs.
INs: Roy Sharp, Don McColl, Ray Tierney, Stuart Masterson.
Martin’s Prediction: YOKINE.
