REPORT ON ‘ONE WHITE’ 2007 / 2008.
PREVIEW - ROUND TEN
With the first home and away round completed we find that with the exception of Gosnells, who unfortunately are hopelessly tailed off, the One White Division is alive and well, and wide open.
After last Saturday’s round I say in particular, “HELLO SAFETY BAY” (it’s ok I don’t expect an answer) and welcome to the race:- 1) to stay in the One White Division at only 5 points off 5th place, and, 2) to make the finals at only 10 points off 4th place.
What a great competition we have on our hands.
Last Week:
Safety Bay gave it big time to Kardinya by 35 shots to grab all 8 points and leave Kardinya 0 and 2 since the mid season break - ouch;
Thornlie bounced back beautifully from last weeks disappointment to get 7½ points against 2nd place holders Yokine;
Leeming kept marching on to make it an impressive 2 from 2 since the mid season break this time taking 7 points from their clash with Bassendean, who are also saying ouch and must be starting to get a tad worried;
Morley also made it an impressive 2 from 2 since the break to get 7 points from their clash with Mosman Park who continue to struggle with consistency;
Dalkeith-Nedlands after a struggle similar to the week before still came away with 7 points against Gosnells. As I’ve said before – good sides mostly always find a way to win and that’s exactly what the Silvertails have done for the last two weeks in winning by 5 points and 6 points respectively.
This Week:
Pick of the bunch: -
Morley (3rd) v’s Yokine (2th): What a great encounter this match should be with only a ½ point separating these two impressive sides. I wonder if Rod Heaton will do a Troy Buswell and rush back from holidays to address the crisis of being well and truly smacked by Thornlie last week. (Although ‘the heater’ played last week he returned to his holiday after the match). Both Leeming and Thornlie are poised to pounce on the loser.
Leeming (4th) v’s Mosman Park (6th): There’s a bit on the line here for these two sides. Leeming can break away from the hungry pack with a win or they can swap places with Mosman Park if they lose. Mossies will desperately want the later and are really looking to establish some positive consistency with their results.
Dalkeith-Nedlands v’s Bassendean: Although Basso have 6 of their last 8 games at home they simply can’t afford to let the pack get to far away and relegation alarm bells must be close to ringing. Dalkeith-Nedlands should be back to full strength this week and will be a daunting prospect at home when a win for Basso is desperately needed to stop the hemorrhaging.
LAST WEEKS RESULTS:
Leeming 101 (8) defeated Gosnells 60 (0)
Morley 78 (7) defeated Bassendean 70 (1)
Dalkeith-Nedlands 79 (6) defeated Kardinya 74 (2)
Mosman Park 75 (7) defeated Thornlie 67 (1)
Yokine 88 (7) defeated Safety Bay 58 (1)
LADDER:
Dalkeith-Nedlands 54; Yokine 47; Morley 46½; Leeming 39; Thornlie 39; Mosman Park 34; Kardinya 32; Bassendean 31; Safety Bay 29; Gosnells 8½.
‘My Predictions’: Last week 2 from 5. For the season (27 – 18) winning rate

Marcel Heruer (Sk) Colin Hotker Neil Strachan Fred Early
Justin Opie (Sk) Wes Jones Ian Robinson Steve Black
A report from a contact at Bassendean is as follows:
Bassendean VS Leeming:
Played at Leeming on a good green with a strong breeze.
John Lynch VS Don Munro:
A good game with many good shots played by both sides, the Lynch lead team kept with the home side until late in the game when they pulled away. Players were quite evenly matched with Glendinning playing a good game, the main difference was the home team’s knowledge of the green and the input of the skipper from the Leeming team.
Leeming by 8 shots
Justin Opie VS Danny Comrie:
Playing well and getting out to an early lead the Opie rink was headed for a good win, being 6 shots up with 3 ends to go they were confident that they were to break their drought. Unfortunately they dropped 7 shots over the next three ends to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Leeming by 1 shot
Gordon Gray VS Lindsay Strange:
Playing solid bowls the Leeming rink lead by Strange, they fought to a lead and managed to keep it. They were chased hard by the Bassendean team who matched their opponents for most of the game, Strange the skipper played a good game and saw his team home in a good performance.
Leeming by 9 shots
Marcel Hereur VS Peter Morris:
A good game played by all players involved with Bassendean skipping out to a lead and managing to hold it through to the end. They withstood a couple of charges from the Leeming side and in the end proved to be the steadier team on the day.
Bassendean by 8 shots
This Week:
P. Hutchinson in and S. Patterson out. Also a little bit of shuffling of the rinks sees Craig (Greeny) Greenhalgh take over as skip in place of Gordon Gray who will play 2nd in the same rink. Other changes as above.
Martin’s Prediction: DALKEITH-NEDLANDS
GOSNELLS V’s KARDINYA
1st Round – Gosnells 68(2) def by Kardinya 98(6)
GOSNELLS
Brett Holland (Sk) Jason Bryan Andrew Hay-Hendry David Downey
Bert Cruickshank (Sk) Trevor Gibbs Roy Sharp Peter Gale
Neville Mulcahy (Sk) Trevor Close Colin Waters Mike Rickard
Kevin Bairstow (Sk) Peter Hodgson Brian Creswell Trevor Simons
A good effort by our boys to take it right up to the One White competition leaders, Dalkeith- Nedlands, at the home of the Silvertails. At the end of the day our boys only came away with one point but the fight for the aggregate points was contested in earnest and many of the Silvertails players carried worried faces until very late in the day. Having said that, the Silvertails won the aggregate by six shots and thoroughly deserved their hard fought win. Although all-round an admirable performance, our guys need to keep striving to go one step better than just putting up a good fight. Many of our players specifically asked me to mention how very good the green was that they played on, so congrats to the Dalkeith-Nedlands club and relevant staff for that.
Brett Holland’s rink V’s John Morgan’s rink:
John Morgan and his boys copped a red hot, Brett Holland, who decided to make up for a quiet performance the week before by coming out all guns blazing this week. Brett was well backed up by his team, in particular his 3rd, Jason Bryan, fresh from interstate Junior State Representative Duties. Up 4 to 2 after five ends; 12 to 3 after eleven ends; 15 to 6 after sixteen ends, then picked up a 6 on the eighteenth end to put the game beyond any doubt to eventually win 23 to 8.
On The Side:
A certain member of my family who shall remain nameless, (there’s only 3 of us and it wasn’t me and it wasn’t my daughter, Kelsie) has demanded that I highlight very loudly that John Morgan put down a wrong bias during their match on Saturday.
The very passionate plea (demand) went like this:-
“Dad, dad you’ve got to give it to Morgs for doing a wrong bias today ok, you’ve got to really give it to him because he gave me crap when I got to their club on Saturday about how they’d have to change my nappy during the afternoon and burp me between ends, so you’ve really got to give it to him ok. You’ve got to Dad”.
Now after I picked myself off the floor and tried to stop laughing, which didn’t go down at all well let me tell you, I tried without success to explain to David, I mean the family member that wasn’t me and wasn’t Kelsie, that putting down a wrong bias during a match is a very easy thing to do and one SHOULDN’T BE ATTACKED, RIDICULED, BELITTLED AND FINED as I was last Thursday by my one white teammates and home spectators during and after our match against Warwick.
Besides I think John Morgan might have enough problems in facing Marco on his return to Perth; and is it true that some of John's One White ‘mates’ couldn’t wait to get on the phone on Saturday afternoon to tell Marco in Tasmania the fate of his rink in his absence. Dobbers.
Neville Mulcahy’s rink V’s Peter Bacich’s rink:
A great match between these two sides who shared the honours all afternoon before the home ground boys ran out winners by one shot. One heart-breaking shot for our guys who desperately want to win for our club. Were 3 to 3 after four ends; down 8 to 9 after twelve ends; up 13 to 12 after sixteen ends; to eventually lose by 16 to 17. For our guys, Neville was best for us closely followed by 3rd, Trevor Close, who continues to improve with match fitness after only his second game for the year following injury. For Dalkeith-Nedlands their 2nd, Gordon Wilson, was very solid all day while their skip, Peter Bacich, was brilliant early before going missing in action in the middle and coming back strong again towards the end when needed.
Kevin Bairstow’s rink V’s Tony Skoric’s rink:
In a complete reversal of the previous start, the Bear’s boys jumped away well to lead 6 to 0 after four ends; but then didn’t score again for the next 5 ends to be down 6 to 9 after nine ends; 10 to 12 after fourteen ends to eventually go down 16 to 20. Trevor Gibbs and Peter Hodgson were best for the Gossy boys while they tell me that Ross Donald was absolutely outstanding for the Dalkeith-Nedlands rink
Bert Cruickshank’s rink V’s Tom Williams’ rink:
Bert’s boys also got away well to lead 5 to 0 after two ends, but then didn’t score again for the next 5 ends to be down 5 to 10 after seven ends; 7 to 14 after eleven ends but then dropped a 6 on the twelfth to be right behind the 8 ball; down 14 to 28 after eighteen ends to eventually lose 16 to 32. Our boys on this rink tell me that they were outplayed by all four of their opponents for consistency on the day but in particular their 3rd, John McIntosh, was simply outstanding and the pick of a well performed bunch.
This Week: No changes at this stage.

KARDINYA
Tony Cocodis (Sk) Shaun McCormack Graeme Wake Les Phillips
Ian Hastings (Sk) Steve Vinci Marc Abonnel David Phillips
Rob Foy (Sk) Dave Wood Gordon Manuel Scott Jaggs
Geoff Gould (Sk) Daryl Radford Rex Sweet Owen Sweetman
A report from a contact at Kardinya is as follows:
What a dreadful week to be writing up the report on our game! After coming so close to beating Dalkeith/Nedlands the previous week, we suffered a humiliating defeat down at a windy Safety Bay. It was a carbon copy of last year’s game down there where we lost 8-0, and never looked like winning even after the first 16 ends across the board.
Even Geoff Gould’s rink managed to lose its first game for the season. His rink of Daryl Radford (Third), Rex Sweet (Second) and Owen Sweetman (Lead) were 7-0 down early to Graham Scott’s rink, but fought back well to go into the last end tied at 16-16. However the Safety Bay rink scored one shot on the last end to see Geoff and his team go down 17-16. Eight out of nine ain’t at all bad, Geoff!
Ian Hastings’ rink of
Steve Vinci (Third), Marc Abonnel (Second) and David Phillips (Lead) lost by 8 shots to Matt Massari’s rink. In a reasonably tight game where we were in touch most of the day, it was Matt’s conversions and saves that prevented the score being much closer.
Tony Cocodis’ rink of
Shaun McCormack (Third), Graeme Wake (Second) and Les Phillips had a good tussle in the first half of the game against Alan Holmes’ rink, but the Safety Bay boys pulled away in the closing stages to win by 12 shots. Graeme was Kardinya’s best bowler on the rink.
Robbie Foy’s rink of
Dave Wood (Third), Kerry Eames (Second) and Gordon Manuel (Lead) had another disappointing day, going down 31-19 to Ray Beard’s rink. Gordon had a very good game as Leader.
It was a day where few of our players could be identified for accolades.
The game against Gosnells now represents a must-win situation for us, having picked up only 3 points from the last three fixtures, following a very promising start to the season. We will need to dig deep for the second half of the season to ensure that we retain the Colour. Terry Ball is still a couple of weeks from returning from injury.
This Week:
The Selectors have made two changes to the team for the next fixture away at Gosnells. Gordon Manuel moves to Second on Robbie Foy’s rink in place of Kerry Eames who is unavailable, while Scott Jaggs takes on the Lead position on that rink.
This is a well deserved promotion for Scott who has been leading very well in Second Division, and we wish him the best of luck in his first game in Division One White.
Martin’s Prediction: Gosnells.

Danny Comrie (Sk)Gary Ford Peter Middleton Steve Harris
Phil Dobie (Sk)Bill West Tom Glendinning Doug Grigg
Lindsay Strange (Sk) Alan Pryce Gary Pemberton Dennis Anderson
Ian Ashworth (Sk) Robin Gray Dean Higgon Ray Morley.
A report from a contact at Leeming is as follows:
Another good win by the boys last Saturday grabbing 7 points from Bassendean. We have all seen how tight it is for those teams in the middle of the pack so the 15 points for us over the last two weeks has been crucial. It would be nice to keep it going this week.
Danny Comries’ rink:
A great come from behind win. A tough windy day against quality opposition in Justin Opie’s team. Started off in heaps of trouble when 9 zip down after three ends. I must admit watching the score board during the game that I thought we were going to lose this one. Danny and the boys were down by 11 points after 6 ends but fought back to be only 6 down with 3 ends to go. They then scored a 3, 2 and 2 to win by 1 shot. Danny played particularly well considering he was down more often than not with lots of short bowls blocking his way, and against one of the better bowlers around.
Don Munro’s rink:
One thing I will say about this rink is that one of the team will play the required shot just about every end which makes for some solid performances. If the lead isn’t there the second will step up and so on. Apologies to Doug (I’ll get one close soon) Griggs and I have to rename him (Got one close). After 7 ends the scores were tied; 2 in it at 14 ends, but an 8 to 2 run in the closing 7 ends clinched this one for Leeming 20 to 12.
Peter Morris’s rink:
My spy has not reported in but the score card shows that the scores were tied after 9 ends. After that the Leeming boys only scored on 3 ends (7 points) to Bassendean’s 9 end (15 points) an 8 point deficit to Leeming.
Lindsay Stranges’s rink:
The boys led from start to finish and from what I saw those new blue marbles of Lindsay are working just fine. Leeming were up by 5 after 7 ends, 9 up after 14 end and won by 9. I must make comment on the world’s shortest bowl ever played. I won’t mention any names but you know who you are! I can’t print what the skipper said. If the thing travelled 10 metres I’d be surprised.
This Week:
Some changes due to 2 skippers being unavailable. Phil Dobie will move up from third to replace Don Munro. Bill West back from injury will play third in that rink. Ian Ashworth will move up from third to replace Peter Morris with Dean Higgon coming into the rink for his first game in Division One for Leeming.
-------------Phil Dobie skippers for the first time in Leeming's top side

John Rainoldi (Sk) Rad Anderson Jarrad Rainoldi Glenn Ellis

Lester Mortimer (Sk) Wyn Ferris David Teague Peter Freund
Lindsay Hicks (Sk) Steve Novak Doug Rogers Tom O’Neill
A report from a contact at Mosman Park is as follows:
Mosman Park VS Morley (at Morley)
Mosman Park travelled to Morley confident of a strong performance after a commanding victory the previous week over Thornlie. Doug Rogers returned to the side after a month off as did Jarrad Rainoldi who was on holiday the previous week. There was to be little joy for Mossies though with Morley always in control, making full use of their home ground knowledge.
Robbie Urquhart and Co were always in control against the strong Steve Withers quartet eventually winning by 11 shots. Bruce Walters rink inflicted the heaviest loss Lester Mortimer would have copped for a few years with a decisive 29 -11 win, with the Mosman Park four having few answers to Morley’s brilliance.
Allan Barron’s rink and Lindsey Hicks rink
were locked in a see sawing battle all day with the lead changing hands a number of times. Barron’s four managed to starve of a late Mossies charge and pick up another important point for Morley falling across the line by two shots.
The one positive for Mossies was the decisive victory by the John Rainoldi lead rink over John Armstrong. Rainoldi’s rink were always in control from the outset eventually (after the last end was killed four times) winning 30 – 15. For Mossies Radd Anderson was in brilliant touch and after a blinder against Thornlie John Rainoldi backed up with an even better game, showing he has lost little of the talent that has been on display for many years in a stellar career.
It would be fair to say after strong off season recruiting Mosman Park will be disappointed with their first half of the year and will be looking for a much better second half. If Mossies front end can provide more consistency then watch out for a late season surge as there is no doubt that the back end of Rainoldi, Withers, Hicks and Mortimer have more than enough talent to get the job done.
This Week:
After missing the first half of the season, young Ryan Hawke, who is a quality player will return to Mosman Park’s top side this week against Leeming.
Martin’s Prediction: MOSMAN PARK.
MORLEY V’s YOKINE
1st Round – Morley 62(1) def by Yokine 87(7)
MORLEY
Peter Aungier (Sk) John Armstrong Graham White John Sheridan
Allan Barron (Sk) M Robinson Rod Revell Andy Elmer
Bruce Walter (Sk) Gavin Grieve Bob Giekie Glenn Britten
Robbie Urquhart (Sk) Wayne Neilson Joe Heiden Brad Moyle
A report from a contact at Morley is as follows:
Great effort by Morley team last Saturday against Mosman Park. The rinks led by Bruce Walter & Bruce Urquhart really played well and as a consequence the Morley team was always in a very good position to go on and take the aggregate, which they did quite comfortably.
Robbie Urquhart's rink really got out of the blocks extremely well against Steve Withers' rink to lead by 15 shots to 1 shot after 6 or 7 ends. All four players were in good form with Wayne Neilson and Robbie Urquhart really on fire. As expected the Mosman Park rink came back at them in the second half of the game but the damage had already well and truly been done.
Bruce Walter's rink also had a good day against the rink led by Lester Mortimer. All players contributed well throughout the game, with Bruce Walter again the pick, playing his usual very high quality game, either converting, saving or adding to the count on numerous occasions. Lester Mortimer, the opposing skipper, played well, but the relentless pressure wore him down in the end.
Allan Barron's rink, with Murray Robinson coming into the side (replacing Graham White who returned to play third in John Armstrong's rink), had a great tussle all day against the rink led by Lindsay Hicks. Allan again had another good day with Murray also contributing very well on many occasions. Unfortunately for the Mosman Park rink, their job became much harder when late in the game skipper Lindsay Hicks pulled his hamstring while driving at the head. He battled on well afterwards, but his influence in the game was diminished from that time on.
John Armstrong's rink had some changes made for this week game with John Sheridan going to lead, Travis Ingram moving up to second and Graham White coming back to play third, however they continued to struggle against the rink led by John Rainoldi, who was in brilliant form for most of the game and led his side to a convincing win. The selectors have needed to make some more changes to this rink for the upcoming game.
This Week:
Peter Aungier comes back from injury to skipper the rink, John Armstrong goes to third and Graham White to second with John Sheridan remaining as lead.

A report from a contact at Yokine is as follows:
Doggies with tails between their legs.
Yokine played the Thornlie Ravens at their nest on the weekend and left four and a half hours later with only half a point. The dogs got beaten (bitten) from start to finish.
With Tony Kay again drawing the white hot rink of Jim McKenzie (coming off the Senior State Pairs victory) and they got the Ravens off to a flyer. Edmonds and Heaton held slight advantages and Jamie O'Keefe in unfamiliar territory being on the wrong side of the ledger.
As the day went on O'Keefe was looking like his first loss would be today while Scott Edmonds was opening a handy lead on Glyn Vaughan. Paul Phoe had turned the tables on Heaton's rink while Jim McKenzie was having a day out drawing out on the visitors centre meter perfect. The dogs looked to be in for a long day at the office.
By the three quarter mark of the game the Doggies tried to rally but the Ravens had all the answers. To the Dogs credit, even when the aggregate was gone they were still looking to scrounge any point they could.
Scott Edmonds held off a freight train to keep a half a point. Heaton had a chance to score a draw or win with a trail on the wide hand but missed the white. O'Keefe came back from 10 shots down to have a chance for a point with his last bowl but just failed. These were good signs for the dogs and it proves it's not the size of the dog in the fight it's the fight in the dog. As it usually happens when the aggregate is in hand the close rinks find a way to hang on to vital points.
It was a wake up call the dogs needed sooner than later. We need four even rinks and the changes made now will give the dogs some time to settle entering into the second round.
A loss the Dogs had to have!
Yokine have made wholesale changes after the loss against the Ravens. It showed that you can't be a top four side with an uneven balance. The changes have also come about with Tony Kay being unavailable.
After taking time to come back to playing after a back injury, Alan Davis, is ready to take on Kay's rink. Ian Coghill will be given every chance to play on Saturday, but with his back injury, it is a day by day process. If Coghill is unable to play Trevor Brougham will play his first game for the top side.
The Doggies mood at the clubhouse was very positive after the loss and we are keen to get the second half of the season off to a good start against the very talented Morley team.
Martin’s Prediction: MORLEY.

Martin Says:
Credit where credit is due – I thought it was a very brave statement when the Thornlie contact wrote the following before last weeks game:-
“Look out Yokine, the only thing you will enjoy on Saturday will be the hospitality and the beer”.
A report from a contact at Thornlie is as follows:
One that did not get away. Yokine came and went enjoying our beer and hospitality and took home as a memento only half a point, as predicted by this writer.
The Ravens started well, "the rink of Reagan" and Big Mack's rink both jumped out well and at the halfway mark these two held substantial leads. Bubbles Vaughan and his band were really having a battle and "get it up" Pohe was about equal with "Rocket Rod", all looked good for The Ravens. Still we had been in good looking situations at this stage several times this season only to see it all turn to $#it on the run home.
Well try as we did, The Ravens finished it off professionally. Bubbles Vaughan was the first off and played brilliantly with a struggling rink to fashion a draw. Big John Walker turned in an impressive performance to assist in producing a very good result as I doubt they were in front at any stage of the game. So we had our first good outcome, half a point.
The next to complete 21 ends was Big Macks rink. What a storey, Andy Lill played a very solid game and got us off to a great start. Doc Kimble overcame a few nerves on the first few ends to turn in a very serviceable game, well done Doc. Al " the Pal" Petchell got with the program as well and played several stunning conversions and drew well most of the day. McKenzie was heard to say after the game that "Blind Freddy could have skippered this rink today and won today", still Macka had a fair day and did what he had to most ends. The rink as a team put in an excellent effort and the bar has now been set at a very substantial height. keep it up boys the Ravens need these results. 21 shots up, placed the aggregate safe and we sat back to watch the last two rinks finish.
"Get it up Pohe" was the next to complete and they had a great tussle with Rocket all day. Paul was concerned re Jim Steins early performance however Steinie found range and looked to come home with a wet sale. Mick Hansen had a good day and the boys battled for a hard fought 3 shot win, well done guys.
With the aggregate in bed and only one rink left to finish it looked all over for 7.5 points. Well that nearly did not happen. With 6 ends left to play when everyone else was finished (I think these guys all knocked off for afternoon tea or something) any way The rink of Reagan lead by 10 shots and looked certain winners. Unbeknown to Reagan someone knocked over O'Keefe's can of Jim Beam and he got right pissed off as you do when this happens.
That might have been what sparked a comeback as the Ravens went into the last end one down. However it was Terry McCormack who got a good one in close and at the changeover the Ravens held a couple of shots, the skippers did not do much to change the head and the result arrived, one up to the Ravens.
Seven and a half points was a great outcome for a great club.
This Week:
We host Safety Bay and we would not expect anything else but a win with the reward for a winning score, may mean a return to the top four - a much better place than dwelling in the bottom four.
