REPORT ON ‘ONE WHITE’ 2007 / 2008. PREVIEW -
ROUND FIVE

Last Week:
With 4 rounds completed we see Dalkeith-Nedlands still undefeated for the aggregate but only 10½ points separate the first seven teams.

Last weekend’s top of the table V’s bottom saw Dalkeith-Nedlands host Safety Bay and come away with another win. Having said that, the Bay put up a tremendous effort to win 2 rinks and only lose the aggregate by 10 shots.

The toss of the coin clash between Leeming and Thornlie at Leeming saw The Ravens run away with the aggregate by 37 shots.

Bassendean had a good win at home against Mosman Park who were not only missing John Rainoldi with work commitments but also suddenly Steve Withers and Mark Simpson. Let’s hope things get sorted to everyone’s satisfaction.

Kardinya on their home surface got home by 9 shots over Morley who put up a good fight and no upset at our railway tracks where Yokine accounted for Gosnells.

THIS WEEK:
For mine the pick of the matches this week is the top four clash between Dalkeith-Nedlands and Thornlie at Thornlie; followed by the toss of the coin match between Yokine and Bassendean at Yokine.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I believe Dalkeith-Nedlands are the ‘gun’ team in One White but there is also no doubt in my mind that Thornlie are a pretty good outfit and will be a formidable opponent in the majority of their matches. We saw last week that Safety Bay away from home put up a great effort against Dalkeith-Nedlands so a confident Thornlie at home could take it right up to the competition leaders.

Yokine and Bassendean are both going along nicely and their clash should be an arm wrestle. I predict the Justin Opie rink will have a statement to make after their loss last week and I also think that a few of the rinks from both sides will match up very well indeed.

This round will take the home and away competition past the ‘quarter completed mark’ so clashes such these hold vital points for both teams.

LAST WEEK:
Dalkeith-Nedlands 84 (6) defeated Safety Bay 74 (2)
Thornlie 100 (7) defeated Leeming 63 (1)
Bassendean 86 (7) defeated Mosman Park 69 (1)
Kardinya 79 (7) defeated Morley 70 (1)
Yokine 87 (7) defeated Gosnells 73 (1)

LADDER:
Dalkeith-Nedlands 26½; Kardinya 21; Yokine 20½; Thornlie 20; Bassendean 18; Morley 17; Leeming 16; Mosman Park 11; Safety Bay 5; Gosnells 5.

‘My Predictions’: Last week 3 from 5. For the season a (14 – 7) winning rate.

MORLEY V’s LEEMING

MORLEY
John Armstrong (Sk) John Sheridan Graham White Travis Ingram
Peter Aungier (Sk) Allan Baron Alan Haley Rod Reval
Bruce Walter (Sk) Gavin Grieve Denis Mullenger Glenn Britten
Robbie Urquhart (Sk) Joe Heiden Brad Moyle Andy Elmer

A report from a contact at Morley is as follows:

A bad day at Kardinya for the Morley Team. Perhaps not finding the surface quite to our liking, although in all fairness it was quite acceptable, drawing well but just a bit holding. The Kardinya Team played with a lot of enthusiasm and were deserved victors.

Peter Aungier's rink as usual was very solid - chalking up another good win. They are proving to be our most reliable rink so far this year - being well led by Peter.

Robbie Urquhart's rink came up against Geoff Gould's rink (probably Kardinya's strongest) and had their chances to win but fell away slightly at the end to lose by 4 shots. They were down 7 to 1 early, recovered very well to lead 14 to 7 only to see Kardinya rally strongly and go on to win.

Bruce Walter's rink made very hard going of it against a very determined Kardinya team well led by their skipper, Ian Hastings. They were set up well by a very consistent leader in David Phillips and their second, Shaun McCormack, also played many telling bowls. The better rink on the day won but some very poor bowls at times by the Morley combination made the Kardinya rink's job far easier than it should have been.

John Armstrong's rink also had a hard time of it all day with their opposition getting very good results, on many occasions, playing weighted shots into the head. This Week: Some sideways movements have occurred this week with Denis Mullenger coming over to Bruce Walter's rink as a second and Andy Elmer going into lead for Robbie Urquhart.

LEEMING
Danny Comrie (Sk) Gary Ford Peter Middleton Steve Harris
Don Munro (Sk) Bill West Phil Dobie Tom Glendinning
Lindsay Strange (Sk) Alan Pryce Gary Pemberton Dennis Anderson
Peter Morris (Sk) Ian Ashworth Colin Webber Ray Morley

A report from a contact at Leeming is as follows:

Well done to Don MUNRO and his team for securing the only Leeming rink win in what was a very disappointing day for Leeming. It seems we have more difficulty winning at home than away, having said that, all credit to Thornlie who played very good bowls all day.

D MUNRO'S rink: Don reported that all performed well throughout the entire game and held on for a very close win. Don was very pleased with first time 1 Division player Nobby BOLTON, who played second for him and I'm sure will get further opportunities in Division 1. No score cards for any of the games so am unable to give progressive scores.

L STRANGE's rink: Alan PRYCE tells me that their lead (Dennis Anderson) was on fire, he gave them a start just about every end and had the wood on his opponent the whole match, which is a shame as his effort doesn’t show up in the final score. Gary Pemberton (Second) drew well all game and played in the same vane as our Lead, by adding close shots and covering bowls when required. Gary also showed his versatility with a couple of smashing drives (We call them dam busters because when he lets them go they bounce up the green with speed to great effect).
The Third (Alan Pryce) tells me he struggled all day unable get his game going and match his opponent who was able to change the head on numerous occasions to the advantage of his side. This un-did the great work of Denis and Gary up front. The Skip (Lindsay Strange) was then under pressure on numerous occasions trying to cut down on dropping big numbers and when he did change the head his opposing skipper played some big bowls to arrest the head back in their teams favour.

D COMRIE's rink: Come back Gary FORD!! Sadly Phil Dobie filled in as third for Gary (unavailable) and was unable to give Danny a shot all day. Everyone else did their bit but Thornlie were too consistent. Even when Leeming did hold shots the Thornlie skip would manage a conversion. Phil Dobie accepted full responsibility for the end where Leeming dropped one of those scores. The only drive that came close to the intended target ended up by slicing the kitty into a pack of 5 Thornlie bowls and the rest, as they say, is history.

P MORRIS rink: Couldn't catch up with Pete for comment but I believe they had a good game for the main but that Thornlie got away towards the end to win by seven shots..

THIS WEEK:
Gary Ford returns to play third for Danny Comrie and Phil Dobie, who filled in for Gary, will return to play 2nd for Don Monro.

Martin’s Observation:- “Come back Gary FORD!!” – Now surely this wouldn’t be the same Gary Ford who was shamed mercilessly in the Leeming column in the past for daring to take credit for having played a good game or two, who was scurrilously labeled a certain type of ‘Jam’ and was accused of the reckless and unsportsmanlike behaviour of setting fire to a bin during pennant play.
Surely this couldn’t be the same person that the SOS “Come back Gary FORD!!” was directed at, could it?

Martin’s Prediction: MORLEY.

MOSMAN PARK V’s KARDINYA

MOSMAN PARK
John Rainoldi (Sk) Mark Simpson Jarrad Rainoldi Glenn Ellis
Steve Withers (Sk) Lindsay Hicks Tom O’Neil John Deery
Lester Mortimer (Sk) Wyn Ferris David Teague Peter Freund
Peter Cole (Sk) Steve Novak Rad Anderson Tom Reid

A report from a contact at Mosman Park is as follows:

Last Week: Mossies V Bassendean

Cole (Sk) Novak Anderson Reid
This game was close all day with the Cole quartet holding a slender lead for most of the day. It was a real team effort by Mossies: Tom Reid had a fantastic game while Rad Anderson along with Steve Novak put in solid performances. Late replacement skip Peter Cole performed well and will retain a rink for the coming week at least. Justin Opie played well all day and was Bassendean’s shining light but the Bassendean boys were left saying ‘what if’.
Late in the game Justin Opie had four Basso bowls waiting behind the head for him to trail the jack and pick up a big score. However instead of picking up the jack cleanly he slightly wicked it to the left colliding with the shot bowl before being propelled a foot forward for the Mossie boys to pick up four and lead 17-11. It was that end that decided the result with the Cole rink going on to win 22-12.

Hicks (Sk) Ellis Howat Freund
Had a great tussle with the Heruer led four. The Hick’s boys took an early 9-1 lead before the Basso boys hit back and hit the lead 11-9 before slightly increasing that lead to win 20-15. This game could have gone either way with Glen Ellis carrying on his great form in having a great game playing three for the first time this year.

Mortimer (Sk) Ferris Teague Kennedy
This was a long day for Mortimer’s rink. No matter what they tried the Bassendean boys just wouldn’t let them into the game. The first three for Bassendean all played well and Lynch closed out any chances the Mossie four had. For Mossies, Dave Teague carried on his great form from last week, but was a lone hand with the usually solid Mortimer slightly out of touch. Bassendean controlled the game from the outset and went on to win 27- 17.

Rogers (Sk) Rogers O'Neill Deery
The Rogers led four got off to a flyer leading 8-0 but that was the only good news for them. For most of the game with the Basso boys all played solid bowls and were far too consistent for the Mossie boys with Bassendean winning 27-15.

THIS WEEK:
John Rainoldi should be back after missing last week due to work commitments. At this stage it appears that Steve Withers and Mark Simpson will play but now Doug Rogers won’t. Peter Cole is set to retain a rink after a great effort against Justin Opie last week but there may be a bit of shuffling of the teams.

KARDINYA

Darryl Radford (Sk) John Smith Kerry Eames Ivan Botica
Ian Hastings (Sk) Dave Wood Shaun McCormack David Phillips
Rex Sweet (Sk) Rob Foy Mark Abonnel Steve Vinci
Geoff Gould (Sk) Tony Cocodis Graeme Wake Owen Sweetman

Dave Wood Kardinya (pictured) playing three to Ian Hastings

-------------------------Dave Wood
A report from a contact at Kardinya is as follows:

It was very pleasing to record a 7-1 win against the very strong Morley combination on our home green. Morley beat us three times in the 2005/2006 season, including the Preliminary Final win, and it was nice to reverse those results. Terry Ball was a late withdrawal with a knee injury, so the selectors moved Daryl Radford to skipper in place of Terry, and brought Tommie Perse in as Second on Geoff Gould’s rink.
In a very tight match, where there was only one shot in the aggregate with four ends remaining, Geoff Gould’s rink prevailed to ensure that the aggregate was won by 9 shots.

It was indeed a roller-coaster ride for Geoff’s rink of Tony Cocodis (Third), Tommie Perse (Second) and Owen Sweetman (Lead) in their game against Robbie Urquhart’s rink. They led 7-1 early, then slumped to 7-14, finally rallying to win 19-15. It was the rink’s fourth consecutive win.

It was great to see Rex Sweet’s rink of Rob Foy (Third), Marc Abonnel (Second) and Steve Vinci (Lead) win their first game for the season. Rex had drawn some difficult opposition in his first three games, and all four players bowled well to win by 4 shots against John Armstrong. It was nice to see Marc have his first rink win since joining us from Bullcreek.

Due to the enforced changes to the team, Daryl’s rink of John Smith (Third), Graeme Wake (Second) and Ivan Botica (Lead) bore little resemblance to Terry Ball’s rink of the previous week. However the boys bowled splendidly to hold Peter Aungier’s rink to a narrow 8 shot loss.

Ian Hastings’ rink played its part in consolidating the aggregate with a 9 shot win over Bruce Walter’s rink. David Phillips (Lead) and Shaun McCormack were dominant up front, Dave Wood (Third) played a very good game, and Ian put in the big bowls when they mattered.

Next Week:
The Selectors have made three changes to the team for next week’s away fixture against Mosman Park. Les Phillips and Kerry Eames return after a week’s absence to Daryl Radford’s rink, while Ivan Botica and Graeme Wake move across to Geoff Gould’s rink. Terry Ball is still nursing a knee injury.

Martin’s Prediction: KARDINYA.

SAFETY BAY V’s GOSNELLS

I haven’t heard from anyone at Safety Bay so can’t report their lineup or any news. Last week against Dalkeith-Nedlands Ray Beard’s rink won by 7 shots, Matt Massari’s rink won by 1 shot, Paul Beaumont’s rink only lost by 2 shots, while Graham Scott’s rink lost by 16 shots.

GOSNELLS
Brett Holland (Sk) Jason Bryan Andrew Hay-Hendry David Downey
Neville Mulcahy (Sk) Bert Cruickshank Brian Creswell Mike Rickard
Maurice Crabb (Sk) Alan Corby Roy Sharp Peter Gale
Kevin Bairstow (Sk) Trevor Gibbs Peter Hodgson Trevor Simons

Last Week:
Although suffering a loss to a good side in Yokine, there were nevertheless some positives to be taken by the Gossy top 16. A win on one rink by 9 shots, a couple of losses by only 3 and 4 shots respectively shows that the boys were very competitive in trying to grab the all important aggregate points. Unfortunately a bit of a blowout on the other rink that played the very strong Rod ‘Rocket’ Heaton rink proved the difference. However, all in all there is good reason for the team to stay positive and to continue to encourage and back each other.

Kevin (the bear) Bairstow’s rink:-
had a calculated game plan to get away well and then to maintain their advantage with steady bowls to try and get home with as many shots as possible. The boys got away well to lead by 8 shots to 0 and to their credit they stuck to their guns and got home with an important rink win.

Brett Holland’s rink:-
a very exciting development when the two undefeated rinks of Brett Holland and Scott Edmunds were to go head to head. It was Scott’s Doggies who got away to a flyer to lead 12 shots to 3 before Brett’s troops came storming back to hit the front 14 points to 12. A punch and counter punch encounter eventually saw Scott’s boys get home by 3 shots in a very entertaining game that was played in very good spirit.

Neville Mulcahy’s rink:-
had a good battle with Tony Kay’s rink all day. One side would get slightly away before the other would catch up and vica versa but the Yokine rink proved a little more consistent and were in front when it counted to win by 4 shots. Neville Mulcahy played well closely followed by Bert Cruickshank.

Alan Corby’s rink:-
stayed in touch with Rocket Heaton’s Doggies early to be 4 a piece but before the Gossy rink knew it the Doggies had slipped into another gear and led 19 points to 4. From there Gossy re-grouped to just about hold their own but at the end of the day went down by 16 shots.

(On the side:-
I had reason to telephone Bowls World last week and found myself having a chat with Yokine’s Rod Heaton. We spoke about the fact that Gosnells were playing Yokine at our railway tracks on the weekend and he asked me if I would also be at our club.
When I explained that I wouldn’t as I would be playing away in our 2nd side he chuckled and said, “ah so I’ll only see the good bowler in the family” referring to playing against my son, David. What Rod didn’t count on when he arrived at Gosnells on Saturday afternoon was being confronted by my 13 years old daughter, Kelsie, to inform him that she was actually the good bowler in the family thank you very much. After a good laugh they agreed to compromise that there are two good bowlers in the Downey family as long as it’s made very clear that I’m not one of them).

As I stated in an earlier report, our elected selectors rightly aren’t afraid to try new players and/or new combinations. Our 1st Division selector, Alan Corby, although playing pretty well has decided to rest himself from skip and to try something different.

He has reverted to a successful combination from last year’s One Red midweek competition when he played 3rd to Maurice Crabb. So a skipper’s role has been thrust upon Maurice who was really comfortable and enjoying playing in Brett Holland’s rink in company with two of his former juniors. The fact is that Maurice is a very good Club man and he will play to the best of his ability wherever selected to do so by Alan Corby.

NEXT WEEK:
So with the above in mind there are a few changes to two of our rinks. Maurice Crabb will move to skip with Alan Corby as his 3rd, Roy Sharp down to 2nd and Peter Gale leading.
Another very good Club man, Andrew Hay-Hendry, will take Maurice’s place as 2nd in Brett Holland’s rink and will be the perfect replacement as far as being a positive influence on our two youngest 1st division players. Like Maurice, Andrew will not only be a good role model in a bowling sense but also in how one should conduct one’s self on the green.
The still recovering slowly, Gordon Bradford, is out of the side at the minute. Gosnells had a very good win against Safety Bay at the Bay last season and can do it again.

Martin’s Prediction: GOSNELLS.

THORNLIE V’s DALKEITH-NEDLANDS

THORNLIE
Paul Pohe (Sk) Mick Hansen Jim Stein Andy Lill
Jim McKenzie (Sk) Alan Petchell Rod Kimble Jake Halse
Glyn Vaughan (Sk) Ross McMillian Bruce Deters Ray Halse
Greg Reagan (Sk) Terry McCormack Ian Rewell Tony Churcher

A report from a contact at Thornlie is as follows:

A week is a long time in bowls. Last weeks wake up call by Morley sparked some terrific individual responses from the Ravens top 16.

Paul Pohe’s rink:
Led by Paul and Mike Hansen, this rink scored a resounding 18 shot win over the rink of Lindsay Strange. That performance set up what was to become a very solid 37 shot victory over the home side, Leeming.

Glyn Vaughan’s rink:
Glyn and his charges battled hard all day to drop their rink by a single shot. Don Munro’s rink won 20/19 but that was the only bright light for Lemming for the day.
Greg Reagan’s rink:
Greg, Terry McCormack, Ian Rewell and Ray Halse got back into the form they are all capable of and finished on strongly to win by 7 shots.

Jim McKenzie’s rink:
Jim, Alan Petchell, Doc Kimble and Jake Halse were strong winners over Dannie Comrie's charges with McKenzie's rink collecting an 8 around the middle of the game setting up a healthy 13 shot winning margin.

With Corporate Bowls well and truly underway at our club at the moment it is worthy of note that lead, Andy Lill, is a recruit from corporate bowls and it is great to see Andy find his way into our top side within a year or so of taking up the sport.

NEXT WEEK:
With the 16 playing somewhere nearer to top form and results supporting the on-green improvement, the selectors will probably not tamper too much with the team. The Ravens host Dalkeith-Nedlands who are on top and unbeaten after four games. If Thornlie are to be taken as a serious top four contender then a win next week is a must. There is an air of confidence at Thornlie that should see them produce a favourable result, obtaining a valuable scalp to hang from their belts.

DALKEITH
Marco Krajancic(Sk) John Morgan Norm Sutton Ross McKenzie
Tony Skoric (Sk) Ross Donald Steve Back Vaughan Colley
Peter Bacich (Sk) Mark Lindsay Alex Gryta Peter Gason
Tom Williams (Sk) John McIntosh Gordon Wilson John McCormack

A report from a contact at Dalkeith-Nedlands is as follows:

The Silvertails make one change, in fact their first change for the season, for this weeks clash with the Thornlie Ravens. Vinnie “the Stallion” Santostefano makes his debut with the club and will play two for the Tom Williams rink. The Stallion was foaled and raised on the carpet of South Perth and played with great success against the Ravens last year on the carpet, both home and away. Gordon Wilson returns to skipper with the seconds and will be important, at least in the short term, in trying to gain promotion of the seconds to further strengthen the Club.

Safety Bay traveled to the home of the undefeated DN and gave the Silvertails a bit of a fright, indicating to other teams in the competition that their sloppy start to the season should not mean they are to be taken lightly.

Marco “the Krackerjack” suffered a rare loss at the hands of Mat Massari. The one shot loss (20/21) perhaps flattered the Krackerjack’s team who were outplayed for the majority of the game, as indicated by the fact that the Krackerjack was 9 shots down with two ends to go. But with the match in jeopardy and only one point separating the teams on the aggregate, the Krackerjack came to life to pick up 8 shots over the last two ends.

On the second last end and holding one the Krackerjack trailed the jack to go one down but improve his position. Then, with his last bowl took out the opposition shot bowl for four and was unlucky not to stay for five. On the last end, holding three and with the last bowl the Krackerjack had an opportunity to make five, but with some risk attached to the shot he opted to draw a fourth and secure the aggregate rather than try to protect his unbeaten record. Mat Massari played extremely well, his driving was a highlight, and his team gave him great support.

Ross McKenzie continues to impress at the front end, Norm Sutton was outstanding at two and was constantly able to make contact with opposition resting touchers to give his team a chance, none more so than the last end when he was able to spring the jack sideways to allow his team a multiple count. John Morgan started well and finished well but went missing for a large part of the match and it was during this period the Safety Bay lads were able to establish a match winning lead, a fact not lost on the Krackerjack, during or after the game. (see below) The Krackerjack did all he could and played some big bowls to keep his team in the match and keep hope alive all the way to the last bowl.

Following his shock loss “the Krackerjack” looks across the table at his third as he makes a call to the Sunday Times to place an ad in the classified section.
----------------------------------Marko Krajancic
----------------On Sunday the following ad appeared in the paper.

“SITUATIONS VACANT

Due to a terrible accident late on Saturday evening the Dalkieth Nedlands Bowling Club seeks a replacement for a badly injured third.
The successful candidate should be not only be a brilliant draw bowler, have a terrific yard on shot, a first class up shot, and be a magnificent driver, but also be able to read a head and shut up about the fact, soak up criticism and not be in need of compliments.
Previous military and combat experience essential. All interested applicants should contact Marco at the DNBC on 9386 1916

PS: I have just checked my diary and that accident is tomorrow night!”

Tom “the Bomb” Williams went down by seven shots to Ray Beard (15/22) but did well to recover from an early 12 shot deficit when it looked like the aggregate may well swing on the result of his match. “Gentleman” John McCormack followed his fine performance last week with another outstanding game as lead but the rest of the boys, “Snakehips” Gordon Wilson, “Big Macca” and “the Bomb”, never really got going. Lynch from Safety Bay was quite brilliant and did plenty of damage with draw bowling that was like an old Chinese war torture.

Peter “the Duke” Bacich
remains the only undefeated Silvertails skipper after another fine performance, this time a 20/18 win against Safety Bays Paul Beaumont. Peter Gason led extremely well and Alex Gryta was again in great form. Mark Lindsay had a rare off day but his calling of the head, support and enthusiasm throughout the entire match was instrumental in the win and confirmed what a great pickup he has been for the Silvertails. But the star of the rink was the Duke who skippered brilliantly, hit everything he drove at and drew well. It was testimony to how well the Safety Bay boys played that they stayed in touch all day. Fittingly it was the Duke who, when down on the last end, put the jack in the ditch with his second last bowl and then drew to the ditch to seal the win.

The star of the day however was
Tony ‘the wild Gypsy” Skoric whose 29/13 win over Graeme Scott carried the aggregate for the Silvertails.
The Gypsy entered the match in a dirty mood, and lighter in the pocket, after his second, Steve “the Bee Keeper” Back had fixed up the Gypsy in practice on Friday afternoon. All was forgiven by 5.00pm however after “the Bee Keeper” had continued his brilliant form to be, according to the Gypsy, the stand out on the rink

After a few very ordinary weeks, and a very ordinary start to the match, Vaughan Colley began to produce the form he displayed in the pre-season matches. This followed a little Croatian encouragement from the Gypsy, along the lines of “better enjoy your last game”, which seemed to work a treat. “Rowdy” Ross Donald was fantastic at three and continues to get better with each match.

With the much publicized arrival of Vincent “the Stallion” Santostefano at the Club, the pressure will be on the top 16, a pretty good problem for the selectors to have. Vin was at the game on Saturday to give support to his new Club. Dalkeith warmly welcomes Vinnie to the Club and are confident he will be a great acquisition.

Martin’s Prediction: DALKEITH-NEDLANDS.

YOKINE V’s BASSENDEAN

BASSENDEAN
Gordon Gray (Sk) Phil Hutchinson Ian Robertson Ray Denton John Lynch (Sk) Jamie Davies Nolan Hall Norm Kirkup Marcel Heruer (Sk) Colin Hotker Neil Strachan Fred Early Justin Opie (Sk) Craig Greenhalgh Wes Jones Steve Black
A report from a contact at Bassendean is as follows:

S Black, W Jones, C Greenhalg and J Opie
Had a fantastic game against the Cole led rink from Mosman Park. They tried their best however at each turn the Mosman Park boys had their measure, if Basso had 2 bowls 30cm from Kitty then Mosman Park would have 4 bowls inside that.
Justin Opie played a good game but with the Mosman Park front end playing steady bowls and Novak playing a great game as third the Basso boys were outplayed. Knowing the pride this rink has in its performances and the quality of the men, they are sure to bounce back hard next week. Mosman Park by 10 shots.

F Early, N Strachan, C Hotker and M Hereur
Had a real battle early against the Hicks rink, with Mosman’s number 3 Ellis wreaking havoc Marcel's men were down 9 to 1, however they won the mat and knuckled down to some steady consistent bowling. Fighting hard they regained the lead and in a very even performance they fought out the game coming home with the result.
Mosman Park were far from disgraced and played a great game. When asked how the boys played Marcel's comment was "They all played very steady and consistent bowls, a fantastic effort from them all!" Bassendean by 5 shots.

N Kirkup, N Hall, J Davies and J Lynch
This was a very good game with Bassendean getting out to an early lead with some good bowls all round. As the game progressed it was clear that the difference between the teams was the performances of Norm Kirkup at lead and Nolan Hall second who between them were all over kitty for most of the game.
Lester Mortimer did what he could but rarely took the mat with shots in hand. John Lynch played his usual steady game converting when needed and adding often. When asked about the game Lynchy indicated that the game was set up by the front end and that put all the pressure on the Mosman Park skipper. Bassendean by 10 shots.

R Denton, I Robertson, P Hutchinson and G Gray
This was a fantastic return to first division for Ray Denton who lead superbly for the Basso boys, Ian Robertson who was moved to this rink to add experience also played a ripper. "With bowls in the head, you can do anything and today we had that, the two boys in the front end set up our win!" said Gordon Gray the very happy Bassendean skipper.
Ray and Ian set up the win with consistent bowls, Phil Hutchinson and Gordon Gray played their part at the back end with some good bowls.
The Mosman Park team fought hard and had opportunities however the Bassendean rink was just too consistent for them on the day. Bassendean by 12 shots.

YOKINE
Rod Heaton (Sk) Ian Cooper John Bills Bill Morrison
Tony Kay (Sk) Alan Davis Terry Fulcher Chris Busing
Scott Edmonds (Sk) Rob Bowron Juris Lorencs Ian Goghill
Adrian Durrant (Sk) Darren Kellond John McGrath Graham Dawson

A report from a contact at Yokine is as follows:

No Gain for the Dogs

The dogs are happy to have N.S.W. recruit Jamie O’Keefe to make his long awaited debut but at the same time comes the news that we also lose a star recruit. After 4 weeks of cooling his heels on the side line following a Bowls W.A. ruling the time has come for Jamie O’Keefe to step up to the plate. He has had big game experience in the N.S.W. Premier League competition but will have to earn his stripes and start again in the West. The quicker greens and the windy conditions will have O’Keefe drawing on all the experience he has.
On the other hand comes the shock news that another star recruit Rob Bowron has opted for a clearance within the 5 game rule and will return to play out the season in Eaton. Bowron leaves the Doggies from the rink with the best record with 3 wins and a draw from the 4 games and will be sadly missed. The club thanks Rob for his efforts during his short stay and wishes him the best for the future.

The dogs had a tough game away at Gosnells with the heat a big factor out East of Perth. Gosnells started well but were reeled in by the dogs shortly thereafter.

Scott Edmonds skipped away for us as did Kevin Bairstow for the home team. Kevin Bairstow's team looked to be a match winner by the half way mark but the other 3 rinks for the dogs kept it tight.

Tony Kay's rink began to have the answers in the later stages of his game. His rink, which contained Alan Davis making his debut in 1st Division, was the difference.

Heaton's rink of Billy Morrison and John Bills up front and Ian Cooper with some solid conversions pulled away in the later stages of the game. Gosnells will upset some of the top teams at home this season and the dogs are happy to come away with the points.

This Week: Ins – Jamie O'Keefe, Wayne Coffey, John Gallop. Outs – Rob Bowron, Alan Davis and Graham Smokey Dawson.

Bassendean will be a big test for the dogs after a long week at the kennel. Bassendean will come out with all guns blazing after a very comfortable win over the inconsistent Mosman Park. This is another week were the dogs will see where they’re at by the time the game is run and won.

Martin’s Prediction: YOKINE.
