WANNEROO

Wanneroo “The Roos”

Bold is this club, you only have to look at their shirts and ask yourself this question – “would you wear it ?” - Well wear it they do and they do it proud.

The Roos finished last season on top and gained the automatic promotion to White, well done boys – with 14 wins from 17 games you were comfortably in front of the team in second place and thoroughly deserved the step into White.

With players recruited over recent years from Innaloo, Scarborough, North Beach, Corrigin, Geraldton and elsewhere, their playing strength continues to swell. Not a lot of stars, just solid contributors, together they go to make up a solid consistently tough to beat sixteen.

Having a couple of substantial mentors at Wanneroo, who are happy to help with training methods and technique is an obvious help to any club. This playing group seems to have melded together very well and they posted the result last season.

We talk about the “quality” gap between Red and White – is there a gap between White and Blue?

If yes – how wide is this gap and how well will The Roos travel in the new company this coming season?

Flo was telling me the gaps not so great – but Flo knows stuff all about bowls – so I asked a couple of my mates down at the local and they came back to me saying “the gap is huge and one can’t compare the two divisions, shit its like chalk and cheese Charlie said, then Fred asked “what are we talk’n bout” lawn bowls Fred. Well – that stumped ‘em all – let’s have another beer was the general consensus.

Back to the Roos.

They will give a lot of cheek next season and clubs that roll Wanneroo will know they have been in a scrap. Solid top six contenders is my assessment and maybe even a top four candidate.

It is a big call I know – Wanneroo should not be underestimated – Stirling are being touted as top four material, but they finished two games adrift of The Roos last season – the Roos will be there this year.

Have not heard of any successful recruiting for the coming year so one can only assume that their skips may stay the same as last year being, Derek Bowen, Kim Broad, Doug Watson and of course the ever “hanging out for a beer” Ecko Widermanski.

Andy wishes the Roos “good luck” for the coming season and my eyes will be firmly on your ladder position as the season unfolds.

Top six finish – probably the bottom half of the top six is my considered opinion for Wanneroo.

Go the Roos
