ROUND SIX

REVIEW ROUND SIX

Well – what can you say Melville went on a freeze cycle – Stirling went out on an off week – Morley almost did it – Bedford won again and the Roos almost got home.

In all a very interesting round of results, the best being “The Bulls” in the four – who would have thought that. Hilton brings up their first win and The Saints at home polishing their halos.

Who said bowls was a predictable game.

LEEMING 59 (1) V BEDFORD 93 (7)

The Bulls enjoyed the trip down and back – made it through boarder control South both ways without a hitch and the southern custom officials never noticed the seven points they stole and returned north with (obviously Cliffy had ‘em in his boot – dum bastards never looked there).

The big winners were the “Hunter” clan and Graystoke or is it Graybrook, either way they were the big molesters at Leeming on Saturday. Graybrook’s rink were 32/9 winners over the Morris led rink whilst Paul Hunter and his clan ran away with a 25/7 win over Gary Ford and his lads.

Bedford’s Dave Crook rounded out the 3 rink win with a 19/17 win over Stan Bartlett and his boys. Leeming’s solitary point coming courtesy of Colin Webber, with a 26/17 win over Bourke.

Well done Bedford – you’ve toppled the pre-season forecasters and now have a good grip on fourth place for your troubles.

What of Leeming who now have both hands firmly wrapped around 10th spot. All we can do is wish you well for the coming games and hope you are capable of a few wins on the run home. Keep fighting Leeming – it always looks darkest just before the sun rises.

Next week Bedford host Mosman Park and Leeming travel down the road to Melville.

HILTON PARK 84 (7) V MELVILLE 64 (1)

On paper Melville should have won this match – however it was pointed out that Hilton was a mad chance at home. The Magic continue their hot and cold performance and came away with only one solitary point.

Congratulations Hilton – your maiden victory must have been sweet and no doubt a little celebrating would have taken place at the bar last night.

Hilton has lost a few very close encounters and drew a few weeks back with the ladder leaders and now a win over The Magic. Hilton are still some eight points away from removing the relegation threat – still keep on winning and that margin will shrink rapidly.

The Bajic led rink got them selves into the winning circle with a strong 23/11 showing over Mal Randall. Dan Slade’s lads put up an impressive performance over Mike Cooper 25/16, with the 7th point being produced by Clarke’s boys who triumphed 18/16 over Hughes. Melville’s only magic came from Neville Brierley 21/18 winners over Travis Simpson. Where was Norm Ball – we hope he had a doctor’s certificate to cover his absence. Well done Hilton.

Next week Hilton travel to Stirling and Melville play host to Leeming

OSBORNE PARK 95 (7) V STIRLING 65 (1)

The Saints produced the goods well and truly and finished all over the top of Stirling.

Stirling would be a little disappointed with their indifferent performance and it may show this club as being a little disadvantaged once removed from their beloved “rug”.

Ever green Rance D accounted for Tony Krajancic 25/22 – The good looking Guelfi (Keith that is) got hold of Mark Pasalich 25/14 whilst Cliff G (the matriarch) showed a clean pair of heals to Alan Erceg winning 25/9. Neville Stevens was Stirling’s only bright spot for the day just getting on top of “Young Duggie Eaton 21/20.

Ossie Park just one shot away from the full count must send some concerns to the selectors at Stirling. Still there is no taking it away from The Saints it was a real good day on the park for them.

Next week Ossie Park travel to Wanneroo and Stirling host Hilton – two very interesting matches.

THORNLIE 77 (6) V WANNEROO 73 (2)

The match was played on a 15 second green that got tough when the breeze came in – for both sides. Wanneroo caused a few heartaches for the Ravens and there were 16 very happy blokes from Thornlie when the last bowl was played and Thornlie had fallen over the line. Fallen, limped, whatever – a win had been recorded with six valuable points and second spot on the ladder albeit by percentage.

Apart from some very good bowls by both clubs – this match was played with Great Spirit and sportsmanship and win, lose or draw it was a very pleasurable match to be a part of.

Paul Pohe set the tone for the Ravens with a solid win 22/14 over Derek Bowen, being the first to finish that gave the home side a little breathing space. Bubbles Vaughan was in and out of trouble all day and Echo Widermanski and his lads mad sure the day did not have a happy ending, Bubbles going down 24/20. That left McKenzie and Doug Watson doing battle, the big fella was getting them in ones and two’s and giving them away in two’s and three’s – and we know how that works out – when the dust settled Watson and his rink had run out 20/13 winners.

Then there was the floor show Tricky Ricky G and Shagger Barry P. This rink had two ends to complete and held the fate for both clubs. Going into the last end The Ravens had a handy 5 shot buffer and Barry could only manage a single shot for Wanneroo – leaving Thornlie winners by four. Too close for comfort.

Next week Thornlie travel to Morley (for the fight of the century) and Wanneroo host Ossie Park (also a great clash)

MOSMAN PARK 72 (6) V MORLEY 67 (2)

The game of the day proved to be just that a “very close encounter” with the honours going to Mossies by five shots.

Despite Wayne Neilson’s 26/10 (16 shot win) and continued great form from young Johnny Armstrong the other two Mossies rinks Rainoldi and Ball held sway and bought home the bacon for the host club.

Coming off a big win last week, Lester Mortimer and his lads were unable to tame Wayne Neilson, who with the aid of a well drilled rink kept the pressure on all day running out comfortable 16 shot winners and nearly stealing the match for the visitors.

JA also in the winners circle accounted for Steve Withers by two 19/17. Eighteen shots up and two rinks left Morley must have believed they had some chance. However that was not to be with Brad Ball getting well on top of the Big Pom and Rags doing what Rags does best – winning and making life tough for John Sheridan (ex team mates these two)

Ball’s rink with a 22/10 win and Rainaldi 23/12 made certain the aggregate stopped at home – with the final margin just five shots.

Mossies deserve the top spot and are yet to lose a match albeit Hilton did push them to a draw.

Next week Mosman Park travel to Bedford (vely interesting) and Morley host Thornlie (also vely interesting)

SUMMARY

One third the way through the season and a few clear messages are starting to filter through.

Leeming are in real trouble – Bedford are running the BULL – The stock market crash may have effected Stirling – Wanneroo are looking for Rolf Harris to change to words to “Tie me Kangaroo Down White” – Morley are mauling their competition – Hilton may sober up in time for next weeks match – Melville are looking for the DeFrost knob – Ossie Park are seriously looking for one more Saint – The Ravens need a good physiotherapist for one of their skips – Mossies look like they will keep on keeping on.

Twelve games to go and still any one can finish in the top or bottom four – what a great game bowls is.

Tarah and good bowling to all.

NORM BALL

Norm Ball

HILTON PARK BC

Norm Ball is an ornament to the great game of lawn bowls. A finer gentleman you would never meet.

Norm was a member of the winning 2007 team that won the Bedford Bowl

Norm recently had the distinction of playing his son Bradley in a Saturdat game of One White pennants and won the game.

Can't ever remember that occurring at such a high level of bowls.

The game is a better because of people like Norm Ball.
