PREVIEW - ROUND FIVE
MOSMAN PARK 90 (7) V THORNLIE 66 (1)
It seems every time I specify a “Game of the Day” one of the two teams melt into obscurity, this week Thornlie failed to fire a shot of any reasonable proportion and limped back to Ravenhill Road with a solitary point.
Mosman took all before them on Saturday with their skippers across the board putting on a bit of a clinic. They were ably assisted by their team mates and the reward for a good showing at home was first place and a three shot lead on the ladder.
The “Muckinbudin Kid” (Lester Mortimer) for those who don’t know got hold of the “Big Fella’s” rink and gave them a horrible shake walking to the bar 14 shot winners.
Lester had a great game and was supported well by Freund, Teague and Tiller (their new pommy recruit – who got better as the game went on).
McKenzie’s boys suffered their first loss for the season and from what I hear if they bowl like they did on Saturday – it won’t be their last.
Then came John Rainoldi – another master of the game – who could walk into any Red club and assume a skips roll tomorrow.
Rags seemed to be the major difference in the encounter with Ric Gilbert – taking a firm grip on what was a close game early and charging home with a handy aggregate winning lead of 11 shots.
We often talk about cream rising to the top – well rise it did at Mosmans and despite Thornlie hoping for some of it to turn sour – none of it did.
That left Bubbles Vaughan and his troupes doing battle with “The Ball” of the Brad variety. This was a nip and tuck affair all day – one side in front then the other – however luck for Glyn seemed to run out on their last end – wanting 2 shots to draw - the little master trailed the jack into the ditch however his bowl finished outside the rink and when he drew his last for a solitary shot the end had arrived, a one shot win to Mossies.
With seven points in the bag that left Withers and Pohe doing battle. Paul’s boys had had the advantage most of the day albeit by a slender margin and that was how this rink panned out Paul and his boys by 2 shots and the only highlight for the Thornlie reel.
Mossies will be hard to beat at home as their rinks do afford some kind of home ground advantage. Good luck Mosmans you deserve your “top of the table” ranking – next week Mossies are at home to Morley while Thornlie host Wanneroo.
MELVILLE 77 (2) V OSBORNE PARK 85 (6)
Andy selected a Melville win and immediately placed the “Kiss of Death” on The Magic. One assumed the grass was good and the speed somewhere around 15 seconds and playing a home ground advantage of some sort – why would you not pick Melville. It wasn’t to be and the Saints won 6/2
Ossie Park’s Young Duggie Eaton seemed to be the difference here and must have had a real liking for the Melville grass as he and his boys ran out 20 shots the better over Silvio Vassalo. With a 29/9 score line the 20 shot buffer was to prove sufficient to take home the aggregate.
Another “evergreen” Rance Dewson picked up The Saints other point finishing the day 3 shots better than Neville Brierley.
--------------Rance Dewson has a quite beer after the win on saturday
----------------
Rance Dewson is a stalwart of the Osborne Park Bowling Club where he has been a member for about 40 years.
A champion on and off the green for Osborne Park
Steve Hughes was Melville’s big winner taking on Keith Guelfi’s rink and coming home 14 shots the better on the day. Hughes has had mixed fortunes this season and Saturday’s win gives this rink a 2 from 4 outcome – keep the 50/50 up Steve as they all count.
Mal Randall was Melville’s other winner gaining the extra point by a solitary shot over Cliff Guelfi.
The Saints would be very happy with their days work as a win away from home is always a good outcome. These two clubs are separated by a single point on the ladder and sit in sixth and seventh spots.
Both would be looking for wins before Christmas to assist in distancing themselves from the dreaded relegation zone. Next week Ossie Park travel to Stirling and Melville visit Hilton Park, a couple of interesting fixtures indeed.
BEDFORD 87 (7) V HILTON PARK 78 (1)
My tipping was once again off the mark (shit what a great judge I am) congratulations to “The Bulls” 9 shots up and 7 valuable points and landing in fifth spot on the ladder seems grand reward for a good Saturday on the park.
Playing at home, Cliff Graybrook did what he does best and led his rink of Healy, Carson and Mort to a handy 5 shot victory over the Bajic led rink. Well done Cliff – I think that is 3 wins and a loss so far this year.
Paul Hunter and his boys made it 2 wins from four outings by coming home 11 shots the better over Norm Ball, not an easy thing to do as Norm seems to be having a real good year to date.
Dave Crook and Travis Simpson enjoyed a tight battle all day with the honours going to Bedford - bringing home The Bulls seventh point with a 2 shot win.
That left Dan Slade and Kevin Bourke doing battle – with young Mr. Slade running out a comfortable winner taking home Hiltons only point for the day – well done Dan.
Next week Bedford travel to Leeming and Hilton host Melville.
STIRLING 81 (6) V WANNEROO 75 (2)
Stirling, obviously happy to be back home following last weeks hammering showed how much they like their “rug” and produced a result more in keeping with the talent this club has on offer.
Tony Krajancic led the way for the home side taking on Doug Watson’s rink and coming home strong to record an 8 shot victory. This brings Tony’s win tally to 3 from 4.
Mark Pasalich and his boys got on top of Echo Widermanski by 6 shots maintaining a 3 from 4 tally for Marko. Both Mark and Tony will trouble a lot of rinks as this season unfolds.
Of the two remaining rinks Derek Bowen had the better of Alan Erceg with the score being 19/17 and Barry Parmenter Taking the honours 19/14 over Neville Stevens.
Only 6 shots in the aggregate and I’m certain Stirling would be happy with this result, Wanneroo does not have to improve much to get back into the winners circle.
Stirling has nestled into the top four whilst Wanneroo is in eighth spot.
Next week Wanneroo travel to Thornlie and Stirling host Ossie Park.
MORLEY 89 (7) V LEEMING 82 (1)
Morley at home to Leeming was always going to be a tough ask for the visitors. However the scores would indicate that a competitive match took place at Morley. Our Morley man reports as follows:
Played on a slick 14-15 second green with the usual wind experienced at Morley. At one stage Morley were around 30 shots in arrears. Leeming came to play. But a great fight back!!!!!!!
I guess it had to happen sometime...JA losing that is... but not many sides can come back after dropping 11 shots in the first three ends...fortunately they were able to contain the loss to 8 shots. Some great bowls were played by both sides, especially by skipper Ford. Pretty hard to stop a bloke from playing well. Final score 29-21 Leeming.
Wayne Neilsen's boys fought out a 23-22 win, and you can't get much closer than that. The good bowls were shared pretty evenly, everyone contributing at some stage, and that is all that is needed to secure a win.
Sherro's boys finally put it together for a long awaited win. Barry O'Byrne is playing great bowls leading, consistently drawing close, giving the second, Dave Griffiths, a start and being able to play position bowls. He did that extremely well; especially on the wide hand... he was probably the only one to manage the breeze on a consistent basis. This allowed Muzz and Sherro to play to a winning head, and thankfully they played well enough to have a handy 25-17 win.
The big Pom Aung and his boys were able to put together a handy 20-14 win, being last off with a handy 10 shot lead. But Aung didn't seem happy with his short (that word again) bowls, and seemed to struggle personally, but hey, he hung in there and his boys gave him all the help he needed.
Al in all a satisfying win, but the boys aren't getting carried away. There is a bloody long way to go, and it is a week by week proposition... Gees, Mossies next week. But don't write us off just yet.
At the moment we are pretty focused on what we need to do.
Next week Morley travel to Mossies and Leeming host Bedford – will Leeming maintain some sort of fight and give it too The Bulls?
Well that about sums up round 5 some winners some losers – and I guess that will happen next week as well – in the meantime luv ya mother and get’em close
Tarah and good bowling to all.
