REPORT ON ‘ONE WHITE’ 2008 /9
PREVIEW - ROUND EIGHTEEN
THE YEAR IS OVER FOR MOST
As the sun sinks slowly in the West – we say goodbye to the Leeming lions – they battled against great odds all year and for their efforts finished with the wooden spoon and just a solitary aggregate for 18 weeks of hard work.
It’s also goodbye to Hilton Park – another club who had chances to survive and failed – still the boys from Hilton should be far from unhappy with their years work – they produced some excellent results throughout the year and in hind sight lost a couple they should have won, Don’t think they will be in Blue for long.
Melville finally produced a bit of Magic that we all knew they were capable of in taking 7 points from Morley and sending The Mavericks into the cut throat semi final. The boys down on Canning Highway will be strong in Blue next year and should be back in White soon – perhaps bigger and better than ever.
Bedford gave plenty of cheek this season and probably would count them elves unlucky not to have survived another season – however that was not to be as The Ravens solid home performance has dispatched The Bulls to Blue for at least a year.
That finishes the relegations for 2008/09 and I for one will watch these four clubs performance in their new found league.
SAFE GROUND
Wanneroo used all of their “get out of jail free” cards in the last two matches. The Roos took 17 points from their last two outings to finish in sixth spot four points clear of relegation. Well done Wanneroo – another year in White in your prize for a grand finish to the year.
Thornlie also finished the year with a big win and fifth spot. The Ravens would be satisfied with the final result but I’m sure a little disappointed with their seasons work. This club promised a lot at the start of the year and failed to deliver to their full potential – for what ever reason. Something the boys on Ravenhill Road will look to improve on next season.
THE WINNERS
Congratulations Mossie Park – Red next year in just reward for a great season on the park.
Mosman Park set the benchmark very early in the year and all aspirants have spent the whole season trying to run them down.
With the home ground advantage in this years finals Mossies should be hard to beat for the flag and would certainly be starting short priced favourites with me if I was a bookie.
Stirling finished the year strongly – beating the ladder leaders on their own patch – not an easy assignment – and will front the same team next week in the second semi final. This should be a great game and we will watch with interest to see whether The Rug Kings can make it two from two.
Morley got better as the year went on and a top four spot for the Mavericks would be a satisfying result for a solid year’s performance. Morley started the year a little slow and built up solidly as the season unfolded. Next Saturday they step out against Ossie Park in the cut throat first semi final – should be a good match and predicting a winner will be difficult.
Osborne Park – this club has been committed and a strong performer all year. The club is well run and very stable and I’m certain that this stability has enabled rinks at Ossie Park to settle and work in together as a good team should.
Like Stirling, this club was promoted last year from Blue and for both clubs to finish in the playoffs says a lot for the manner in which both Stirling and Ossie Park go about their work.
We will be providing a summary of all finals matches so watch this space as the next few days pass.
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES
This year’s outstanding performance goes to Cliff Graybrook and his rink – despite loosing his last match – Cliff lost just one other for the year. Cliff is an under rated champ
Wayne Neilson and his boys along with John Armstrong and his rink had very solid seasons for Morley – The “Big Pom” Pete Aungier must also rate up with the best.
Steve Withers and Lester Mortimer’s rinks were well performed for Mosman Park as were most of their players for the whole season.
Best of the rest goes to Glyn Vaughan and his rink from Thornlie – a class act is the little fella.
THE FINALS
Looking for something to do next Saturday – we recommend you head to Mosman Park and watch this years First Division White talent on display.
First Semi Morley V Osborne Park
Second Semi Mosman Park V Stirling
Games are due to get underway at 9.30 am – get down there – the view is good – the beer is cold – and there will be plenty of good bowls to watch.
See you at Mossies and you can buy me a drink or two or three!
Tarah and good bowling to all – enjoy your break as there is only 28 weeks before it all starts again.
