Morley Mavericks
The best of what remained in white
WHAT ABOUT MORLEY?
Made the four last season, won some very impressive games and lost some equally impressively – especially at home – where wins would be expected. Their finals campaign went up in smoke when a number of their quality players were unavailable leaving Morley fielding a depleted 16 who were comfortably accounted for by Thornlie in the 1st semi final.
The news for 08/09 is not good as the losses are well in excess of the gains.
Gone – “The Spruce” Bruce Walter has taken up residence in Mandurah and believe it or not has already become President of Halls Head; it remains very unlikely that “The Spruce” will front for Morley this year.
Your good Bruce – down there for five minutes and you have taken over – suppose you will have them playing metro pennants soon? – you will be sorely missed by your old club – a great bowler and not a bad bloke to boot.
Gone (maybe) – Alan Barron appears to be AWOL and the goss is, “for family reasons”. Strange that, as most blokes I know love to bowl on Saturday for family reasons (getting away from them) joking of course!
Gone (maybe) – work commitments may keep Brad Moyle from the pennant track as commuting from Newman may not be possible with fuel heading for $8.95 a gallon.
Not Sure – Robbie Urquart did not make the playoffs last season and may also be a doubtful starter due to work commitments, still Morley will be doing what they can to get Robbie on the track as he is nothing short of brilliant when it comes to bowls. It has been said he is scared of no man and very few women – especially on the green… an absolutely fearless competitor.
GAINS – nil at this point in time.
Not the start any club would aspire to – all this and not a bowl played yet. Still Morley is a surviving club and with the talent left and a few new in house recruits – who knows where they will finish this coming season.
Young Sherro, J A and “the Aung” (that huge refugee from the UK) along with Wayne Neilson and a few others will be looked on to lead this club into next season, which I’m sure Morley will find tough. So it may be that other clubs playing Morley may have to be aware of the wounded tiger, as survivors, they usually fashion a way forward – somehow.
Sherro has taken on the selector’s role and we wish him well.
No doubt he will bring his usual flair, a sharp word or two, his keen wit and some good advice and guidance to a few new faces that this club will need to blood in order to put in a good season.
You’re up for it Sherro and we wish you well.
WHERE WILL THEY FINISH
Realistically, the bottom four is looking more achievable than the top four. Still there are always those two remaining spots at 5 and 6, where survivors will aim to land. Seven premiership points separated 5th from 8th spot last season – a fine line between staying and going.
Morley will retain White this year – it won’t be easy – they will find a way. So a finish somewhere in the top six is a likely outcome for this club.
Good luck Morley – you certainly appear to be due for some.
Tarrah
