ONE BLUE NORTH REVIEW
February 26, 2008 ROUND FOURTEEN REVIEW
WARWICK GET MUCH NEEDED POINTS
The major beneficiary from this weekends round of fixtures is the Warwick “Magpies”. Whilst I did not select them to beat Sorrento at Sorrento I believed that a loss might mean their demise this year.
However, with other results going well for them they are now very much back in the mix for a promotional playoff. The good news for them also extended to the fact that they won without the divisions leading rink skippered by Brian Friend winning.
Warwick 77 (6) (7th) def Sorrento (70) (2) (4th)
---------------------MAGPIES SWOOP ON LOW FLYING SWANS
The change of Jeff Sheppard to skipper worked wonders for the “Magpies” as he won the aggregate with the dismantling of “Swans” rink skippered by John Hammond to the tune of 25-13.
Alan “Angry” Anderson will be pleased with his rink after inflicting only the third defeat for the season on the star rink of Brian Friend albeit by the whopping margin of 20-19.
Stirling 99 (7) (2nd) def Bedford 58 (1) (9th)
------------------NOTHING TO SEE HERE
Top promotion fancy Stirling disposed of the second division bound Bedford with ease on Saturday.
If a cop was on duty he might have been heard to say “move along, nothing to see here” with the exception of Graeme Campbell defeating the highly rated rink of Tony Krajancic 19-17 after leading Tony 16/0. A change in length helped Tony's rink to get back into the game
Shane Nunan Bedford (pictured) has been a very steady player in One Blue this season and played well against Tony Krajancic
With a 41 shot margin all other scores were big wins to the boys from Jones Street.
Doubleview 88 (7) (3rd) def North Beach 69 (1) (8th)
-----------DOUBLEVIEW GIVE NORTH BEACH THE BLUES
As expected Doubleview cruised to a win over the North Beach “Blues” on Saturday. The win was set up by Winton Langdon with “Bomber” Gearing coming down from premier division in their 30-15 defeat of a rink that has been travelling very well skippered by Geoff Devenish.
Boomer Gearing Doubleview (pictured) top class player for Doubleview played well in his rinks win
All other rinks were very close and I am advised that Jason Wholohan played extremely well in his teams 21-17 win over John Coles
Morley 76 (2) (10th) def Scarborough 67 (2) (5th)
MORLEY TOO GOOD FOR INCONSISTENT GULLS
Full credit to Morley who travelled to Scarborough on Saturday with nothing to play for as they are certain to be relegated. They played without a care and proved too good for a tense Scarborough side at the end of the day.
My opposing skipper Wayne Mitchell deserves special mention as he won his rink with the last bowl of the day (a bowl I must say that any player in Australia would have been pleased to have played). This was on top of him hitting bare jacks into the ditch from a four or five down to two up results. Well played Wayne.
Michael Murray was extremely lucky to win and Steve Stokes's side nearly threw it away on the last end whilst Brian Axford’s side was simply not good enough.
The performance demands that our selectors overhaul the sides if we are going to avoid division two next season.
Wanneroo 88 (7) (1st) def Osborne Park 73 (1) (6th)
---------------------ROOS STOP SAINTS MARCH
The form team of the competition versus the top side. This was what occurred at Osborne Park on Saturday. On this occasion the top team Wanneroo demonstrated why they are so placed with an emphatic win over a very good “Saints” team.
The usual suspects in Widermanski, Bowen & Watson all won for the visitors whilst Ben Poggi kept his perfect 6-0 record as a skipper going. Osborne Park’s visit to Scarborough in the next game is vital to both clubs and will be played with some intensity.
My selections for this week
Round 15
Some great and season defining games next round.
North Beach will beat Morley
Scarborough will fall in against Osborne Park
Stirling will cement second place at the expense of Doubleview
Wanneroo will wrap up top place against Sorrento
Warwick will slip away from relegation against Bedford
