Two club mates meet in the Best of the West sets play final.
John Goddard the W.A State Singles Champion of 2008 and Kevin Pickering the Country Week Singles champion of 2008.
The last time these two giants of the game met was in the State Singles of 2009 in the early rounds. Would they be able to match that brilliant exhibition. That game was as close to perfect as you could ever wish to see.
This game didn't reach that standard but none the less it was a very good contest played in wind that was fishtailing and difficult to read at times. One was never certain who the winner would be.
The first set
was about applying pressure and recovering from a down situation, neither player could establish a break and when each had good numbers in the head the other would get the shot with their last bowl.
On the 6th end it was 4/4 and on the 8th end it was 5/5.
Kevin went on to win an enthralling first set 6/5. A very high standard game considering the wind and only 11 shots won in 9 ends gives an indication of how hard fought this set was.
The second end saw an unusual situation when Kevin Pickering put a bowl down on the wrong bias with his first bowl while John Goddard put his first jack-hi Kevin was skinny with his second to be 4ft narrow his third sat Johns Shot and his 4th was short
This is the end that Kevin had only one good bowl for the end but that was enough to win the end. We think Gut's is telling Kevin he (Gut's) has won this measure by that much :>)

L/R: Marker Wayne Neilson, John Goddard, The umpire, Barry Driscoll and Kevin Pickering
The second set saw John Goddard at his best and he really hit his straps applying
heaps of pressure and was clearly out bowling Kevin who wasn't playing badly at all, it was John who was always the closest to the jack and if he had to recover the shot he did so but he only had to do that once. Kevin was out bowled in this set.
So it was down to the tie break and each had won an end and this created a great last end
with both winning an end. The last end saw John get the closest but Kevin hung in there to probably get shot with his third bowl. John tried to push that shot thru and stay but missed narrowly. Kevin was not certain he had shot and played his last to push his bowl closer to the jack and that clinched the game, the title of the Best in the West and the big end of the prize money.
Congratulations to both players for playing such an interesting and great
game to watch
