The
Best in the West Singles were held at the Morley Bowling Club Friday 10/2/06.
Russell Hughes seems to like those Morley greens. After
winning the State Singles last year at Morley against
the odds and in brilliant fashion, he
has won the Best In The West Tournament for singles winners over the past twleve
months or so this evening .
Russell played a superb
game against Morley greenkeeper and last years marker Wayne Nielson, who filled
in for an absent
Keith
Doncon,
who won the Country Singles and what a great job Wayne did to reach the final
against Russell.
L/R:Wayne Neilson Russell Hughes
The final started out with plenty of close bowls from both players, however
the feature of the first set was that Russell Hughes had the ability to get
the shot back off Wayne when he was down, generally with Russell's last bowl.
The score was 6/1 Russell's way when Wayne bowled a brilliant end to score
a three and make it interesting to be down 6/4 then to be 6/5 on the 7th
end and a chance of winning the first set but Russell played yet another
last
bowl
save and went on to win the first set. 8/5
The second set saw Wayne get away to a promising start and lead 2/1 and he
was bowling well to get that score. The fourth end was the begining of the
end for Wayne, as Russell really hit his straps with precision bowls to which
Wayne had no answer and we saw Russ win the set 10/2.
Russell showed how good he was in this game with his ability whether he was
up or down he would do something to make things change to his favour
Wayne tried valiantly, but tonight was not going to be his night, None the
less Wayne has had a good game and a great day fillng for Keith Doncon.
