PLAYED AT YOKINE

April 17, 2011.

...........................L/R: Winner Thomas Mitchell, runner up Daniel Trewhella
..Tom Mitchell, Daniel Trewhella

Thomas Mitchell capped off a great year winning the Champion of Club Singles Champions at Yokine this afternoon when he defeated Daniel Trewhella.

As can be seen by the scores in the semi's both had to survive nerve wracking games to make it to the final

Thomas Mitchell had to survive a great performance from Daniel Patterson when he came from 13-17 down to win 21-18.

Daniel Trewhella on the other handhad an easier road to the finals with a dream draw which included a bye until he met Steve Withers.
DT was put to the test when he played Mosman's Steve Withers and managed to hold on and win 21-20 after leading 16-10.

I was asked who I thought might win this final remembering that both players played in the final of the Sorrento Masters which Thomas won. "Thomas Mitchell" was the reply, why would he win," because he has been able to find a way to win the tight games when behind and play the old fashioned draw shot game which he is very good at particularly when the chips are down"

The game started out well for TM when he led 6-0 after three ends had been played. DT was trying to find his range, that came on the 4th end when he scored his first shot for the game. The game was developing into a better than average game with tight heads the order of the day with not much separating either player.

The hilite of these early ends was on the 11th ends when TM 3 down with one bowl to play played a magic yard over to bring the jack to his waiting bowls.
DT with his last bowl provided a little DT magic coming thru the front bowls to sit TM out and pick up 2. A great piece of bowling by both players. That bought the score to 10 - 8 for TM

From here the game lifted even more in intensity with both players playing fantastic draw bowls to see the score tighten up with TM leading 13-12. It was TM doing better relying on the draw and just over the draw game while DT had been driving but not as often as we have seen him do so in other games.

TM was drawing superbly and was just too pinpoint for DT and edged ahead to lead 18-13, DT bounced back to snare a great 3 on the draw to keep his hopes alive but TM was playing a brand of bowls that was difficult to overcome and went on to win the final 25-18.
Thomas Mitchell has found the way ahead to become a very very good singles player, he backs himself to draw when the chips are down and this he did so many times today when the pressure was on. He also has the ability to draw a bit over, he didn't waste any bowls on drives, such was his draw power in this game.

Daniel Trewhella made a couple of blues in this game but still played a very good game in defeat and I am sure we will see more of these great contests between the two of them in the years to come.

But for now Thomas Mitchell has stamped himself as a singles player of class and must be considered to be very nearly the best in W.A....

Semi final oneDaniel Patterson

Daniel Patterson had to play Neil Payne in the first game this morning.

Yesterday we had seen Neil Payne at his best when he rolled three terrific players, Barry Parmenter who made him earn his win. Eddy Dodd is no slouch and he provided a huge contest for Payney then if that was not enough he had to play Gary Caffell in another nail biter. Probably Neil Payne was favourite on the strength of those performances.

Well it was all Daniel Patterson in this game, he won 21-8 in a scintillating performance to not give NP a look in. After the game I spoke with Neil and he was full of praise for the game Daniel had played, " Sherro he didn't play a bad end thru the entire game, he was all over the jack, he wouldn't let me into the game, it was a great performance from Daniel, he was just too good on the day and a well deserved win for him"

Daniel Patterson then played Thomas Mitchell in a terrific contest, it was Daniel who got out of the blocks to really put the pressure on TM to lead 10-4 and drawing so well that TM was on the back foot for a long period of the game.

It looked like an upset was in the making with DP leading 17-13 and only wanting 4 more shots. TM just put the foot to the floor and roared home to win 21-18. Well done to DP who would have been happy with his overall game and is ever improving as a player.

Semi final two
Steve Withers started the morning game playing Ross Princi and what a contest it proved to be. Ross Princi is a solid singles player who has some good scalps to his credit.
This contest was hard going for both players with little in it, both rose to the pressure when required, draw power was good from both players, the area of difference in this game was the shot play of Steve Withers who produced a couple of rippers when they were badly needed. After the game I spoke with Ross who said, '" Steve got me early with some telling drives, I sure had the bowls there but after SW has finished they were all gone."

SW won the game after the scores were level at 17-17 with draw power. Ross Prince is a player that would never be underestimated and he proved how hard it is to put him away today

Next game saw Steve Withers up against DT, as we said in our preview this would be DT's first real test. It was SW who got out of the blocks best to lead 6-0, yikes DT had never been behind in any game he had played up to this point of time.

Slowly but surely DT cranked up and was back in business and the drive was doing a lot of damage to SW. The score was 10-9 SW's way, from there on DT took charge to lead 16-10, it appeared the game was over with Daniel in it seemed complete control.

The game reignited when Steve Withers picking up a well earned three on the draw to give himself a sniff. From there on DT regained control however in the last three end Steve Withers rallied once again to lose by the barest margin. 21-20.

Steve Withers has shown himself to a player who never gives in and tho he did lose he would have loved the chance to roll DT and nearly did.
